‘They tried to bury us, but we were seeds’ Quote attributed to Greek poet, Dinos Christianopoulos and used by various activist movements. The 3 necklaces use materials that can be found easily among the rubble of human actions. The materials now have a value after time has been invested in them, using processes of stitching, shaping, colouring, and caring to rework the discarded detritus. The pieces hold hope for the present human condition. Mandy Flood, 2024

31. Hangaroa (Dentalium shell necklace) $4500
Dentalium shell, muka; full L1070mm, beaded L440 x 25mm
Dentalium, also known as tusk shell, was once a common jewellery material used by Māori. They were frequently strung with muka and made into anklets, wristbands, and necklaces of various shapes and design. There are more than 50 living species of dentalium across the globe and even more extinct species. The shells of these species are often found fossilised in rock formations, particularly in the Otago and Southland areas, and while old dentalium shell jewellery has been found all over the country, they are far more common in the South Island.
This piece is titled “Hangaroa”, after a dentalium shell necklace labelled in the Otago museum, the only evidence of a name attached to this type of adornment that I have found so far. Design wise it is based off one held in the Stockholm Ethnographic Museum in Sweden and was likely collected aboard the Endeavour. It is likely the first reproduction of its kind in nearly 200 years. – Isaac Te Awa, 2024
