Elicia Hunt (HC) 15. Line – Sketch Buttons
set of 3, Sterling silver; Dia23mm
$350
These Buttons are a part of an exploration of simple line sketches. Sadly I was not one of the productive makers during lockdowns, I find it increasingly hard to start a project...And then finsih it! Yet there is always something easy about picking up a pencil and making a scribble, so I made my scribbles into buttons.

May Trubuhovich 27. Salvin’s Albatross Series set of 6, Hand embroidery, acrylic ink on cotton, polyester wadding, metal button back; Dia38mm
$660
This series is based around the Salvin’s mollymawk, which is a smaller albatross with breeding colonies on our subantarctic Bounty Islands/Moutere Hauriri Marine Reserve and Snares Islands/Tini Heke. These buttons form a companion piece to my recent work for the NZ Maritime Museum about an 1890 subantarctic sea voyage, in which I focused on the vulnerable animal populations of the Islands.

Clovis Viscoe 30. Waggle Buttons
Kauri and acrylic; Dia52mm
$50 each
The waggle button design is inspired by the phenomenal precision of the waggle bee dance. Engraved in Kauri with a schematic design, a bee’s movement plots the suns angle and distance to the nectar source, encompassed within an acrylic flower design.
Clovis Viscoe 31. Button-shaped Flowers
Kauri and acrylic; Dia52mm
$50 each
Inspired by a quaint and no less intriguing custom, button-ties shaped flowers were kept in pockets or worn by maidens under their aprons, their growth an indication that they would find favour with their sweethearts.
Lisa West 32. Kaka head button
Silver, brass, copper; Dia40mm
$920
These buttons are ‘wishful buttons’. I wish for all these birds to inhabit Rakino permanently; Kaka visit regularly, a tomtit has been spotted passing through, and the saddleback would need a translocation program, something only achievable if cats are excluded, and funds can be raised.

Lisa West 35. Limpet buttons
set of 6, silver; 26 x 20mm
$350
The limpet buttons are also wishful. Our recent survey of rockpools around the island showed that limpets, chiton, cats-eyes, and anemones are in short supply, or non-existent. The eco-system of the Hauraki Gulf is critically endangered but can be remedied with a lot of care.
Walk in the Park 36. Zen Garden An implicit form of meditation.

Connection and Protection; distancing from and connecting to that which we love. A button connects one side to the other; my cherished memory of walking through the kauri forest is now prohibited by the threat of kauri dieback of these magnificent trees, yet my connection remains strong and informs my work. These buttons/pendants express a wairua (heartfelt) connection to preserving a national treasure.
