IRO-SHINO Oribe - artist statement Aaron’s work has always been about the mixing of ideas he finds to be interesting or beautiful within his own style. This includes his interest in hip-pop music, a genre that reflects his approach to ceramics. The way hip-hop can splice or sample from a variety of sources, historic and contemporary, deeply influences the way Aaron makes and thinks. Aaron has always been deeply involved with traditional Japanese ceramics, especially those from the Mino area in Japan. The forms, decorative traditions, and glazes of Oribe, Shino, Kizeto and Setoguro have been of significant influence. The development of his practice is an exploration towards the refining of his views on beauty within the framework of ceramics. Aaron’s work in ceramics has been a considerable part of his life. This exhibition is a culmination of his ideas around the revitalizing of several precious styles within Japanese ceramics. Living in Japan, the main glaze Aaron used was Oribe where he worked using a more traditional style but also worked towards a modern version of the Oribe Style. Returning to Aotearoa, he first worked in the porcelain styles of Kutani and Imari as similar materials were available. Aaron’s use of Kizeto and Hikidashi glazes and the development of a Yobitsugi style, followed. In the background was always a desire to use Oribe and to explore a modern version of the glaze. Oribe is challenging, fast fired in a gas kiln (Aaron fires in electric kilns now), using 6 types of wood and grass ashes. Having sporadically done testing on Oribe over the years, Aaron had no real success until last year. In his revisiting of Oribe, Aaron knew well of the movement in Japan, to modernize traditional glazes. While his test glazes of Oribe had been successful, the style did not always suit his ideas of ‘beauty’ nor with the way he works with ceramics. The traditional Shino glazes with a coloured slip underneath and the more pictorial Shino decoration, better suited his sensibilities. Last year Aaron undertook research for the group exhibition, A very Different world, curated by Ngahiraka Mason at Te Tuhi Contemporary Gallery in Tāmaki Makaurau, which led him to research the coronavirus. During this process he came across scientific symbols and jargon that took his interest. Symbols and the use of words as patterns, have been influential in Aaron’s practice, often in a cipher only understandable to the maker. The combination of Aaron’s own cipher with words and symbols taken from our daily lives in this technologically driven era, creates the highly energised surfaces you see here.
