In this series of brooches and pendants, Raewyn Walsh gives in to the human urge to intervene on nature. ‘…this group of shells tell the story of gathering, collecting and, in the end, interruption. When we collect we remove items from circulation. The purpose of these items then changes, becoming human-centric and in the service of our needs and wants. I collected these shells from daily walks on Muriwai Beach, and then I intervened even further. These geometric markings mask the organic systems of nature into an ordered freeze frame. A tessellated moment where there are no gaps or overlays. It never lasts, but it is what we do.’ -Raewyn Walsh, 2019 ‘The jewellery I make investigates the attachments we have to physical things. I am interested in the ideas that surround the collection, possession, ownership and function, and the subsequent associations these themes have with time and memory.’ Raewyn Walsh graduated from Unitec with a Bachelor of Design (Honours) in 2009. Raewyn was the 2011 prize winner of the Objective Art Awards. Raewyn has also participated in the mentoring project HANDSHAKE set up by Peter Deckers, in HANDSHAKE 2 in 2016 when Raewyn was mentored by Henriette Schuster, and in HANDSHAKE 3 in 2017. Raewyn has work held in the collections of The James Wallace Arts Trust and Tairawhiti Museum, Gisborne.
