Alice Alva 1. Mother Beddock, 4805, 2023

Stranded embroidery thread on linen in custom frame $1,250 280 x 265 x 30mm Inspired by the flora and fauna found on our walk-up Mother Beddock when we went on a family trip to Tropical North Queensland to see my parents in September.

Alice Alva 2. My body as a house, 2022

Wool on plastic canvas in custom frame $1,400 320 x 240 x 30mm This work was completed when I was pregnant with my daughter Daphne while we were living in a lakeside house dubbed the ‘Harris House’ designed by fellow Hamiltonian Roger Walker. The shape of the dusty pink frame reminded me of the house or whare tangata Daphne was growing in. The image resembles the Harris House, specifically the room where Daphne did most of her growing.

Alice Alva 3. Blossom, 2022

Stranded cotton, calico and suiting linen in archival mounted frame $2,650 330 x 400 x 50mm I created this work when I found out I was pregnant with Daphne, abstract shapes of flowers can be seen blooming, blossoming and multiplying.

The nostalgia of repeated bus journeys to and from home in West Auckland to ‘K Road’ provides inspiration for the ‘Pasese’ (translated as ‘fare’) series. The unique hole punch possessed by each bus driver an identity and mark, or proof of interaction with that individual as part of our commute. These unique hole punch shapes are depicted and elevated in ‘Pasese’ as motif representative of our Pacific communities’ connections back to the place we first arrived to in Tamaki Makaurau. Connecting back to a time and place that is familiar…but fading in memory.

May Trubuhovich 26C City Fringe Buttons, 2023 - Spring Things

May Trubuhovich 26. City Fringe Buttons, 2023 A - Suburban Eyrie B - Bin Day C - Spring Things $220 each 64mm fabric covered buttons; Hand embroidery and acrylic ink on cotton; Polyester and cotton thread, wool/polyester wadding, metal button back. Ongoing observations of suburban life on Auckland's western fringe. I like drawing things that are irritating, or that “spoil the view”, like power lines and rubbish bins. I find that once I’ve observed them closely I can discover all kinds of endearing things about them, and then they don’t annoy me anymore.
