May Trubuhovich 30. Carbon Based - after Bill Hammond Cotton hand embroidery and acrylic ink on collaged cotton toile "Playground"; acrylic medium. Initialled and dated in cotton; 365 x 300mmm
$2,500
This piece came about after the passing of Bill Hammond. His work is so full of loss, mourning, and fantastical hybrid beings; it seemed fitting to me to explore ideas of mortality and transcendence with one of my own. The background was created by collaging together many, many small pieces cut from a length of furnishing fabric, which originally featured 18th century-style European figures in a pastoral setting. These snippets were rearranged to form a landscape more reminiscent of Aotearoa New Zealand, replete with pōhutukawa, pukanui and volcanic apocalypse.

Layla Walter 37. Vessel for Sally with Kazakh Pear, 2021
cast Olive green Gaffer glass; H270 x D330mm
$11,000
Vessel for Sally with Kazakh Pear is significant in two ways. For technique and matters of the heart. This bowl proved my new process - a way of modelling and mold making without using wax, which enables me to go up greatly in scale. The resulting larger work will debut with Masterworks Gallery at the Aotearoa Art Fair, March 2022. More important than technique, is a mystic journey. In 2019 I was invited to Uzbekistan, and later to Kazakhstan. Before this trip I was asked to write a story (for Garland Maggazine). I focused on my love for my father Adam who taught me about fruit trees. By chance in Kazakhstan I landed on the genetic origin of apples and pears! This year my mother Sally and I cared for my father who took his last breath.

Harvested and made in the last months, this Hiapo is from a larger body of work that has been made at the McCahon residency using whenua pigments and kāpia ink from kauri gum. The materials made local have given a fresh breath into my Hiapo works made during the transition into Raumati and the humidity in the air and location of Titirangi can be felt in the surface of the cloth. Niue blue and the Starfish pattern are main features in this cloth celebrating the vibrant transition of nature here and in Niue during this seasonal shift. The warmer months mean cyclone season in Niue which is a scary and dangerous time, so I send through symbols of love (starfish) and blessing of a Niue blue butterfly as prayers of a safe Raumati to the island and to our community here.
