Saili o le filemu translates as seeking rest, or peace as filemu can be translated. The notion of ‘seeking rest’ is common to all and speaks of the individual’s life journey seeking that which provides purpose, meaning, peace and rest. Using Samoan motif to create intricate patterns that reference the artist’s mixed heritage, each piece represents the fabric of one’s life and the presence or influence of rest in that journey. The vae’ali (arrow-like) motif depict the legs of the traditional Samoan wooden headrest (‘ali) used to support the head while sleeping on the floor. The artist draws from her journey of faith and the concept of ‘faith rest’ that manifests itself in the final piece where rest is ever-present in all aspects of life.

Initially developed as a colour study applied to traditional Samoan motif, lalaga translates to weave, or woven. This series speaks to how our life’s journey creates a rich fabric that has been woven together from our knowledge and knowing of the past, from our experiences that are both positive and challenging, all of which is valuable and informs who we are uniquely as individuals. That our connection with others whilst often difficult, is the most rewarding when we can appreciate the beauty in our differences.
35 BTM Flood, 2022 $2,700 ceramics, glazes, silver, freshwater pearls D280 x H290 x W240mm sitting; H400 x W240 x D185mm on wall
Sung Hwan Bobby Park's ceramic bulletproof helmet series BTM started with his reflection on the impact of Korean military law 92-6 on members of the queer community. 92-6 strictly criminalizes homosexuality and yet gay men are not exempt from mandatory conscription as stated in the Korean constitution. The sense of constant fear and anxiety for these men in their time of duty for their country is represented in these helmets. The supposed indestructible helmets do not protect them from the brutally homophobic and violent policies and culture within the institution and they may as well be wearing these fragile ceramic helmets during their service. Park repeats his BTM series as his base to continue to talk about the relationship between government policies and how it impacts everyday people. BTM POP and BTM Eyes Have It are sculptures that break away from uniformity and celebrate the brilliance of individuality. BTM Flood is made during the Nelson flooding in 2022 and how the government's response to the crisis can be described as being temporary and responsive, putting up orange cones and metal barriers which is not adequately addressing the underlying issue of climate change.
36. Haratua (May 15 & 16), 2022 $1100
Print on silk; 100cm x 50cm Haratua (May 15 & 16) is an excerpt from the artists’ series of Maramataka works. Beginning and ending with the new moon, Emily and Arielle exchange a video and reflection on alternating days. Just as the lunar cycle begins in darkness, the exchanges begin without an illuminated pathway; without an expected outcome. As they pass the threads of conversation back and forth, patterns, rhythms and cycles begin to emerge. For this piece, their writing layers onto Emily’s film photograph from May 15, made while the artists were staying at Arielle’s family bach by the Tongapōrutu river.

These fiery works from the series “Foul Wind” are an expression of rage against the abuse of power. They foreground the strength of those who tell their difficult stories, and in doing so often pave the way for others. They came about after a former teacher of mine was revealed to have acted abominably; the loss of respect, anger and complex emotions felt a little like mourning.
