Tui Emma Gillies (Tongan, Pākeha) 9. Ocean Voyage, 2024 Painted Ngatu on synthetic sphere, Dia.290mm

$2,500

The process of ocean voyaging can be seen as a process of deep psychological exploration. In myths and legends from around the world the hero or heroine sets sail across the ocean, the loch or the river and encounters strange and terrifying creatures, in this case a giant octopus. The bodies of water signify the subconscious and the creatures are the complexities and traumas in the psyche that we must observe, heal and release. We are all on our own personal ocean voyage, from birth, through life, to death. On one shore are our ancestors. On the other, our descendants.

Tui Emma Gillies & Sulieti Fieme'a Burrows (Tongan) 10. Fekau’aki (Connection), 2024 Tongan feta'aki (tapa cloth), umea (red earth from $25,000 Falevai, Vava'u), tapioca starch (organic glue) and kupesi. H1830 x W1770mm Fekau’aki is a Tongan word that describes connections. They could be between family members but fekau’aki could also represent the way the ocean connects all the peoples and lands of the world. Fekau’aki is connecting or linking or meeting or being united by the biggest ocean. This painting depicts a family voyaging on the high seas in their vaka. They navigate and are guided by the heavens, as indicated by the stars in the four corners of the painting. Life is a journey through treacherous seas with our loved ones. The universe is a wild place. Even in the concrete safety of the city, we are still in the wild. An earthquake, a cyclone, or a disease can attack us and overcome our defences, no matter how prepared we think we are. We are adrift on the universe cruising in our tiny vaka. It can be too much to face alone. That is why we must stay connected. In numbers, there is strength and it is easier to be brave. We must connect also with the great voyages our ancestors took to arrive at the places we call our homelands and the voyages we are embarking on right now in our vaka sailing across the mighty universe.

Cora-Allan Lafaiki-Twiss (Maori, Niuean - Ngapuhi, Tainui/ Alofi, Liku) 15. Existing in multitudes, 2024 Tuitui ink on Hiapo; H1500 x W1235mm $12,000 As a person from the moana I like to reference to the connections from Niue to Aotearoa, the journey my grandparents took and the patterns in traditional and new Hiapo move between these places. The motifs from the past hold hands with the newly ones I created to share my memories and stories with Hiapo. Existing in multitudes offers an insight to my position of being one of many transcending between generations through an ancient art form. The composition is set up to have a surprise and detail at every angle of the work, introducing you to different metaphors and images that reflect my experience and time spent in museum archives.

Neke Moa (Ngāti Kahungungu ki Ahuriri, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Tūwharetoa) This series of works celebrate collaboration. 16. The vastness of the universe we belong to can be seen in the pounamu piece, held in the hand of the wearer, it will be the largest thing in the room. That all these things can exist at the same time, a physical manifestation of layers, dimensional space and scale. A shell lei with a bone hanger are the collaborators.

Parents whose babies are miscarried or still born. Parents of children aborted. People who have attempted adding to their whanau through adoption, surrogacy, IVF, donors. Mauminamina listens to all of your karakia, your pain, anger guilt, or fear. Maiminamina knows that you will have sadness, acceptance, and sometimes loneliness. Mauminamina wants these people to know that all of your thoughts and stories will be heard. Mauminamina is the Atua for parents of children who did not make it here. Here, Mauminamina is framed in māneene shells. A physical reminder that we are supported. The shells represent the greater whare she belongs to and creates a space for her to be the focal point,an individual part of a greater whole.

Haumie and Rongo are a power couple, working within the same kaupapa spaces. Sometimes difficult to tell them apart. The banana seeds refer to Rongo, the wooden hanger, Haumie, holding them up. 4 Likes 4 loves, 4 likes, 4 hahas and a partridge in a pear tree, tagged and boxed, a bit dada’d… The general concept that underpins Shelley Norton’s work is the notion of meaning - how we construct it, and how, in turn, this fascinating production, defines, supports and constrains us, in our daily existence. In this series Norton plays with the prepackaged responses to received information, using her material of choice, the not so common plastic shopping bag.
