Equations When something is described as an equation, it just means that whatever is on the left side of the “=” sign is equal to whatever is on the right side. Use the equal sign to show that two things are the same. The equal sign doesn’t show an action. It is not an operation. It may feel like an action because it’s what you use on your calculator to make the numbers change. For example, say that you have 2 dollars, and then someone walks up and gives me 5 dollars. Now you have 7 dollars. Then Billy walks up, and he has 7 dollars in his wallet, too.

You can describe receiving the 5 dollars with an operation: addition. You have the same amount of dollars as Billy, so you can say: 2 + 5 = 7 You’re not changing 2 + 5 into 7. You’re just saying that 2 + 5 is the same as 7. Mathematically, it’s correct if you told someone, “I have 2 plus 5 dollars in my wallet.” It would be the same if you said, “I have 7 dollars in my wallet.” While this is correct, in math problems, you should be as simple as possible. You should work out any operation that you can on your calculator so that you can have the simplest answer. Using 7 is much simpler than 2 + 5. The rest of this book uses the equal sign to show when an operation is the same as a simpler number. This also matches with what you can put into your calculator. When an equals sign is used to show that the information on either side of it is the same, the whole math problem is called an equation.
