Every student can graduate high school with a college-ready ACT or SAT score. Every student deserves to.

For most students, however, it’s not a level playing field. Students who come from low-income communities—who might be the first to go to college in their families—have an uphill climb. The tough reality is that nearly 90% of low-income students graduate high school without a college-ready ACT or SAT score.

It’s not a level playing field for the schools that serve underperforming students, either. Each year, expectations rise but without a commensurate increase in resources. The recent pandemic has only exacerbated this trend.

That’s why MasteryPrep’s entire focus is on helping schools succeed. We have developed the only college readiness curricula designed from the ground up to help schools boost their students’ scores. In addition to inperson instruction, we offer distance learning options that will help you provide engaging, effective instruction.

In 2022, MasteryPrep reached a milestone of impacting more than 1 million students since our company’s founding in 2012. Our college readiness resources assist more than 400,000 students each year across 625 school districts and institutions. We hope that this year we can partner with you and help provide your students the brighter future that higher test scores bring.

My instruction is more lively and relatable for our students and has resulted in positive gains in their achievement!“

“Training to be a MasteryPrep facilitator was strenuous, intense, and most importantly, necessary. I am not well versed in every single subject so I had my reservations walking in. However, it prepares you for the worst-case scenario, from student engagement to content comprehension. DeSoto Parish School District ACT Scores

Mastery for the ACT Success: DeSoto Parish School District

DeSoto Parish School District serves 5,119 students, 48% of whom belong to racial minorities and 43% of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch.

After implementing Mastery for the ACT, DeSoto Parish was recognized for making the largest single-year ACT score gains in the state (+1.1 points district-wide) both with its entire population and among its minority and economically disadvantaged students. Its gains in college readiness accountability scores helped propel the district from a D rating to an A rating.

DeSoto went on to earn an A rating for a second year in a row, moving from its ranking of 45th to the 9th highest-performing school district in Louisiana!

“This has been one of the best experiences working with an outside organization that I have ever had.”

“Our teachers love the MasteryPrep materials. They are so well done, and so well put together, that any teacher, from any subject, could use their materials and teach them to students. English teachers could teach on the ACT math test, and vice versa. MasteryPrep’s materials have made teaching students how to properly take and prepare for the ACT so much easier.”

“When we started, only 3 students were scoring an 18 or higher. We ended the program with 21 students scoring 18 or higher, 18 of whom scored 19 or above. We had students (including English learners) increase their score by 5-7 points. The highest gains were made by a student who started with a 14 and ended with a 21.”

Rankin County School District

Two years ago, Puckett High School invested in MasteryPrep Ready for the ACT, MasteryPrep’s comprehensive system of all its available ACT college readiness resources and solutions, including ACT prep and college admissions support for grades 9-12.

Puckett earned one of the highest ACT score gains within Mississippi’s Rankin County School District.

Their experience with MasteryPrep Ready for the ACT was so positive that access to the college readiness resource was expanded to all nine RCSD high schools.

“Having [MasteryPrep] Ready allows us to have an academic timeline that is set up for high school graduation and entrance into college, but we also have resources that prepare our young people for the skills necessary to enter the workforce,” said Montgomery Hinton, College and Career Prep Specialist for RCSD.

Freshmen take a practice test through MasteryPrep’s TruScore Testing & Analysis for the ACT, which now features 3 official ACT® practice tests. Freshmen are also introduced to Elements for the ACT (classroom bell ringers) and The College Playbook (our guide to the college application and admissions process).

The RCSD pays for all sophomores to take the real ACT in the spring, and sophomore year is when they also enroll in dual college credit.

RCSD students take the ACT in both the fall and spring of their junior years, while several students opt in to take the ACT/WorkKeys in the spring. In the fall, they begin dual enrollment and start to work with their counselors on college/career outlooks. In the spring, they begin to apply to colleges and/or job shadow in their career of choice.

MasteryPrep’s Mastery for the ACT curriculum is implemented into junior year curriculum, supported by SnapCourse for the ACT (video lessons) and Study Hall for the ACT (reinforcement by prepping students on the skills they need to master). Boot Camp for the ACT help provide that final push before real test day.

Twelfth grade is then set up for seniors to continue to improve upon ACT/WorkKeys performances, and they work with their counselors to make choices about their college and careers.

Mastery for the ACT

Mastery on the ACT

Mastery for the ACT works because it addresses the three areas that must be mastered to maximize score gains.

Time Mastery

Every lesson includes timed practice and pacing techniques, so students go into the test with the time management habits they need to succeed.

Test Mastery

Students who consider themselves “bad test-takers” gain a new perspective when they go through the Mastery for the ACT program. Test-taking is a skill that can be learned just like anything else. In every lesson of Mastery for the ACT, students learn essential techniques and tricks that help them master the ACT and standardized tests in general.

The program covers guessing strategies and the process of elimination as well as subject-specific strategies, like tricks for eliminating commas and how to make the most out of math figures.

Content Mastery

Time management and test-taking strategies can only take students so far. In the end, students must know the content to win at the ACT. Mastery for the ACT takes up where many test prep programs leave off by providing key reinforcement for the academic skills that make the biggest impact on ACT scores. Over 100 hours of scaffolded lessons build student skill to the rigor of the ACT, while more than 1,600 ACT practice questions ensure that students are prepared for the exact way the ACT will be testing them.

The Structure of a Mastery for the TSIA2 Lesson

Every section of a Mastery for the TSIA2 lesson is designed to stand on its own. You can use the lessons one after another for a one-semester course, or you can pick and choose resources from lessons and individual sections to suit your students’ needs.

Cover Page:

Includes a summary of what topic will be discussed in the chapter, along with a preview of what students will see in their workbook.

Warm-Up:

A practice question introduces your students to the topic of the chapter and helps you differentiate instruction and monitor growth.

CHAPTER 29 Punctuation In this chapter, students will determine whether and where commas are needed to set off or separate adjectives and parenthetical elements in sentences. TSIA2 STANDARD Essay Revision and Editing Standard English conventions The student will edit text as necessary to ensure conformity to the conventions of standard written English grammar, usage, and punctuation. Sentence Revision, Editing, and Completion Conventions of punctuation The student will edit and complete sentences as needed to ensure conformity to the conventions TEKS ALIGNMENT E1.9 Composition listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts— writing process. The student uses the writing process recursively to compose multiple texts that are legible and use appropriate conventions. The student is expected to: (D) edit drafts using standard English conventions, including: (v) punctuation, including commas, semicolons, colons, and dashes to set off phrases and clauses as appropriate. LEARNING TARGETS 1. Identify and punctuate equal adjectives in a sentence. 2. Locate and punctuate parenthetical elements in a sentence. 3. Use the comma placement inconsistencies among answer choices as a way to identify potential equal adjectives or parenthetical elements. 257b TEACHER MANUAL
Warm-Up SLIDE 258.1 Give students 5 minutes to complete the warm-up question. SLIDE 258.2 1. The correct answer is B. Choice A is incorrect because the phrase frolicking over fields of coral describes what the stingrays have been seen doing and is the object of the verb, so it should not be separated with a comma. Choice C is incorrect because it does not include a comma after wings to correctly separate the parenthetical element from the rest of the sentence. Choice D is incorrect because the adverbial phrase over fields of coral should not be separated from the verb frolicking. Choice B is correct because it correctly separates the parenthetical element twirling and flapping their wings from the rest of the sentence using commas. Chapter 29: Punctuation 258b TEACHER MANUAL

Groundwork

Application

In this section, students will review two unconcise sentences and examine a solution that eliminates the problem. Another common obstacle that can send readers stumbling through a sentence is wordiness. What happens when a sentence is too wordy?

It’s hard to figure out what it’s saying.

EXERCISE B SLIDE 130.1

We like our writing like we like our lectures: short and to the point. No one wants to listen to someone ramble, and adding all kinds of extra fluff to a sentence only gets in the way of what we’re trying to say. For example, let’s look at the first draft in number 4. Who’d like to read that for us?

“Muckraker” was a term referring to journalists who advocated for reform. “Muckraker” was also a word applied to Upton Sinclair, who was a journalist who investigated the unhygienic practices of meatpacking plants.

Whoa. That’s a lot of information crammed in there, and trying to pull out the details is a little like trying to untangle a ball of old Christmas lights. It’s definitely not fun and even a little frustrating. What about the first draft makes it not concise?

It’s repetitive. The sentence says muckraker and journalist more than once.

All the information is spread out across two sentences in such a way that the writer is getting repetitive when they really don’t need to be. How can they fix this?

They can edit it out of the sentence.

SLIDE 130.2

Let’s see if they managed to do that in number 5. Is that sentence more concise?

Yes.

Groundwork:

But something went wrong. Why is this first revision not quite right? It lost a lot of information.

SLIDE 130.3

Editing out extra words is only effective if we don’t cut out the important stuff. Imagine trying to cut the tag off of a new shirt and ending up with no sleeves and a hole across the shoulders. We need to pull it back and just cut the stuff we don’t want.

Did the writer get it right in sentence 6?

Yes, it’s concise without losing important information.

By focusing on just the important details, the writer was able to communicate everything they wanted to without overcomplicating it with extra wordiness. Concision at its best.

THE APPROACH

When you are challenged to correctly punctuate descriptive words and phrases on the test, use the following steps …

1. Locate equal adjectives or parenthetical elements, if any appear.

2. Eliminate answer choices that contain incorrect comma placement.

10. Which version of the sentence below is punctuated correctly?

Cephalopods, a class of animals that includes octopuses and squids possess three separate hearts that pump oxygen-rich, blue-colored blood throughout their bodies.

A (as it is now)

B Cephalopods, a class of animals that includes octopuses and squids, possess three separate hearts that pump oxygen-rich, blue-colored blood throughout their bodies.

C Cephalopods, a class of animals that includes octopuses and squids possess three separate hearts that pump oxygen-rich blue-colored blood throughout their bodies.

D Cephalopods a class of animals that includes octopuses and squids possess three separate hearts that pump oxygen-rich, blue-colored blood throughout their bodies.

12: Trap Answers

because it contains recycled words, such as small, equal fee and budget. Choice D is incorrect because it is an outlier. The passage does not discuss the happiness of drivers in correlation to shorter commutes. Choice C is correct because the passage explains how those who drive the most pay the most because they use the road more frequently, which supports the idea that the cost of repairs is being spread equally among all drivers.

Practice:

29: Punctuation

SLIDE 265.1

Give students 5 minutes to complete the wrap-up question.

SLIDE 265.2

2. The correct answer is A. Choices B and D are incorrect because naval officer is an adjectival phrase that should not be separated with a comma. Choice C is incorrect because the phrase the son of a naval officer father and Spanish-speaking mother should not be separated with a comma because it describes Franco as the son of a father and … mother. Choice A is correct because it correctly offsets the parenthetical element the son of a naval officer father and Spanish-speaking mother from the sentence using commas. 265b

The correct answer is D Choice A is incorrect because it is an example of recycled words, using words like reasonable and fair to make it seem appealing. Choice B is incorrect because it is an outlier; benefits for local governments are not mentioned in either passage. Choice C is incorrect because it is a distractor. Though it seems possible that the author of Passage 2 would not agree with the author of Passage 1, there is no evidence to support the idea that the author of Passage 2 thinks the opposing author is purposely distorting and exaggerating their information. Choice D is correct because the author of Passage 2 explains how the equal tolling of drivers would be more challenging for the lower earner who would have a more difficult time budgeting $50 each month to account for their driving needs, a fact that is unacknowledged in Passage 1. SLIDE 108.3 2. The correct answer is C Choice A is incorrect because it is a distractor. The author does not specifically compare toll roads to non-toll roads. Choice B is incorrect

Mastery through Research and Development

The foundation of our curricula is deep research into standardized tests and student performance. We have extensively analyzed:

• Over 20,000 actual ACT and SAT test items.

• Hundreds of ACT and SAT standards and content dimensions.

• Over 50 million student responses to ACT and SAT questions.

• Thousands of pages of test prep practices from across the industry.

• Decades of education research papers and best practices.

All of this means that—unlike any other ACT or SAT prep curriculum—our products are:

• Proportional:

We spend more time on what the test weighs most heavily and less time on what the test deems unimportant.

• Improvement-focused:

We teach the skills students are most likely to be able to improve, not necessarily where they are the weakest.

• Comprehensive:

We cover all of the major question variations that the ACT and SAT can throw at students and prepare students to be successful with each type.

• Up to date:

We’ve built our programs from scratch from the most recent tests and are constantly analyzing newly released assessments for trends.

Boot Camp for the SAT

What do we teach in the Boot Camp for the SAT?

Reading

• The most difficult passage is not the last passage. Students learn to read the passages in a unique sequence that helps them avoid running out of time and losing points needlessly.

• One question in each passage is almost always the hardest. Students learn how to deal with it and avoid having it shake their confidence.

• We give students tips for actively reading the passages and avoiding common pitfalls that eat up all their time without giving them any points.

• Citing evidence questions require students to give justification for their answers. This adds to item difficulty, but students who have attended the Boot Camp can use this structure to their advantage.

• College Board has touted that they have eliminated esoteric vocabulary questions, but what they have really done is shift the focus to context. We show students how to use answer choices like a built-in dictionary to arrive at the correct answer.

Boot Camp

Writing and Language

• Questions gradually increase in difficulty, which makes time management tricky. We show students how to manage their time and maximize their points.

• Punctuation marks can kill your students’ scores but not if students apply the tricks they learn in the Boot Camp to semicolons, colons, and commas.

• Answers that sound right are often wrong, but we show how students can use their ear to their advantage with a tip they won’t find anywhere else.

Math

• The Math test is half your students’ score, which is why we devote half of the content time in the SAT Boot Camp to math.

• Simple errors kill SAT Math scores. In the Boot Camp, we catalog the most common errors and help students avoid making them.

• Students may not be used to the grid-in format that appears at the end of each Math section—at least not until they complete the Boot Camp.

• All Math questions are worth the same number of points, but as students progress, the questions gradually increase in difficulty—with an important caveat. We show students how to approach the Math questions in a new

• On some questions, students end up guessing, but in the Writing and Language test, some guesses are far superior to others.Students will learn how to play the odds on the SAT to maximize their scores.

• Some students will overthink their way to the wrong answer—unless they follow our tips in the Boot Camp.

sequence that ensures they have time to get to the easy questions. (Some of your students are missing out on simple questions at the back of the test!)

• One strategy trumps all others in Math, but it requires that your students have a deep understanding of how it works and how to extend it to the trickiest questions that the Math test can throw at them.

• Your students will learn the guessing strategies that convert blind guesses into extra points—strategies that only high-end SAT tutors are teaching.

Our Story

MasteryPrep’s founder, Craig Gehring, earned perfect scores on the ACT and SAT while still in high school. He started tutoring, and soon he realized that there was no ACT or SAT prep program designed for underperforming students: everything was geared toward helping high-income students compete for the top schools. What’s more, the students who most needed the help with their ACT and SAT scores could not afford any prep at all. If low-income students were going to have the same level of preparation as their more affluent peers, it needed to happen systemically—through the schools themselves.

MasteryPrep developed ACT Mastery—the first mastery-based ACT prep curriculum—and piloted it successfully with 200 students at two high schools. As word of mouth spread, MasteryPrep went from those two initial school partnerships to more than 100 in its first year.

MasteryPrep has added products and services to meet runaway demand, including practice testing and reporting, bell ringers, and online software, and has increased personnel from less than ten to more than 100 to ensure all customers and students have quality experiences with MasteryPrep products and services.

MasteryPrep has been listed as the nation’s fastestgrowing K-12 education company two years in a row (Inc. 500 2016 and 2017) and in 2017 became the preferred provider of ACT preparation for the Council for Opportunity in Education.

In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced a temporary shutdown of schools, disrupting in-person learning. Like all educational providers, MasteryPrep had to pivot to a virtual platform to continue providing college readiness resources to, at the time, its more than 200,000 students. MasteryPrep launched an online adaptive test prep program and released a new course offering platform that over the last two years has helped the company double its student reach, impacting nearly 400,000 students through partnerships with 625 school districts and institutions.

Since 2012 , we have helped more than one million low-income students achieve college readiness at no cost to the students or their families. And we’re just getting started.
