August Hello there, Matchbook girls. Fall may be just around the
corner, but we're not ready to kiss summer goodbye just yet.
Our August issue is full of people with sunny dispositions that believe in chasing their dreams. We think you'll find it pays off. Brothers Shep and Ian Murray of Vineyard Vines ditched their day jobs fifteen years ago to sell ties out of their Jeep. It may not have seemed like the safest bet at the time, but given that they now have boutiques from coast to coast, we think they were onto something. Stepping into their nautical themed Greenwich boutique we found it hard not to smile. Their fun, New England–inspired duds evoke memories of clam bakes and beach reads – a perfect fit for the Matchbook girl. Next we headed down to Charleston, South Carolina, to catch up with fashion designer Lauren Lail. We think you'll find her King Street boutique, Library, sweet as can be. Lauren turned her passion for the vintage hunt into a career – in addition to selling her own flirty ready-to-wear line, Library also boasts a killer collection of vintage apparel and accessories. This fun-loving Kentucky native certainly gets our stamp of approval. Which brings us to our cover girl, Christiane Lemieux of DwellStudio. Where do we even begin! We knew we liked her the second we stepped in the door. The gal is laid back, funny, and whip smart to boot. Then there's the fact her family's SoHo loft is so chic we simply didn't want to leave. We're so proud to have such a gracious, talented, and vibrant woman gracing our cover this month. We hope you love DwellStudio and Christiane as much as we do. We may just start a fan club. ngrid Bergman, the breathtaking beauty cherished for her role in Casablanca, was born on August 29, 1915, in Stockholm, Sweden. Much of her adolescence was surrounded by tragedy - both of her parents having died before her fourteenth birthday. After their passing, an aunt took care of Ingrid, but it was only a few months until she, too, died. The teenage orphan was eventually raised by an uncle. Ingrid’s first encounter with film came from her father who owned a photography shop. He would film his daughter in short home videos, encouraging her interest in the arts. During her teenage years, she participated in theater productions at school. After graduation, she made her first stage debut while studying at the 26

Royal Dramatic Theatre School. Her life-changing role occurred in 1936 when she played a piano teacher who had an affair with her student’s famous violinist father. The film caught the attention of a Hollywood producer who remade the film in America, with Ingrid in the starring role. By the early 1940s Ingrid had settled into a Hollywood pace, recognized for her beauty and wholesome character. Having married Swedish doctor Petter Lindstrom in 1937 and giving birth to daughter Friedel Pia in 1938, she encompassed the female ideal of the period. In 1942 Ingrid acted her most famous role in the film Casablanca, where she played Ilsa, Humphrey Bogart’s long-lost love. The movie was not only a box office hit, but has
remained an enduring classic with Ingrid earning generations of fans. She then sought to take on more diverse roles, prompting three Academy Award nominations in that decade, including the Oscar for her portrayal of a Victorian housewife driven to insanity in the 1944 film Gaslight. Bergman worked on a couple of films with Alfred Hitchcock, and many of her fans consider 1946’s Notorious to be her best work. Also in 1946, Ingrid played Joan of Arc in the Broadway play, Joan of Lorraine. The role received much praise and earned her a Tony Award. Ingrid was a hit on screen and off. Scandal struck when Bergman became involved with Italian director Roberto Rossellini during the filming of Stromboli
(both were married to other parties at the time). She became pregnant with Rossellini’s child and begged her husband for a divorce causing an international sensation and costing her the adoration of her American fans. She gave birth to Rossellini’s son, Roberto, and relocated to Italy where they married and continued to collaborate on films. She gave birth to twin daughters, Isabella and Isotta, in 1952. In 1956, Ingrid made an American comeback. She returned to the States and won another Oscar for her starring role in Anastasia. She divorced Rossellini and married a theatrical producer from Sweden, Lars Schmidt. Once again, her popularity grew in America and she spent the remainder of her life working on films, television, and the stage. Bergman passed away on her sixty-seventh birthday in London, England, after a long battle with breast cancer. The international star is remembered by the more than fifty films that attest to her beauty, grace, and talent.

After countless requests from her girlfriends to borrow pieces from her closet, the Kentucky native decided to open a showroom in her low-country home. It's hard to pick a favorite! I would say the Waites Skirt because I collaborated with one of my Novel. partners on the piece. Way Way Allen painted the print and then I had it transferred to fabric. Also, the Josie Shorts have been great – with the elastic waist, I was able to wear them until I was twenty-six weeks pregnant! What do you love most about Charleston?
I love the people in this city! So many amazingly talented people! Oh, and the food, the beach, the fashion and the history aren't so bad either. What's next for Library?
The beat goes on! Fall/holiday will be coming soon...think warmer colors. I'm a huge fan of navy. Then the spring/ summer season will bring another round of vintage-inspired pieces. We continue to build our vintage collection as well – it's a revolving mix of gorgeous finds! We just brought back some loot from Palm Springs that will be up on the website soon.

Vineyard In 1998, two brothers in Martha’s Vineyard decided to quit their day jobs to chase their dream of selling ties. Their family and friends were dubious at first, but today, as Vineyard Vines approaches its fifteenth anniversary, it’s safe to say they’re all on board. The brothers’ modest inaugural tie collection has since expanded into a full lifestyle brand with New England inspired hats, totes, apparel, and more. They now have stores from coast to coast with loyal whale-wearing fans from Newport Beach to Palm Beach. The Matchbook team caught up with Shep and Ian Murray at their Greenwich, Connecticut, shop to get the inside scoop on this new American classic.

What inspired you to start Vineyard Vines?

darling From her vintage cookbook collection to her insatiable wanderlust, DwellStudio founder Christiane Lemieux is a Matchbook girl through and through. Since founding her home furnishings company in 2000, the Canadian entrepreneur has delved into furniture design, penned a book, and collaborated with Target. Her first title, Undecorate, won critical acclaim and the Ottawa native is already hard at work on a second. Our team dropped by the SoHo loft Christiane shares with her husband and two children for a glimpse of this thoroughly modern Matchbook girl in her super chic element.

It definitely has. Canada is interesting; it kind of has one foot in the American aesthetic and one foot in the European aesthetic. There’s a lot of Scandinavian influence up there. I moved from Canada to New York when I was twenty to attend the fashion design program at Parsons. A f t e r s c h ool yo u w ork e d for I s aa c M i zra h i and t h e Gap. W h at wa s t h at like?
I learned a ton about a very high-end business and then a very well-run business. For Mizrahi I would go to the fabric mills and look at unbelievable
fabrics. We were designing prints. It was very cool. Then the Gap had Mickey Drexler at the time – very well run. I purposely had two very different experiences. I took in a lot from both jobs. Ho w d i d yo u t ran s i t i on i n t o t h e s h e lt e r i nd u s t ry ?
I had a friend whose husband bought a home furnishings brand and he wanted to start to do proprietary product. He got me to come on because he knew I was doing surface textile design. I eventually put some of my own stuff on the floor and it sold, so I was like, “I’m just going to start a company.” And I did. matchbook

It was very geometric, very Scandinavian influenced. It had bedding, tabletop, pillows, and throws. It was a lot, but I knew that stuff was easy to ship. The last thing you get into is furniture – it took us ten years to get there. The logistics can be very difficult.
I would say eclectic, modern, luxe. Like this carpet – it's silk, but it’s a neutral. I like clean lines, but I like a little extra. I also like to mix periods. I think that defines my style. There are so many. When I was in the Condé Nast archive I went through years of old House & Garden magazines and what amazed me is that people like Billy Baldwin and David Hicks and Dorothy Draper – now obviously we think of them as greats, but even then their work leaped off the page. Even then they were truly great. W h e r e do yo u g o t o g e t n e w i d e a s and i n s p i rat i on ?
I travel all the time and before I go places I do a lot of research. I always hit the flea market wherever I am, whether it’s Frankfurt or Shanghai, and I always go to the local museums. Also, just walking the streets of New York is inspiring. Living here in SoHo I am 72

It’s just around the corner. I’ve always lived in SoHo. Our office is here. It felt very authentic to us to be here. Sometimes on my way home I’ll drop in and check on the merchandising. There’s also a whole renaissance happening in lower SoHo for furniture and we wanted to be part of that.

It’s amazing. My kids are exposed to so much. I can take them to see Willem de Kooning at the MOMA. There’s always something interesting for kids to do whether it’s exploring one of the city’s new parks or going to the Big Apple Circus. It was a lot of space for not a lot of money six years ago. The place was kind of crazy and people couldn’t see past it. We saw a great open space that we wanted to transform. my first degree was in art history, so a lot are about that. I spend a lot of time at the Strand. I think it’s the greatest place to find vintage cookbooks. I also just love books with beautiful linen covers. I always pick up a book if I’m at a museum exhibition. I go back and look at them for inspiration.
an artist named Robert Swain. They bought it down the street at the OK Harris gallery and brought it all the way back to Canada. It lived there for thirty years and then we brought it back. Now it’s just around the corner from where it was originally purchased. It’s come home.
