Note from Katie & Jane A U G U S T 2014
W elcome Matchbook girls! This August our goal is to encourage you to entertain. Daunting though it may seem, having guests over can be as simple or
as extravagant as you please. Whether it's a casual beachside bonfire or a sitdown dinner for twelve, we hope you'll embrace the festivities and flaunt your hostessing style. The coast-to-coast features in this month's issue should inspire you to roll up your sleeves and start planning a special fete. First up, we ventured down to the land of sweet tea and juleps. Melissa Blanchard, owner of Columbia, South Carolina, Vanjean and Pout boutiques, is your quintessential Southern hostess. Matchbook joined her at her Sullivan's Island home to soak up cocktails and the cool ocean breeze. Dapper waiters served guests a bevy of champagnes and the sprawling veranda made us feel like Scarlett O'Hara. Needless to say, Matchbook can't wait to return. Moving on to the Midwest, Maggie Revel Mielczarek of Leland Gal invites us to Michigan for a soiree at her charming Fishtown shop. Maggie's friends reunite in Leland each summer to catch up and savor the local specialty, cherries. We love Maggie's enthusiasm for the Midwest and her ability to infuse her gatherings with colorful, local touches. We're itching to redo our powderrooms in Leland Gal lattice wallpaper.
Lastly, our cover stars, Alexis and Wade of Negranti Creamery, invite us to an ice cream social on their California farm. Nestled in the Central Coast wine region, the expectant duo makes the most of their stunning scenery by entertaining al fresco whenever they get the chance. Naturally they incorporate their allnatural goat's milk ice cream in the dessert course. We can't wait to give Alexis's mouth-watering ice cream sandwich recipe a try. Now pull out your recipe (or cocktail!) book and invite over some friends. They'll be thanking you, trust us.
Wishing you many a successful soiree! KATIE + JANE

EMILY POST
PORTRAIT OF A L ADY
The queen of manners was born Emily Price, the daughter of a Baltimore architect, in 1872. Her family eventually moved to New York where Emily attended finishing school and became a fixture in polite society. She met her future husband, Edwin Main Post, at a ball on Fifth Avenue. Her book Etiquette was first published in 1922 and was on its eighty-ninth printing when she passed away in 1960. Read on for a glimpse of the dynamic woman behind all the politeness.
. Post played the banjo and played 1 it well. Banjos were considered a very fashionable instrument in the 1890s.
. In 1915 Post and her two sons 3 took a cross-country road trip. The early roads were poor and they often found themselves stuck in the mud. Post wrote about the adventure.
. Her first book on manners, 4 Etiquette, was written in longhand
over the course of a year and a half. Post was fifty years old when it hit bookshelves in July 1922.
. Etiquette originally cost $4. 5 Today, the eighteenth edition of Etiquette is on bookshelves and fetches $39.99.
. She divorced her husband in 1905 . In her lessons, Post warned 2 6 due to his indiscretions with chorus girls that a girl without a chaperone is and aspiring actresses. His philandering had made him the target of blackmail.

. In 1950 Pageant magazine 7 named Post the second most powerful woman in America—the most powerful, Eleanor Roosevelt.
. You are, in fact, allowed to 8 prop your elbows on the table. Post
said, “It really makes no difference.”
9. Post was not initially a
believer in women’s right to vote, but she later apologized for her antiquated thinking.
. Despite her champion10 ing of it, Post claimed to dislike the word “etiquette because it suggested an elitist attitude. She wanted the manners of polite society to be simple, not stuffy. matchbook

aggie Revel Mielczarek spends her days by the water of Lake Michigan, and her colorful designs have us
wishing we did too. Each summer the artist’s friends reunite in Michigan to catch up over cocktails and pay a visit to her charming shop, Leland Gal. A former art educator, Maggie’s cheerful, hand-painted textiles adorn everything from pillows to purses, and they’ve been quite the hit. We caught up with the Midwest native for cherry cocktails and conversation. PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN GESSNER

WHAT WAS THE OCCASION FOR YOUR GET-TOGETHER?
The girls at the party are from Texas, Kentucky, Michigan, Wisconsin, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Leland, Michigan, a resort area where we all spent our summers, is the tie that binds us together and our friendships have been life long. We wait all year to reunite, and this was a perfect evening to toast our cherished summers here. WHAT WERE YOU EXCITED TO SERVE?
For me, it’s always about setting the tone with color, light, and local treats. My best friend, Sara Irwin, and I often entertain together—she’s usually in charge of the menu and I’m in charge of the decor. It makes planning a party stress free. I developed the fun cocktail using Chateau Fontaine’s local cherrywine, threw together some bright local veggies, and Sara used the Village Cheese Shanty’s brie to make the amazing grilled brie with cherry thyme relish. Rachel Carlson and Greta Bell of the Dam Candy Store attended as well, and brought us the vibrant sweets. 36

HAS THE MIDWEST INFLUENCED HOW YOU ENTERTAIN?
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT MICHIGAN?
It really is tough to beat Certainly! I’ve lived in a northern Michigan the Midwest my entire summer. Leland is a small life. Viewing the beautiful town that’s peaceful, safe, natural surroundings and breezy, and familiar. It is using what is available the warm sun on your skin to make for simple, fun at the beach at sunset, entertaining is the only campfires with friends, way I know. One of my chilly boat rides at night, favorite elements in life the wind through your is the spontaneous gethair, andpine needles together. Day of, we’re all under your feet. It’s all free . . . what can we bring very tactile and free. In a and see you in two hours. way, everyone can be a kid again when they arrive for the summer here.

TELL US ABOUT FISHTOWN.
Fishtown is a collection of weathered fishing shanties, smokehouses, overhanging docks, fish tugs, and charter boats along the Leland River in Leland, Michigan. The area was almost sold as one piece of commercial real estate in 2004, when a group of dedicated citizens formed the Fishtown Preservation Society and started efforts to pay for and preserve the last working fishing village left on the Great Lakes. WHEN DID YOU OPEN YOUR SHOP HERE?
The shop opened just last summer! A friend recommended we put our name on the waiting list for a retail space in Fishtown. I knew how coveted these retail shanties are and was told it would be at least a five-year wait to be interviewed. So I figured, why not? I had just discovered I was pregnant. In November, the Fishtown Preservation Society called to tell me that there was indeed a spot opening up and that I would have to submit my formal business plan in a few weeks to be considered. It was a whirlwind. I waddled, matchbook
43
large and in charge, into my interview over Christmas break. In January, they called to let me know I got the space. I was half excited and half terrified. In March, I had my son Tommy, and in May, we opened our doors. WHAT INSPIRES YOUR HAND-PAINTED TEXTILES?
It is my intention for my fabrics to exude the way we all feel when we are here by the water—laid back, youthful, free, and content. My textiles are inspired by the nature that surrounds the area, the activities you can do here, and the feeling that you get when you are by the water. DO YOU EVER INCORPORATE YOUR DESIGNS INTO YOUR PARTY PLANNING?
Yes, I have often used fabric to wrap wine bottles and as prints for name cards and invitations. I am also aware of the large impact of my prints and try to pair them with clean, solid colors to make them pop and not overdo it. A little goes a long way. WHAT ’S UP NEXT FOR LELAND GAL?
I have been blessed with 44
matchbook
knowing some of the most talented seamstresses in Michigan and hope to always continue to support them and keep the Leland Gal store in the heart of Fishtown. It would also be my dream to be licensed and partnering with other large companies and to expand my brand to other waterside communities. I love doing the product design, and I’d love to focus solely on the creative end someday. After spending twelve years as an art educator, I would also love to start a fund to help benefit art education in public schools.

Maggie’s Entertaining Tips Spend a couple of days planning out how you want the night to go, and do the
legwork ahead of time so that you aren’t tired before the party even starts. Keep it simple and don’t overthink it.
Teamwork. Combine with a great chef (I am lucky enough
to have one in my husband.) or a great friend to make the party even better. Usually something new and fresh is born from collaboration.
Give your guests something to do. People really don’t
love idle chitchat, however, a successful dinner party to me is when storytelling happens naturally, or when there is a friendly competition to connect you together with your guests and create new memories.

Melissa’s Entertaining Tips
1
Select a standout item on your food or beverage menu and build around that. Hence, Rosè champagne was the star of this party and I designed the entire soiree, from food to atmosphere, around it.
2 3
Keep the affair simple yet interesting so not to overwhelm your guests with too many options. Everyone makes decisions, large and small, all day long. Your guests need to just be. Candles and greenery from the yard work for every occasion.

I would probably invite a combination of fashion designers (including Phillip Lim) and friends who appreciate what those designers create. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO LAUNCH YOUR COLUMBIA BOUTIQUE, VANJEAN?
The Vanjean concept was born when the previous tenant, a well-established women’s clothing boutique in the current Vanjean space, decided to close. I secured the lease and, after a brief renovation, opened with the same clothing lines as the previous store, but with the new name and an updated look. HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT TO CARRY AT THE BOUTIQUE?
I am the Vanjean customer. What I like and what catches my eye is the litmus test for a brand or item to make it to the sales floor. WHEN DID POUT COME TO BE AND WHAT INSPIRED ITS LAUNCH?
Pout was created after a visit to Richmond, Virginia, about twelve

We are lucky to be surrounded by such natural beauty; it really makes outdoor parties (almost) completely effortless. Here in Paso Robles there's a time we call the "golden hour,"
which is when the sun sparkles through the oak trees and the fields seem to glow gold. When entertaining, I try to plan our event so guests can experience this magical golden hour for themselves. HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR GUESTS? matchbook

An ice cream social is a fun, easy way to entertain. It takes minimal effort, and who doesn't love a party based around ice cream? I prepped by making the ice cream sandwiches, sun tea, and flavored waters the day before. That way, on the day of, I was able to set the table. ANY ENTERTAINING TIPS FOR THE MATCHBOOK GIRL?

enjoy yourself! Your guests can sense your stress. Who cares if everything isn't perfect? If you're having a great time, your guests will be too. You want your guests to be enjoying themselves so much they don't even notice you forgot to serve almost half the meal. (This may have happened to me last Christmas Eve . . . And guess what? No one was the wiser!)
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN NEGRANTI CREAMERY?
I had graduated from college and quickly realized I didn't want to sit at a desk for the rest of my life. I have always loved cooking and animals, so I thought of a way to marry the two. Start a sheep dairy and make ice cream from the milk—more than one person thought I had gone crazy! I decided to go for it, regardless of the fact

I had zero dairying or ice cream making experience, and I am so glad I did. To anyone wanting to start their own business my advice is don't be scared! If it doesn't work out as planned, there are always other options. You don't want to get to the end of your life wishing you had taken that chance. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT OWNING YOUR OWN 78
