Note from Katie & Jane O C T O B E R 2014

H ailing from California and New York, there's something about Southern belles that has always intrigued us. Is it their perfectly polished ensembles?

Their flawless hostessing skills? Or perhaps, it's those impeccable manners? This October we explore the fascination with three stylish ladies south of the Mason-Dixon. First up, we have Jane Pope Cooper, South Carolina's favorite jewelry designer. The stylish mother of two invited us to her Sullivan's Island beach home where she goes to relax with family and seek fresh inspiration. Jane's effortlessly cool style and fashion-forward designs make her a truly modern Southerner. Her evil eye studs are a longstanding Matchbook favorite—we hope you enjoy Jane and her work as much as we do. Next, we headed to historic downtown Charleston to make the acquaintance of Leda Jackson, the designer behind baby clothing company Pixie Lily. Also a mother of two, Leda's bustling home life includes five pet chickens to boot. Pixie Lily's tiny couture creations are on every expectant mother's wish list, and for good reason—one touch of

the airy cotton batiste will make your knees go weak. A special thank-you goes out to Leda for letting us in on her modern-heirloom magic. Lastly, we voyaged down to the Big Easy to hang with Texas native Hattie Collins Moll. We've long admired her impeccably curated boutique, Hattie Sparks, and jumped at the chance to share its new makeover. One glance at the palm leaf wallpaper and we knew it was Matchbook material. We hope you are as impressed with Hattie's entrepreneurial spirit as we are! We wish you a stylish October, whether you're down south, up north, or somewhere in between!

Yours truly,

KATIE + JANE

GR ANDMA MOSES PORTRAIT OF A L ADY

Primitive American artist Grandma Moses became one of the country's most famous painters in her late seventies. Born in 1860 in Greenwich, New York, Anna Mary Robertson was a farm girl destined for artistic greatness. Read on for more interesting facts about the folk art icon and late artistic bloomer.

1 Grandma Moses didn’t complete her f irst painting until she

was seventy-six years old. She picked up a paint brush because her arthritis was hindering her usual craft of choice, embroidery.

2 Her very f irst paintings were sent to the county fair with a

sampling of her raspberry jam. Though her jam had won a ribbon, nobody noticed the artwork.

3 It was New York art collector, Louis J. Caldor who f irst

taught French painter, Henri Rousseau. She had never heard of either of them.

7 The only formal

education Grandma Moses had took place in a oneroom country school. At age twelve she went to work on a farm as a hired girl.

discovered her artistic talent. While passing through Hoosick Falls he spotted some of her paintings hanging in a drug store, priced from $3 to $5. He purchased them all.

8 She grew up in a family of ten children and went on to marry

for tea in 1949. The President played the piano for the elderly artist.

took inspiration from familiar farm activities such as soapmaking, candle-making, and the making of apple butter.

Moses painted more than 1,000 pictures in her lifetime, twentyf ive of which were painted after her 100th birthday.

GROWING UP IN TEXAS, W H AT D I D Y O U WA N T T O BE?

As a kid I was obsessed with Nancy Drew and Harriet the Spy, and definitely thought I would grow up to be a detective or some sort of special agent spy. Looking back, I think what I loved so much about these characters and their stories was that they didn't sit around and wait for adventure to happen to them, they went out and found it. Reading those books instilled in me from a young age the notion that it was okay to explore, ask questions, and strike out on your own to make things happen. Sadly, my spy career never took off, but I like to think that I still took some really great lessons from Nancy and Harriet. W H AT I N S P I R E D OPEN UP SHOP?

I moved to New Orleans about six and a half years ago to complete my Master's Degree in Art History from Tulane University. During that time, the city was still bouncing back from Hurricane Katrina. I recognized a hole in the boutique scene— there wasn't much that bridged the gap between low end and high end. There also 26

wasn't much on the boutique scale that offered an all-encompassing shopping experience or sold new, unheard of, or just-established brands. There were so many local and Southern designers doing really wonderful work. I knew I wanted to give these designers and artists a retail platform from which they could launch. WHERE DID THE NAME S PA R K S C O M E F R O M ?

Sparks is actually my middle name! I was named after my dad's paternal grandmother, who was also Hattie Sparks Collins. I feel lucky that my parents chose to give me a unique name that I love so much. Professionally, I go by Hattie Collins Moll, but after I got married I couldn't think of parting with any of my names, so legally, I'm Hattie Sparks Collins Moll! HOW DO YOU SOURCE YOUR WONDERFUL MIX OF MERCHANDISE?

I travel to a few markets each year, typically New York or Dallas, and also buy from vendors online and those who come to see us on the road. Since we do carry so many independent designers, there's also a lot of working one-on-one with them 32

or their teams, which I love. Building those relationships is really important to me and they've led to some really fun collaborations and brand development. One of our biggest strengths is carrying things that look expensive and high end, but won't actually break the bank. W H AT I N S P I R E D T H E B O UTIQUE'S RECENT M A K EOVER?

This spring, I started to feel that the interior of the store wasn't reflecting the success we've had and didn't match the strength of our brand. We opened pretty quickly, so many decisions were made out of necessity, and I wanted a space that was more modern, thoughtful, and had a cohesive, clear style. I took a trip to Nashville at the end of May and spent some time in the 12South neighborhood and was just so impressed by all of the businesses there. Everything was done so well, all of the branding was so on point, and I experienced really unique moments within each store. I came back to New Orleans inspired and called my friend Marcie of Bloodhound Studio to ask for her help. I knew she would knock it out of the park! matchbook

I'll be volunteering or in meetings! I'm involved in quite a few things around town— Junior League of New Orleans, YAYA Art Studio Gala, Education Advisor for Kappa Alpha Theta at Tulane, Co-chair of the New Orleans Museum of Art Young Fellows. I really enjoy being a part of so many different organizations and feel like it connects me even more to the city I love so much. When I do have downtime, I'm usually at the dog park or hanging with our two pups. We have a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Boone and a miniature long-haired Dachshund named Jackson. New Orleans lets you be who you are and doesn't ask questions. I've lived in a lot of different places and it's the only place that I've felt like I was really encouraged to discover what made me unique. It's a city that if you love it and really stick with it (because, honestly, it's not always the easiest place to live) it will love you right back. Owning a business here is wonderful because the innate culture of New Orleans is to support its 36

own and to back what's local and different. There seems to be so much written these days about what makes New Orleans special—the food, the music, the history—but what it really boils down to is the people. There's so much warmth, acceptance, and kindness here, and I always miss it so much when I travel. W H AT A R E Y O U M O S T L O O K I N G F O RWA R D T O T H I S FA L L ?

Fall is my favorite season in New Orleans! I love seeing the return of all our student shoppers, the cozy clothing that arrives at the shop, and the preparations that go into the holiday season. I'm looking forward to some special in-store and offsite events we have lined up, like a trunk show I'm taking on the road in partnership with the wonderful store Amelia in Oxford, Mississippi. On a personal note, I'm looking forward to cooler evenings spent on the back porch with a glass of wine and a good book while my husband grills and the dogs play in the yard. Those are my favorite nights.

The genesis for Pixie Lily came when I started sewing for my own baby, Suzanne, shortly after she was born. Even though I got an F in sewing at a girl's school in Charleston, I had the basic skills to create a pattern and make a few day gowns. I wanted very simple designs. There is such a rich tradition of beautiful hand sewing in the South but I think all the smocking, lace, and artistry is overwhelming on small babies and children. It becomes more about the creation and less about the wee one wearing it. Rachel Zoe likened my look to "the little black dress for babies." I loved that and was completely flattered. Rachel really got it. It's about dressing your baby in something lovely and appropriate but nothing that will distract from them. I believe in the power of productive procrastination so I wait until the last minute to design collections. I don’t have a design background and dropped out of a sculpting class at Tulane after I found out the first day that I would need to keep a sketchbook so this is the most challenging part of Pixie Lilyfor me...getting what I see in my mind’s eye on to a piece of paper. I am getting better but my process does involve strapping myself to my desk and occasional unladylike bursts of profanity as I try to get something on paper for the ninth time. WHERE DO YOU LOOK FOR I N S P I R AT I O N ?

I love researching vintage patterns and I scour antique malls and flea markets for additions to my archives. 48

Really, children have been wearing variations of the same styles since the 20’s Babies and toddlers are not little adults and they need to be comfortable. Their clothes should encourage movement and play. Why put a waistband on someone who has trouble with digestion or a tie on a little one with no neck control? It doesn’t make sense and it certainly doesn’t feel good to them. I want Pixie Lily to be comfy and timeless. W H AT M AT E R I A L S D O Y O U LIKE BEST?

I love beautiful pima cotton jersey, batiste and fine cotton flannels. These fabrics wear beautifully and if you hang them to dry you really don’t need to bother with an iron What techniques are used? The layette collection is known for the simple crochet tatting that is used to finish the pieces. The ladies actually turn under the edges as they are making the tatting and attaching it to the clothing. I love handmade details but really like to keep them to a minimum so I don’t make anything too fussy or busy. I’ve done some sweet vintage matchbook

I am so lucky to have my little farm in the city. It's a craftsman cottage in Cannonborough-Elliotborough with a perfect little garden in the front for entertaining and a back yard that's big enough for our garden, chickens, and beehives. We're harvesting something twelve months out of the year from honey and figs to okra and kumquats. My son even started planting cotton and has a nice little crop to harvest this fall. Pixie Lily is going to ship cotton seeds with all of our orders starting next January (from my son Chisolm's crop, of course). It's such a rewarding seed to plant and I am convinced I can raise up some serious gardeners if we start sending seeds out with instructions. A cotton seed is so much more exciting than a lima bean in a paper cup. Little ones are going to love it. 54

That rich sense of place is still here, a rootedness that is quintessentially Southern. People still have a desire to make a connection and know your story. I was in a cab in New York a few years ago and I knew I was going to love my driver because he immediately greeted me with a smile and direct eye contact. It turned out Mr. Sherrard was from Anderson, South Carolina. It was the best trip I ever had to LaGuardia. We talked about food, family, and what a special place our part of the world is. Mr. Sherrard had lived in New York longer than he had lived in Anderson, but being a South Carolinian was still part of the the fabric of his identity.

My mother and grandmother always wore amazing jewelry. Whether it was costume or fine jewelry, it made a statement. My dad designed a sapphire ring for her to celebrate their fifteenth anniversary. I loved that ring and realized how special that piece was for my dad and mom—it stuck with me. DO THE WOMEN IN YOUR FA M I LY H AV E A N Y B A U B L E S YOU'VE LONG ENVIED?

Besides my mom’s sapphire stunner, my aunt and mom shared a ring (formerly a brooch) and earring set that is over 150 years old. When I got engaged, my aunt gave me the ring. I borrowed the earrings for my wedding day. They are truly incredible antique pieces. W H AT K I N D S O F C L A S S E S D I D Y O U TA K E T O E A R N Y O U R F I N E J E W E L R Y D EG R E E ? back to graduate school in New York, I took fabrication classes. These were so helpful. It was no frills, no fuss, no design—just technique in metal work, wax carving, wax buildup, mold making, and casting. It was awesome to be a part of a piece start to finish. My dear friend Sydney and I started Balboa, piddling with vintage pieces and reworking them. It was so fun! We sold at Barney’s in the first four months. Sydney left Balboa to become a mom two years later and I continued the relationship for many years. Jane Pope Jewelry came out of my growing interest in fine jewelry. I wanted pieces that I couldn’t find—less serious fine jewelry. W H AT B R O U G H T Y O U F R O M N E W Y O R K T O S O U T H C A ROLINA?

Currently I am wearing the rectangle studs, heart cuff, seed bangle, skinny bullet necklace, delicate leaf ring, arrow ring, twig rings (two gold and one silver), name ring (with my daughter’s nickname, Popie, on it), my wedding rings, and a diamond band my hubby gave me for our fifth anniversary last year.
