riter and filmmaker Nora Ephron (1941–2012) stole the hearts of millions with her witty essays, screenplays, and books. Known for her sharp, often deprecating sense of humor, Ephron was a native New Yorker and often spotlighted her beloved city in her work. Read on for some lesser-known facts about the woman behind cult classics such as Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally.

Some of my favorite holiday memories center around setting the table in preparation for a family feast. When I was little, my mom would let me craft place cards for the Thanksgiving table. I’d use my best cursive and colored pencils to scrawl each guest’s name and a little reminder of one thing we had to be thankful for. A few days before Christmas, we’d unpack my mom’s china adorned with evergreen trees and reindeer, which seemed even more special due to its limited use. These days, I still get a rush from designing a holiday table that feels different than the year before; one that sends a rush of delight to family and friends the moment they lay eyes on the festive linen tablecloth, delicate vintage glassware, or flickering candlelight. A beautiful table contributes to the magical feeling in the air and creates all kinds of anticipation for the feast ahead. This year, I incorporated shimmering touches and metallic accents to cast a warm glow over my holiday table, inviting guests to eat, drink, and be merry until long after the sun goes down.

SURE, YOU COULD SPEND HOURS IN THE KITCHEN MAKING PASTRY FROM SCRATCH AND THEN METHODICALLY ASSEMBLING THE TREE . . . OR YOU COULD ORDER ONE FROM A GREAT LOCAL BAKERY—MY PREFERRED ROUTE! EITHER WAY, SOMETHING THIS TALL AND DRAMATIC IS ALL THE CENTERPIECE YOUR HOLIDAY TABLE WILL NEED.

FOR THIS LOOK, MY FRIEND AND FLORAL DESIGNER ELIZABETH LEWIS GATHERED SIMPLE BUNCHES INTO MERCURY GL ASS VASES, AND WE ARRANGED THEM ON THE MANTLE DIRECTLY BEHIND THE TABLE FOR A STUNNING DISPL AY. THESE INCLUDED RANUNCULUS, TULIPS, WINTER BERRIES, AND BAY LEAVES.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST REALIZE YOUR PASSION FOR INTERIOR DESIGN?

It crept up on me. I think it happened when I got to House & Garden and started to really meet designers all over the country and experience their work in different ways. Their creativity made me understand that emotion plays a role in interior design that is as important as form or function. WHO HAS INSPIRED OR ENCOURAGED YOUR CAREER IN THE INDUSTRY?

Women like Bunny Williams, Charlotte Moss, and Carolyne Roehmâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;they never stop being creative and relevant in different mediums. They are smart, chic, and generous, and I never stop learning from them. YOU HAD ORIGINALLY INTENDED TO FLIP YOUR HOME. WHAT CONVINCED YOU TO KEEP IT?

The light. The way it poured in every afternoon and flooded our cute little house filled me with happiness. It felt shameful switching loyalties from our beloved home twenty minutes away, which we had worked so hard on and loved so much, but we kept wanting to spend more and more time here at the lake. I think there's something 42

about coming out of the driveway and seeing water every day that is very seductive. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT LAKE WARAMAUG AND THE SURROUNDING AREA?

Location, location, location! Where else can you hike land trust trails in the early morning, be in Manhattan for a noon meeting, and take a sunset cruise by cocktail hour? Plus, our town of New Preston is filled with great shops and an adorable waterfall. There's so much to do here all year round. Life feels so full you want to go explore, but you always want to come home. HOW DID YOU APPROACH THE DECORATION OF YOUR HOME?

I used the lessons I had learned from all the designers over the years who inspired me; their lessons on how to create rooms that feel edited but also deeply personal through detail, color, and the dash of the unexpected. While I didn't have a big budget, I did have a plethora of images at my fingertips. I leaned on them a lot and tried to be as fearless in translating elements for myself in some kind of way. For example, I realized how much I responded to rooms that embraced orange in some kind of way. It clearly made me so happy, so why not have it greet me every 46

day in my own mud room? And for that matter, leopard pattern always made heart leap; so why not lay down a leopard patterned runner while we're at it? All I can say is that when I come home, no matter how bad the day is, I already feel better. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE ROOM IN YOUR HOUSE?

Hmm . . . It's a toss up between my bathroom, with its glossy black walls and inviting tub, and my living room, where I can read in the afternoon while watching the light filter past our red bar and fiddle fig plants. WHERE DO YOU DO MOST OF YOUR WRITING?

I do most of my writing at my circular white dining table that is on one side of my bedroom. To my left, I look out at the apple orchard and the beginnings of the woods, and I love to see the dogs scampering about. Straight ahead is the pool and just beyond, the lake. Having so much visual beauty inspires me, rather than distracts me. Depending on the season I'll decide how to reward myself when I'm finished: with a walk, a swim, or a hydra bike paddle. WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR A NEW BOOK?

" phase and then there's the "Wait, why hasn't anyone done a book on that?!" part, and before long, I'm dragging corresponding images into a document and sending them to my wonderful editor Ellen at Rizzoli. After a phone conversation with her, it's like we already have the book laid out in our minds; we can almost visualize it. That's when you know it's going to work. But it usually always starts with an image and a feeling. WHAT IS YOUR RESEARCH PROCESS LIKE?

It's like being a visual detective. For about a year, I hunt down the images 50

I love as soon as I see them. The next step is to reach out to the designer and the photographer: Are the images available? Can we afford them? May I pretty please showcase them? After securing them, then we need to write a wise and witty caption and confirm the crediting. It's a lot of organization but at this point, I have the system down pat. The best part is seeing the first layouts and suddenly all the pictures from hundreds of different origins come together and have another chance at inspiring people again under the one roof of a book. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEXT TITLE, ITâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S THE LITTLE THINGS?

I knew that I wanted to have a career doing what I loved and it had to be creative. I would never thrive in a corporate environment and style has always been something I cared about. Before I opened Holiday I interned at an art gallery, did wardrobe styling for print and television, and worked for an interior designer. Opening the store allowed me to use those skills to curate a stylish collection, put my personal stamp on it, and invite the world to see! HOW DID YOU SETTLE ON THE N A M E H O L I D AY ?

I remember sitting at my dining room table trying to work out a name and yelling "Holiday!" It's a common word but is packed with memories of celebrations. We also have our own private labels:Â Holiday "Pretty Little Thing", Holiday "Pretty Little Sister", and Holiday"Pretty Little Vintage". If you've ever shopped at the store, you know it is most definitely pretty and little. HOW DID YOU SNAG YOUR P R I M E L O C AT I O N ?

My first location was very humble. We opened on the second level of a brownstone above a dry cleaner. The space had been a nail salon. We put in hardwood floors, a chandelier, black and white striped awnings, and lots of other gorgeous details. matchbook

In 2004 Holiday moved down the street to its current prime location, 53 Charles Street, thanks to a tip from our mailman. I love our current space (formerly a florist's studio),which sits between my two favorite streets on the hill, Chestnut and Mt. Vernon. The fitting rooms used to be a walk-in flower refrigerator. W H AT D O Y O U L O V E ABOUT BEACON HILL?

There is so much to love about Beacon Hill. It's gorgeous! The cobblestone streets, brick sidewalks, gas-lit street lights, historic architecture, window boxes . . . It’s also a strong and supportive community. Beacon Hill is a true neighborhood where you can't walk down the street without stopping to chat. WHERE DO YOU FIND ALL THE BEAUTIFUL THINGS INSIDE THE SHOP?

From all over! It's the most fun part of my job. I love searching for smaller design houses that aren’t overly represented in department stores. New York is an excellent source for talent. I've also traveled to Europe for inspiration and have worked with a French designer for many 62

years. We also have a growing in-house collection of handmade-in-Massachusetts dresses and skirts—each piece can be custom made. It’s such a special service to our clients. We are also expanding our private label lineHoliday "Pretty Little Sister." It's a great contemporary assortment, with most pieces retailing for under $150. Holiday "Pretty Little Vintage" is a customer favorite! We love finding fabulous vintage items and reworking them. We shorten hemlines, remove sleeves, add details, remove details . . . Customers love going through the racks and finding truly one-of-a-kind pieces mixed in. During the colder months, our reworked vintage fur vests (from outdated coats) are insanely popular. There is a long process of restoring, cleaning, and contouring, but the end result is a treasure. Bravo to my mom who is seamstress extraordinaire—she's got talent! WHO HELPS YOU RUN THE SHOP?

It's a small team, but it's packed with talent. My sister, Andrea, runs the show when I can’t be at the store. She is also a skilled dressmaker. I couldn't do this without her. We are also privileged to have Damon—the most fun person to shop with—on the sales floor. He is gracious, hilarious, and wonderfully disarming. Our customers love him and his personal flair. HOW HAS THE BOUTIQUE CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?

stayed the same. I've grown up with many of my customers! Over the years I've really tried to diversify the price points throughout the store to make it as welcoming as possible. For example, a college student on a tight budget can easily find a treat for under $50. In terms of branding, we've stuck to our guns on color and concept: pink, white, black, and feminine, vintage charm. We still love it when people come in the shop and say, "It smells so good in here. I want everything. May I move in?" W H AT D O Y O U L O V E M O S T A B O U T T H E H O L I D AY S ?

The holidays on Beacon Hill and in the shop are magical. The community comes together to make this dreamy neighborhood a winter wonderland. Lights and garland are hung and stores open their doors with treats and beverages. The Beacon Hill Holiday Stroll, complete with sleigh rides, Santa, carolers, and a tree lighting ceremony, is one of the most anticipated events of the year. W H AT ' S U P N E X T F O R H O L I D AY ?

We just launched a sweet online shop, Souvenir by Holiday, which features many of our "cheap and cheerful" accessories, jewelry, and clothing. It allows our customers from near and far to have a little souvenir from Holiday arrive at their doorstep. Expanding our private label collection is another exciting venture and I'm in the beginning stages of an exclusive collaboration with the French designer in Paris, who I mentioned I work with. I'm also starting to test a few classic items for the home, like faux animal skin rugs and pillows. People always want to buy our fixtures, so this way they can! Stay tuned!
