November

With autumn in full swing it’s time to

count our blessings. We have much to be thankful for in 2013 and you, dear readers, are at the top of the list. We have such fun putting together these monthly issues and hope you delight in reading them. This month we pinched ourselves when we met with American style icon Aerin Lauder. We have long admired her classic sensibility and were thrilled to get to know the woman behind the impossibly chic brand. We’ve been spritzing her new fragrance Ikat Jasmine every day since. Next we headed out to Connecticut to spend the afternoon at the

home of Asha founder Ashley Dodgen-McCormick. The stylish entrepreneur is also mom to a darling two-year-old named Annabelle. We willingly took turns playing dress-up in her mother’s jewels. Last but not least, the party moves to Chicago where we feature a lavish dinner party hosted by Neapolitan Collection founder Kelly Gordon and her friend Meredith WoodPrice. Fashion designer Wes Gordon and jewelry designer Irene Neuwirth were the evening’s guests of honor, and the decor was as glamorous as the guest list. Needless to say, a good time was had by all.

Wishing you the happiest of Thanksgivings with a second helping of pumpkin pie! Katie + Jane

Tennis - Small Sound

Philomena

The husband-wife duo behind Tennis returns with this five-track EP that takes their trademark pop sound to a new level. This album marks the Denver-based band's first with their new label, Communion Music. Thankfully, their catchy vocals and doo-wop flair remains. We've had the first track "Mean Streets" on repeat.

Based on a true story, this heartwarming film stars Judi Dench as Philomena Lee, an elderly English woman who teams up with a BBC reporter to find the son she gave up for adoption decades prior. Raised in a strict Irish Catholic community, the young mother had been pressured to give the child away as he was conceived out of wedlock. Audiences will root for the reunion of Philomena and her longlost son.

T

he eccentric Marchesa Luisa Casati led a surprisingly quiet early life. Born in Milan in 1881, Luisa was the youngest daughter of an affluent cotton manufacturer. When her parents died young, she and her elder sister suddenly found themselves the richest heiresses in all of Italy. In 1900 Luisa married a Milanese nobleman and a year later had her only child, Cristina. The Marchesa had put her own rather isolated childhood behind her and things were about to get interesting.

beauty, her pale skin and striking red hair made for quite a vision.

The Marchesa’s eccentricities multiplied. She began adopting pets – a boa constrictor (It once escaped during a stay at the Ritz Paris.), cheetahs, and monkeys. She would wear live snakes in place of necklaces, though she also loved her Lalique jewels. Said to be the inspiration for Cartier’s iconic panther design, she would walk her cheetahs through the streets at night on diamond-studded leads. Her equally dramatic wardrobe was filled with gowns by Mariano Fortuny She soon fell in love with a and Paul Poiret. Her goal well-known Italian writer was to be “a living work of and their scandalous affair art.” captivated the gossip columns. During a jaunt to America in the 1920s she was entertained by Hollywood icon John Barrymore and publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst. Beyond her flamboyant aesthetic, the Marchesa is most widely admired as a patron of the arts. In a quest for her own immortality she commissioned countless portraits of herself by artists new and old. She preferred avant-garde work to that of typical society portraitists and was a generous and loyal patron to a slew of young artists. The Marchesa's home in Paris had a pavilion in which she exhibited the more than 130 portraits she had commissioned of herself. Despite her seemingly endless funds, in 1930 the Marchesa’s decadence came

to an abrupt halt. She had amassed massive debts, and in order to satisfy her creditors had to part with her pricey possessions and art. An auction was held at her Paris home in 1932 and Coco Chanel was among the eager bidders. Sadly, many of the works sold that day can no longer be traced. The Marchesa eventually fled to England where, thanks to the support of family and friends, she built herself a far more modest life in London. Marchesa Luisa Casati died on June 1, 1957, at age seventy-six and is buried in London’s Brompton Cemetery. One of her taxidermed Pekinese dogs was laid to rest at her feet. Today the glittering star of European society continues to be a muse to many, having inspired fashion designers from Karl Lagerfeld to Tom Ford. Her former Venetian palazzo, Venier dei Leoni, now houses the collection of fellow art patron Peggy Guggenheim. On her gravestone is an inscription of Shakespeare’s depiction of Cleopatra, "Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety." A fitting tribute for the Marchesa, indeed.

What inspired your new fragrance, Ikat Jasmine? Ikat Jasmine was really inspired by blue jeans. When we were creating the collection we really[<--delete] wanted to have one fragrance that felt timeless, effortless, and wearable at the same time. We wanted it to smell familiar, yet pretty and modern. The idea of blue and white I think is incredibly timeless. It’s blue jeans and a white T-shirt.

When we were developing the fragrances we were also developing the fabric collection. The brand is very much about beauty and lifestyle and we thought it would be a special touch. Gardenia Rattan reminds you of a beautiful straw piece of furniture on some incredible porch somewhere. Ikat Jasmine reminds you of a blue and white room. Blue and white is the cover of my book. It was Estée’s bedroom in Long Island.

We love the fragrance packaging. How did the idea come about to incorporate your fabric designs onto the boxes?

Did you have a strong sense of which fabrics and fragrances should be paired together?

That was the easy part. Amber Musk was all about browns and beiges. Evening Rose was a deep rich floral. Ikat Jasmine to me was always blue and white. Gardenia Rattan was about summer memories in the sunshine. Do you have a signature scent that you wear every day? To tell you the truth, what I’m wearing every day is the Ikat Jasmine. It’s so fun to wear. A couple of days ago it got cold for a minute and I switched to Amber Musk, but I really do rotate between the two. I love them all though. I think there’s something really appealing about having multiple fragrances so you can vary depending on your mood, the

time of day, or season. Fragrance is so personal. What was the process like designing the fragrances? We started with the actual notes as concepts. We thought of rose, jasmine, and amber,[<--insert comma] and created concept boards around those notes. We would smell the rose and say there needs to be a touch of spice or an element of surprise, that’s when we added the cognac note. The process of developing a fragrance is almost like cooking. You keep adding and changing. Does the collection evoke special memories for you? matchbook

It definitely does. The whole collection is really based on memories and moments. Lilac Path, for example, reminds me of spring. There’s a lilac bush on my house on Long Island and every spring it blooms. It’s just beautiful and as soon as it comes it goes. Lilacs last a very short time. Every time I smell Lilac Path I think of May and June. 38

How did you begin designing the fabrics?

Do you have a favorite fabric?

I love florals and birds and the idea of heritage with a modern twist. The modern twist for me is the color combination so whether it’s brown or green or blue I wanted it to feel fresh, modern, and feminine. I also love the idea of sundrenched velvets and linens that feel worn. I wanted them to feel like you’ve had them for a while.

I love the Noyak in oyster and I love the zigzag velvet. It’s beautiful. How will you incorporate the fabrics in your own home? I already had pillows made in the Noyak. What’s fun about fabric is you can have as much or as little as you want. You can start slowly with pillows on a sofa or

What inspired you to launch ASHA? I launched ASHA while living in Florence and Paris. As an art history student, I was struck by the beauty, art, and architecture of these two cities and wanted to translate that into a collection of jewels. I met the head of Chanel fine jewelry at a dinner party in Paris and he introduced me to an atelier right near Place Vendome – the rest is history. Where did the name ASHA come from? My mother was born in Cuba, and my Cuban grandparents called me “Asha” when I was a little girl, since Ashley does not quite roll off the tongue in

Spanish. I love the name because you can pronounce it in so many languages and it has an international ring. Travel and language are a huge part of my life – I speak Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. How would you describe the ASHA customer? She is worldly, bold, confident, and sophisticated. Where do you look for inspiration for new collections? I’m mostly inspired by travel and architecture. A recent trip to Turkey informed my spring collection. matchbook

Where are some of your other favorite destinations? I go to Paris and Florence at least once a year – they feel like a second home. But I also love the adventure of traveling somewhere new. Brazil and Turkey are incredible. You recently made the move from Manhattan to Connecticut. What do you love about the change of scenery? I love the simplicity of life here and being by the water. I grew up in Greenwich so I’m a Connecticut girl. 48

You have a two-year-old daughter Annabel. What has been the most surprising thing about motherhood? How natural it is. And what's the most rewarding thing about motherhood? Kelly: Meredith and I share a passion for fashion and fine jewelry. We are both huge fans of Irene and Wes and thought it would be great to celebrate all of these talents under one tent!

Kelly: Wes uses the most incredible fabrics, and he always seems to have the right mix of cool, sexy, and classic in all of his clothes. His signature flare pants have become one of my favorites, especially in leather!

Kelly: We have been doing events and trunk shows with several of the same designers since we opened our doors ten years ago. We thought it would be great to invite many of them back to help us celebrate a decade in fashion.Â

Kelly: Irene and I have worked together for nearly ten years and her designs get better and better each season. I'm drawn to her pieces because they are colorful and vibrant and are pieces you can wear every day, even if they are emerald and diamonds. She has such a laid-back, casual sensibility, just like her gems!

Meredith: I wanted to honor both guests of honor. The turquoise in the tent was for Irene. I love the blue and green stones she uses. The purple was for Wes and a nod to his new collection, which features a lot of lilac.

M e r e dith , what do you lo v e about N e apolita n C oll e ctio n ?

Meredith: I love that when you wear something from Neapolitan Collection you can be lady-like and still edgy at the same time. Kelly's clothes are timeless. 64

Meredith: I tried to find out something about all three of the people being honored and I had fun with it – their favorite foods, drinks, colors. I had a ball designing the cake with Tipsy Cake. Naomi designed a tier for each guest of honor.

Irene: I loved talking to all of the women who like my jewelry. It is really my favorite part of the business. They appreciate fashion and color and feminine, beautiful things. The dinner was truly extraordinary. The tent, the cake, the company…I must have taken a hundred pictures!

Irene: I like how friendly everyone is and how they really seem to appreciate luxury and meeting with the designers. They also know how to throw a great party.

Irene: That is a tough one. I am constantly revolving my pieces, but I can guarantee that it will be a big, bold opal necklace! And one of my carved stone rings. And maybe emeralds…

Just Married

Lee Piper & Andre w Burm an

The location... A private,

coral rock–walled yacht club in Miami's historic Coconut Grove. We met... At a neighborhood

eatery, where I was a regular and he was the chef. The proposal... Happened in

our local park, in the rain, with an antique ring I’d coveted. My dress… Weren’t

“bridal” but felt perfect. I wore Phillip Lim for the ceremony and Zac Posen for the reception. It felt very "us" because…

Of the personal details. I collected eighty vintage plates to match the set we use every day. We honeymooned in…

Thailand, eating street food, mountain biking, and beaching, and in Cambodia, temple-hopping.

married at Covenant Presbyterian Church and our reception was at The Club of Birmingham. We met... We are high

school sweethearts! It all started (ironically) in our chemistry class! The proposal... Took place

under my favorite tree at my parents home! The whole house and backyard was candlelit. It was breathtaking! My dress… Was from Ivory

& White, and my Nana got my Jimmy Choo's on Ebay! It felt very "us" because…

We were surrounded by all of our best friends! And there was dancing – lots of dancing! We honeymooned in…

We haven't gone on our honeymoon yet, but we are saving to go to Ladera in St. Lucia!
