THE ETERNAL RELATIONSHIP The most hidden essence of this world is the intimate relationships among nature, human beings and the built environment. In my opinion, there is an affectionate bond between an individual to the surrounding environment. I personally experience this myself through my everyday life as I always appreciate moments and scenes that I see on each day. Moreover, I have come to realize how closely one is connected to the nature when I was engaged in a strenuous forest-hiking pilgrimage in Northern Thailand. Growing up in an alternative school, I had various opportunities to go on fieldtrips, exploring different local communities in Thailand. All the fieldtrips were done to tackle problems and issues in communities mainly regarding social inequality and environmental issue, by making medias and scientific proofs about them. I found that it is a significant task to find the balance as technologies evolve together with the preservation of the natural environment. Therefore, I truly believe powerful designs will provide solutions to a sustainable future. The effect of great designs can lift the quality of people’s lifestyle, in both urban and rural areas. My artwork is thus done to serve the purpose of portraying this significant relation between the nature which provides places for humans to exist, and the human beings residing anywhere around the globe. In other words, the artwork aims to represent the precious connections I have discovered with the surrounding built environment as well as the natural organic system embracing me.

Project 1 Take me Home It is undeniable that there is an intimate connection between a person and the environment. A connection which anyone needs, in order to feel belonged. The environment around a person includes numbers of familiar people, the resident, the natural surrounding and the city itself. As a student who has just started studying in a country faraway from home, I used architectural drawing as an important tool to express my connection back to my homeland. Two architectural drawings, the ‘Panoramic View of Bangkok’ and the ‘Shifted Identity’ are done as part of the studie of perspectives under the theme of ‘Personal Identity’. The first painting shows a panoramic view of Bangkok from the top of the building, I used black pen to draw with accuracy in order to replicate the real landscape of the city. The second drawing, ‘Shifted Identity’, portrays the confusion inside myself when being mingled by new cultures. More drawings are done to improve the observational skill(see sketches below) and experiment in-depth to convey the message I have through the drawing of architectures.

Collection of Faces

In my life, I have seen various faces, with ranges of facial features, different skin color, different shapes of noses and different types of eyes. I intended to make a collection of portraits to show the beauty of faces from different nationalities around the globe. It is to show appreciation towards the diversity. Drawing portraits is one of my favorite hobbies for my leisure time. The exploration of shadow and highlight on skin tones requires an amount of delicacy and attention. I learned to develop my observation skill from drawing faces of various skin tone and facial elements. It fascinates me to explore the complexity of people’s faces. Big part of my improvement in observing and adding details are taken from portraits. Matchima Chutijirawong Application number : 190045176

Watercolor Painting I would like to show the feeling of the ‘Coming of Age’. According to my personal experience, the coming of age makes one person feel like floating into a different paradigm with no chance of coming back. The watercolor technique is the most suitable medium to create the ambiance of floating movement together with the feeling of emptiness.

Coral Wood is a design for wooden bookend. In order to soften the impression of the wood, I used the coral pattern which suits the size and the texture of the wood. The fret saw was used as a tool to create curvy organic patterns, smoothen the surface with various number of different sand papers and give a finish touch with Camellia Oleifera Seed Oil. I studied the pattern of fire coral, which has the most interesting and applicable pattern to the wood, then I sketch and develop patterns on paper with pencil. 9

Nat u re R e p l i c a The aim of the project is to design a small garden pavilion for public city park. I took the inspiration from the water fern which is a local plant in the water. Small water fern is usually seen in the water pond throughout Thailand. As garden pavilion is an architecture which is deeply connected to plants and nature in many ways, I decided to use the pattern of small water fern as a main element in the structure. The pavilion is expected to give out fresh and relaxing imprssion towards the users, therefore, I cut down unnecessary lines in the form. I also use white color to create a bright and clean garden pavilion. Some sketches are done before making a paper mock-up model for the structure. I took some photos of water fern and study their pattern in detail to imitate similar style on the pavilion. 11

Calm and Delicate Ceramics Collection

Ceramic is the indulgence of three dimensional design and craftmanship. From three years of learning pottery throwing, I develop the pottery into some collections of ceramic cups. Each theme is done through the process of designs, with trials and errors. S U B T L E is a collection of ceramics ware, including a jar, two vases and three cups. I designed the collection with the intention of creating a calm and peaceful sense to the products, the forms are curvy and the glazes show motions inside the surface. I used opaque white, black and dark metallic gold to add more interesting elements to the product.

G L O B A L WA R M I N G The sketches show some initial ideas for the ceramic ware. Some bullet points are made to pin point the concept of the collection. It is also an experiment in glazing techniques. On the right side, some references regarding natural scenery are made. The ice and desert can solidly depict the environmental issue,

‘Global Warming’ and ‘Climate Change’.

The ceramics are hand thrown with care and dipped in two layers of glazes, first with opaque white, later on, blue and green glazes into the bottom of the ceramics. I shake the ceramics to roughly mix green and blue glazes together for a marbling pattern.

Project 7 Life of a boarder in school’s dormitory is

always challenging, I have encountered many minor problems about a new lifestyle. One of them is a space, where I can sit down and relax. I decided to create a sculpture which could create a calm relaxing space for me and my roomates. Due to budget limitations set for each student, I used rags and old white sheets from the art room to make plushy sculpture. The abstract pattern took inspiration from organic forms in the natural environment. It is my intention to show deep connection of human with nature around us in the sculpture.

PROCESS I experimented different patterns by using pens, markers and oil pastels in order to come up with more satisfying pieces. This process took quite a long time as it is important to find the most suitable motifs on the sculpture. The patterns are inspired by small living creatures in the very beginning period of the Earth. The devloped patterns are mixture of amoeba (a single-celled animal), plankton, corals, sea anemone and fungi. Additionally, I explored the use of different color scheme for the pattern as well. The first approach is to use complimentary colors for each pattern. Later on, the color scheme spreaded the range wider as I tried applying similar color tone or pairing two colors to see the effect it has on mood and tone of the artwork. Sketches are done with pencil before making the sculpture. The sculptures are intended to be organic forms. By sewing different sizes of cloth together, it creates various forms of white plushy sculptures. They are arranged in random order to provide a rocky space with different corners that the user can snug in.

The Floating Whale On June 1st 2018, a short-finned pilot whale was found dead with 85 plastic bags filled up to its blowhole on a shore in Southern Thailand. I was so sad at the news that I decided to use art as a means to provoke awareness of the environment catastrophe caused by the plastic waste. My friends and I made a two-meter-long whale sculpture from used plastic bags in recycle stations. We then took it with us to shoot pictures around Bangkok city center. In the end of the day, we were excited and overwhelmed to have spreaded the message to our beloved hometown. 25
