KINGSBOROUGH community COLLEGE the master plan
coney island, brooklyn ny point of interest path of travel
above, we can see various landmarks of the historic coney island, all within walking distance of the college... if we take a look at some of the demographics of the area, we can see that...

youth population
...the area around the transportation hub of coney island is very diverse. There is a strong concentration of various ethnicities; many of whom make less than $45,000 a year. Now this has no bearing on the design of the campus, but its interesting to see how kingsborough itself has sort of “gentrified manhattan beach, possibly for the better...
this large scale map shows the exact location of kingsborough - located on the eastern most part of coney island; it’s relatively small in context, but it’s easily one of the most important pieces of the peninsula..
along the way to kingsborough - students are greeted with a multitude of cultural and ethnic communities; from the poorest parts of coney island, to the Bodegas in brighton beach, and finally down to the single-family homes...

..manhattan beach has very ltitle ethnic difference; despite the fact that kingsborough college represents nearly 80 different countries from around the world. we can see that the single-family homes present on manhattan beach belong to families who make well over $85,000 a year, which is technically double what families just a mile to the west make every year...

since its founding as a college in 1964, it’s grown exponentially; going from an institution of only 468 students to serving nearly 40,000 of them, many of whom are searching for cheap, affordable higher education...
...this growth has done wonders for the college; helping to solidify it’s status as one of the best 2-year colleges around...
but there’s a problem...
superstorm sandy! she blew through and caused nearly $50,000,000,000 in damage all across the united states
devastating floods
unbelievable amounts of damage..
city-wide power outages
locally..
crippled subway system
and nationwide
to give the extent of damage to kingsborough; we can take this aerial view, which was taken pre-sandy, during the summer of 2012...
july 2012
notice the dense tree cover, the grass, the beach, and the shear amount of greenery present
november 2012
...and compare it to this aerial view; which was taken post-sandy, right before winter was about to begin...
notice the beach, which is barely recognizable anymore; the grass, which has been damaged by the salt water; and the hundreds of trees that were either uprooted or completely destroyed from the combination of high-winds and high-tide
the flood maps below show how devastating the storm surge was...at six feet, the surge would have been high enough to submerge most of the buildings on campus - however, Hurricane sandy had surges as high as twelve feet. so it’s easy to imagine just how utterly devastating the water must have been...

the line would terminate at the new transit hub i’m developing for the campus. this transit hub is the center of transportation to and from the campus, and would include parking for 400+ vehicles, a bus stop, and a train station...

...the hard edge, the non-porous pavement, the lack of dormitories on campus and the under-utilized space that the temporary buildings occupy is all to be re-designed...
...and the ground floor plan of my proposal
...notice the porous edge, the commitment to public space on all the ground floor levels, and the new dormitories, which offer striking views of sheepshead bay, jamaica bay, and the atlantic ocean
