erties and at the same time guarantees excellent flexibility and ergonomic fit. The secret lies in the combination of complimentary round and flat spring steel frame profiles. It easily follows body movements and transfers the load perfectly to the hip fins. It also gives the back mesh a stable tensioned platform for the patented Deuter three-sided ventilation system. For backpacks with smaller volume we use a round profile frame for full function and flexibility with minimum weight.

Over decades, from the Thirties to the Mid-Seventies, Deuter’s “Tauern” was the state-of-the-art pack for generations of mountaineers. It was the first backpack with a comprehensive carrying system – “that frees the back with an adjustable strap construction” – and provided some airflow between back and pack. Yet the contact area was limited to a few pressure points and there was one defining element missing…

“We knew we had a true innovation that promised the success we so desperately needed! And we wanted to enter the market with a respective marketing impetus. At the ISPO winter trade show in 1984 we personally invited 600 retailers – which was rather unusual then,” says Johannes Busch. “Yet we didn’t just send a simple invitation card – instead we had produced a special LP, with which we promoted our “airbag backpack”… The show was a tremendous success.”

Aircomfort

30 years 14

A brand history with ups and downs… We went through highs and lows in the 120 years of our company history. As one of the leading brands for alpine hardware, we equipped more or less all of the major German expeditions with backpacks and tents from 1928 into the 1970ies. Our “Tauern” backpack was a best seller and our backpacks that were specifically designed for skiing, climbing or mountaineering were much appreciated by the alpinists. But then came the 80ies – a tough decade for the company. Sales dwindled. It was obvious that things had to be changed. “Deuter was known for its German quality, but the products were ‘too old’ for the market: on some packs you could still find leather straps. It didn’t look too well… The management put high hopes in me. They saw me as the young mountaineer, who would modernize the solid, yet aged image of the brand,” says Johannes Busch, who became product manager at Deuter in the 1980ies.

Deuter Aircomfort – the invention of the mesh back backpack In 1984 Johannes Busch was product manager at Deuter. He was a climber himself, but the brand had a strong hiking focus, so he listened carefully to what they had to say: “I heard so many hikers complaining about their sweaty backs that this became the initial concept for my construction ideas. I wanted to build a carry system that would allow moisture to escape from the back.” It was also important that the innovation was easy to identify and to understand for retailer and user alike. “I had so many sleepless nights thinking about a solution. And in one of those early hours I had the idea with the mesh system. I went to work and created the first prototypes with our samples engineer Horst Billes and a few other colleagues. Mr Bernhard was of great help, too. He was responsible for the leather goods section, but he came up with one major contribution: we had started by tensioning mesh material over a steel frame. Mr Bernhard told us to cover the metal with plastic to keep it protected from rain and sweat.” Although the team worked hard on fine-tuning the system, the management board had its doubts about the success of the project – yet things turned out differently…

Joh ann es Bus ch, 198 0 Inventor of the Air comfor

Hohenstein Research Institute showed results that would revolutionize the concept of backpack systems. The Aircomfort construction was compared to average carry systems in field tests. In fact, the test series with the common backpacks had to be stopped before destroying the moisture sensing element. The new Aircomfort packs continued running through all tests and amazed the team involved: “We were surprised ourselves by the result! It showed that the airy back system could reduce sweating by up to 25%.”

The Aircomfort brought back success In 1986 Bernd Kullmann joined Deuter’s sales team. 1,5 years later he followed Johannes Busch as product manager. “Yet I had planned an expedition to Sishapangma (8.027 m) and Cho Oyu (8.201 m) and was so eager to go! So I pushed my luck: “I will quit if I don’t get that seven weeks off” I said – and the management board let me go. When I came back the job was vacant (again) and I took over. The revival of the brand began with the Aircomfort. When I joined Deuter it was still an uncut diamond and was marketed in the wrong way. People weren’t sure what to make of it. We had to fight hard to clear our reputation. But not everybody was ready to work on that: there were sales reps who sat at home waiting for retailers to call instead of going out there to promote their business. I therefore built a new team with mountain guides Pepi Stückl and Peter Vogler. The three of us also became the first product development team. In general, however, the Aircomfort was pretty successful from the beginning. So we tried new markets and went to the Swiss trade show “Berner Sportmesse”. In 1987 we got our first Swiss order: Boom Sport in St. Moritz Bad placed an order for more than 12.000 Swiss Franks!” The new Aircomfort-System turned out to be the innovation that saved Deuter’s life. The advantages of the ventilated back were easy to see and understand. Sales increased rapidly. Today the Futura 32 is THE hiking backpack in Germany and in 2012 alone we sold 450.000 Aircomfort packs.

What did a typical hiking pack look like in 1984? Two straight cut, hardly padded shoulder straps, a ‘carry’ system with non-breathable lining and a bulky shape – the average hiking pack wasn’t exactly built for comfort.

Confronted with first reservations Heinz Bächli, one of the most famous Swiss mountaineers in the 60ies, owned a sports shop in Zürich – which is a big chain today. “Back then the brand Fürst was dominating the Swiss market. But Heinz Bächli agreed to see me,” remembers Deuter’s CEO Bernd Kullmann. “After my presentation of the new system he simply said: “I’m not convinced.” Many years later he admitted: “I was wrong.” We won over the Swiss market, too. And today we are one of the leading brands there.” Bernd was also confronted with retailers who were scared to catch a cold, because they could “feel the draft” on their backs… In trainings, he therefore always emphasized that a backpack is not a piece of weather protection. But it perfectly complements functional sportswear – the breathability of high-quality clothing is ‘blocked’ when you wear a tight fitting, nonventilating backpack.
