“The Material Culture exhibition is dedicated to a great painter and friend, Ernst Profete. Several of Ernst’s paintings are included in this auction, with all proceeds going exclusively to the Artist.” — Jonathan Demme

Port-au-Prince to Philadelphia Maybe it is my mother’s fault. Lord knows, she used to drag me around to flea markets, swap meets, antique stores and junk shops all of the time when I was a kid. She was also the first amateur artist that I ever witnessed up-close and personal, creating images on paper with painstaking care and focus. Seeing this creative process at home had—I’ve got to brand it this way, I realize—a magical quality to it. What makes us—some of us—have our visual antennae out all the time, scoping out the imagery that adorns the walls everywhere we go? When a friend or visitor comes to my home or office and never once takes a moment to check out what little eye-feasts are hanging on the walls all around them, I am just baffled. I guess some of us just lead with our eyes. I know I do. So I started picking up little things at the places I’d go with Dodie, my mom. If this collecting or gathering thing is contagious, she is the one that first gave me the bug. Years later, when I discovered a little store called the Haitian Corner a few blocks from my apartment in Manhattan, I experienced a transformative moment. I fell madly in love with Haitian art, and I started collecting it, a little at a time at first. But soon I couldn’t stand it any longer and I jumped on a plane (this was 1986) and flew down to Port-au-Prince Haiti to check out the source. I got gobbled up, literally consumed, by the planet Haitian art. I simultaneously fell madly in love with the Haitian people and the great nation of Haiti on that trip, a love affair that will be with me forever. If collecting—can I say ‘gathering’ instead, because in retrospect I feel that’s what I’ve been doing all these years?—art is some kind of ‘bug’ that you can catch from someone, maybe it’s actually heavier than that. I say that because, for some of us, it can lead to a true sense of addiction. I often feel that way, as I try to figure out this mad devotion that I have to art, especially self-taught art, and especially self-taught art made in Haiti, America, Jamaica, Brazil—anywhere and everywhere, actually. If I’m being honest with myself, it has to be branded an addiction because I have an inescapable emotional dependence on it. My eyes have got to have it, this is not a joke.
So, I have been gathering art on all my travels for the past 30plus years, and the time has come—thanks to Material Culture and Jose and Wael—to empty the storage spaces, thin the walls, and find new homes for this art that I have lovingly collected and then mostly hoarded away in store rooms where nobody gets to see them, for too many years now. I’m so grateful to Material Culture for conceiving of this auction as an exhibition, an event where anyone who shows up will get to see this “quirky” collection in full display. Artists whose work I first encountered in the dusty attics of the Centre d’Art or the Iron Market, both in Port-au-Prince, or in the Jacmel Artists Co-op, will now be in a show in Philadelphia! And hopefully will find homes. Wonderful artists without known names—like Gabriel Blanc, Danice Bordes, Paul JeanPierre, and Jacques Hyppolite will finally be on public display in March, 2014 in the City of Brotherly Love. Represented in the collection are many “well-known” artists, and acknowledged “masters” from Haiti, Jamaica and the United States. I am equally excited about newer artists, like Javier Mayoral, a fabulous new talent who sells his own work over the internet at extremely “friendly” prices. I think Mayoral is one of the great “discoveries” of the show and I’m confident this exhibit will bring him a host of new fans. Jah Calo from Jamaica is another artist who sells his work via the internet. Over the years, I have bought art from artists in their homes, or at their stand, or on the street, but who could imagine that when the 21st century rolled around we’d be dealing with artists directly and electronically? I can’t wait to see the sections of the Material Culture Exhibition devoted to the work of Mayoral, of the spirituallycharged “School of Liautaud” metal work from Haiti, and what will for sure be the mind-blowing sight of the wall of St. Pierre Toussiant paintings. It gets my adrenaline pulsing just to imagine such things. So after all these years of gathering and ingesting the work that comprises this Material Culture event, it will be truly amazing for me to enter the vast MC space to see all of it spread out, for all to see. I hope you will find it amazing, too.

Direct From The Eye I first met Jonathan Demme in the summer of 2001, through our mutual friend Leon Sevilla. Leon had a true artist’s atelier on the upper east side of Manhattan, where he worked as an art conservator. Entering the studio was like being transported to another place. It was the quintessential artist’s loft, a movie set in which the actors were easels, paint brushes, and glass bottles of chemicals used for the alchemy process. The studio itself had soaring ceilings, its sloping industrial windows muted by frosted glass that transmitted soft light into the room. The floors and walls were also muted, in grays and varying whites, making the color on Leon’s painter’s palette, full of fresh oils, and in the paintings themselves, jump out. Often, Leon would show me works Jonathan purchased in Haiti. Older paintings were sometimes in poor condition. Leon would use his trained skills on them, magical techniques usually reserved for paintings by old European masters. In Haiti, Jonathan would purchase art from artists directly, or from collectors and dealers in the United States. Un-stretched canvases from visits abroad were unrolled and measured carefully so they could be framed on floaters— Jonathan’s favorite setting. Leon was famous for his special varnishes, which would transform works to precious gems, gleaming in natural or gallery lighting. For nearly 20 years Leon and Jonathan worked as a team, bringing an extra sparkle to works that already radiated in the spirit of their creators. It seems fitting to find that the building at Material Culture— a former factory and train depot—also has the muted colors and the soaring sloped windows, bringing in soft natural light, of Leon’s artist’s atelier. When we first explored the idea of an auction with George Jevremovic, the founder of Material Culture, we knew almost instantly that this would be not just a sale, but also an opportunity to have a cultural and “teachable” moment. The opportunity to exhibit Jonathan’s extensive art collection under one roof has been an exhilarating and irresistible prospect. Haitian works will be on display by region, from Haiti’s northern city of Cap-Haitien to the artistically vibrant port of Jacmel. The installation features “mini-exhibits” where Caribbean art from watercolors to iron crosses to the sequined devotional Vodou flags known as Drapeaus will hang alongside works by American self-taught artists. As the building that houses Material Culture has gone through its own transformations, the expansive galleries will allow us to display the single vision of a world class collector in a salon-style setting. For someone who has worked closely with Jonathan for many years, curating and archiving this sale has been an experience of great discovery. Jonathan loves all kinds of art, but self-
taught art particularly speaks to him. His sensibilities extend beyond borders, styles or labels. As a self-proclaimed “gatherer of art,” he is not limited in quantity either! Jonathan’s many exhibitions set him apart as a collector who has shared his artwork for decades. The art has not only rotated on the walls of his home, but in several dozen public spaces, galleries and museums throughout the United States. In 1997, Jonathan curated the exhibition “Island on Fire,” where over 100 Haitian paintings were exhibited at the Equitable Life Building in Manhattan. The show focused on the very best of Haitian art, both famous and lesser-known artists, giving them equal footing. As a collector, Demme’s emphasis is more about the message the art holds than fame of the artist. This comprehensive exhibit touched on every aspect of Haitian life, from depictions of everyday scenes to historical renderings of liberation. Demme is drawn to the diversity of the selftaught artists’ form and representation, from abstract to political narrative. Last year, a visit with Jim Roche and his lovely wife Alexa Kleinbard serendipitously produced the title for the auction. Jim, an artist and close friend, observed that “Jonathan collects art direct from the eye.” His words rang true and left a lasting impression as a description of Jonathan’s collection, and its compelling work by spiritual artists such as Minnie Evans, Robert St. Brice and Hector Hyppolite. This sale records Jonathan’s many “discoveries,” from summer vacations in Maine to Parisian flea markets to the “populist galleries,” as Jonathan calls pop-up galleries, where art is sold outdoors on the streets or roadsides, whether they be in Port-au-Prince or in the countryside of Jamaica. To quote Jim again, let’s not call it Haitian, Outsider or Self-Taught—let’s call it “Great Contemporary Modern Art.” Let’s embrace the message that this art holds, how it teaches, guides and inspires us in our lives!
— José Zelaya Curator
José Zelaya is an art dealer specializing in Caribbean and Latin American art, whose dealership, Arte del Pueblo, represents the most prominent collections of Haitian art in North America. His relationships with many of the early promoters of Haitian artwork in New York, such as Gloria Frank, Carol Rodman and Leon Sevilla, are two decades old. For the past ten years, José Zelaya has worked with Jonathan Demme, gaining from him an expertise in Haitian paintings of the 1940s and 50s. 7

A Celebration What better way to acknowledge Haitian visual mastery than to celebrate! Rony Chenet’s painted homage of the Port-au-Prince ‘Mawon’ sculpture, an 18th century revolutionary blowing a conch to signal a call to freedom, is a good way to start. Included in a grouping of politically themed works, much of what we celebrate about Haiti is creative resilience and liberatory practice. The art calls out to a world that listens, appreciates and responds to the Haitian insistence on representing democratic values from Pauleus Vital’s ‘Combit’ to the voting scenes in Ernst Prophète’s contemporary social commentary, two centuries removed from Prophète’s memory of the gathering at Bois-Caïmen, a Vodou ceremony that gave birth to the first truly modern revolution. Boukman, Jamaican, and Cécile Fatiman, Haitian, organizers at Bois-Caïmen, can easily be imagined in Evadney Cruikshank’s series of liberation heroes in ‘Jamaica 40 Independent.’ The images of this narrative show travel from historic reflection to spiritual inquiry, with intimate mid 20th century Robert St Brice drawings of loas (spirits) and activated paquets-Congo (assemblage vessels, from which, with heat, spirits emerge), to an ultra-modern Lasirèn made of found recycled material, transformed by Guyodo, member of Atis Rezistans of the Gran Rue. Through their multi-dimensional spiritual configurations, St Brice and Guyodo, although separated by 50 years, have a complimentary appeal, allowing for an open dialogue on belief. Paintings, metals, wood sculpture and sequined ritual objects
have been brought together by Jonathan Demme’s legendary directorial eye and curatorial vision. Haitian art is connected with seasoned and new centers of gravity, including New York in all its parts with a representation of Daniel Pressley’s carved wood panels and oil paintings, modernist works from the flea markets of Paris and London, American landscapes from hamlets in Maine (with a rare Haitian Centre d’Art find to compliment those from Port-au-Prince), a spiritual connection to Jamaica’s mountains that led to Brother Everald Brown, Javier Mayoral’s satiric works on plywood in Miami, Minnie Evan’s intricate floral blooms from Airlie Gardens, and
of course Axé, a Candomblé blessing of peace from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. While primarily the work of self-taught artists, these are creative voices from distinct communities. A map of the poets of Haiti sends us to lyrical creativity, while etched American soda and water bottles clack together, lulling us into a meditation on invention, as we catch an appearance of Gina Lollobrigida on a 1950s movie lobby card, in Spanish. I can now interpret meanings, and investigate material, geographic and somatic connections. Most apparent is the movement and musicality of every object and work of art, an influential Haitian song and dance heritage alive in the squares of New Orleans to the music clubs of Paris, at which Anna Karina performed. Music in Haiti can build from ambient and natural sounds, developing beats that engage musicians inspired by rustling Cap-Haïtian grasses, found in our grouping of paintings from the region. The gentler swaying rhythms shift with Sisson Blanchard’s ‘Vaccine Players’ who increase the tempo, one in a series of watercolors, paintings and forged metal sculptures of drummers, dancers and musicians expressing musical legacies. In the ephemeral Haitian tradition of art for the Vodou peristyle (spiritual space), we present a fleeting show of multiple complimentary exhibits, sometimes quiet, yet often with much to say to one another, including a rare showcase of watercolors, the sculpted lines of Peterson Laurent’s landscapes, paintings of birds, to celebrations of individual artists, among them the “masters of light” Edger Jean Baptiste of Bainet and Bourmond Byron of Jacmel. Whether you connect with a Cap-Haitian memory-scene, from everyday activity to historic action, to an image of a good luck ‘marassa’ twin, or to a reminder of how healthy millet can be for you, I hope you join in reflection and conversation.

Terms and Conditions of Sale The property offered and sold through New Material Culture, Inc.’s (hereinafter MC) public auctions (hereinafter the Property) shall be offered and sold pursuant to the terms and conditions set forth below (hereinafter the Agreement). This Agreement constitutes the complete statement of the terms and conditions pursuant to which all Property is offered for sale. By bidding at the auction, whether in person, by agent, in writing, by telephone, internet bid or any other means, the buyer of the Property (hereinafter the Buyer) agrees to be bound by this Agreement. PROPERTY SOLD AS IS. All Property is sold as is, where is, with all faults. Neither MC nor any consignor makes any guarantees, warranties or representations, expressed or implied with respect to the Property or the correctness of the catalogue or any other description of the Property. In no event shall MC or the consignor be responsible for the correctness, nor be deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin or condition of the Property. No statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a guarantee, warranty or representation. WITHDRAWAL OF PROPERTY. MC reserves the right to withdraw any Property at any time for any reason and to default any sale in the event of an error or dispute. COPYRIGHT AND REPRODUCTION RIGHTS. MC and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the Buyer will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any Property sold. MC expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the Property sold in the catalogue. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for MC relating to Property, including the contents of the catalogue, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of MC and shall not be used by the Buyer, nor by anyone else, without MC’s prior written consent. EXAMINATION OF PROPERTY. All Property is available for examination prior to bidding. The Buyer’s bidding signifies that the Buyer has examined the Property as fully as desired or has chosen not to examine the Property. MC recommends that prospective bidders examine all items in which they have an interest prior to bidding. BIDDING. RESERVES. Some of the Property in the sale is offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and MC below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. If Property is offered with a reserve price the bidding will begin at that price. Otherwise, bidding will begin at a price appropriate in the auctioneer’s discretion. The auctioneer always reserves the right to withdraw Property for any reason he deems appropriate. At the auctioneer’s discretion, no bid of less than one half the low estimate will be accepted from any source, including but not limited to: phone bidding, absentee bidding, internet bidding or bidding in person at the auction. ORDER OF BIDS. Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer, all bids are per lot as numbered in the catalogue. MC reserves the right to determine any and all matters regarding the order, precedence or appropriate increment of bids or the constitution of lots. ABSENTEE AND PHONE BIDDING. Absentee and phone bidding are permitted by prospective bidders who cannot be present at the auction. Please complete the Absentee Bid and/or Phone Reservation form. Absentee bids are executed competitively and confidentially. All reservations for phone bidding are held in the strictest confidence and must be received by 5 pm EST the day before the auction. No additional phone bids will be accepted at such time including additions when speaking with a staff person on the phone. Written absentee bids may be submitted on the Absentee Bid Form up to 30 lots before the item comes up for auction. Leaving an absentee or phone bid on a lot indicates your willingness to open the bidding at one half the printed estimate, and gives the auctioneer the authority to open the bidding at that level, or to open the bidding on a lot with a printed reserve at the reserve price. In the case of identical absentee bids, the bid received first will prevail. Bids left on liveauctioneers. com are not executed until the item is offered in the live auction and the order in which they are received is not a factor. CUT BIDS. We do not accept cut bids, (bids less than the last interval) from the floor or from absentee bidders including phone and internet bidders. Thus, it is possible that a lot could go to another bidder for less than an absentee bid. For example, if the bids are progressing in $10 dollar increments and an absentee falls at a $5 increment we will not take the bid since it is less than the $10 increment. Following are general guidelines for bidding increments: $0-$100 by $10 increments $100-$500 by $25 increments $500-$1,000 by $50 increments $1,000 $3,000 by $100 increments $3,000-$5,000 by $250 increments $5,000-$10,000 by $500 increments $10,000-$30,000 by $1,000 increments $30,000-$50,000 by $2,500 increments $50,000-$100,000 by $5,000 increments $100,000-$200,000 by $10,000 increments Above $200,000 auctioneer’s discretion 214
HIGHEST BIDDER. The highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer shall be the Buyer. In the case of a disputed bid, the auctioneer shall have sole discretion in determining the Buyer and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the Property or reoffer the Property for sale. The auctioneer shall have sole discretion to refuse any bid, or refuse to acknowledge any bidder. At such time as the auctioneer has declared Property sold to a given Buyer, said Buyer thereupon assumes full risk and responsibility for the Property, agrees to sign any requested confirmation of purchase, and agrees to pay the full price, plus Buyer’s Premium, therefore or such part, upon such terms as MC may require. PAYMENT. Payment must be made by cash, approved check, wire transfer, Mastercard or Visa credit cards. MC reserves the right to require bank checks for purchases over $5,000. Personal checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with MC or if a bank authorization has been received guaranteeing a personal check. MC reserves the right to hold Property purchased by personal check until the check has cleared the bank. Buyer agrees to pay MC a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the drawee. MC reserves the right to not issue a Buyer’s number or to withhold merchandise if appropriate credit has not been established. Credit arrangements must be made by the Friday prior to the day of auction so bank statements can be verified. Any bidder that plans on spending in excess of $100,000 should make arrangements with the MC accounting department at least five (5) days in advance of the sale, as a deposit may be required to participate. All Property purchased must be paid for no later than 5 pm EST on the seventh business day following the sale. MC may impose, and the Buyer agrees to pay, a monthly interest charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any Property not paid by the Buyer within thirty (30) days of the date of sale. MC reserves the right to rescind any sale of Property in the event payment is not received within thirty (30) days of sale. BUYER’S PREMIUM. A Buyer’s premium of 25% will be applied to the purchase price of all Property. REMOVAL OF PROPERTY. All items must be picked up, or shipping arrangements made, within two weeks of the day of sale. Items not collected or shipped by the 15th day following the sale will incur storage fees at a rate of $5.00 per lot per day regardless of the size or value of the lot. Items not collected by the 30th day following the sale may be sold by MC or sent by MC to a public warehouse at the sole risk of, and charge to, the Buyer and MC may prohibit the Buyer from participating, directly or indirectly, as a bidder or purchaser in any future sale. No Property may be removed from MC’s premises until the Buyer has paid in full the purchase price including Buyer’s premium. MC shall have no liability for any damage to Property left on its premises after the auction. A defaulting Buyer will be deemed to have granted and assigned to MC a continuing security interest of first priority in any Property or money of, or owing to such Buyer in MC’s possession, and MC may retain and apply such Property or money as collateral security for the obligations due to MC. MC shall have all of the rights accorded a secured party under the Pennsylvania Uniform Commercial Code. PACKING AND SHIPPING. Buyer agrees that packing and shipping are done at the Buyer’s risk and that Buyer will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. Shipping is the sole responsibility of the Buyer. MC will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items. Upon request, MC will provide a list of shippers who deliver to destinations within the United States and overseas. TAXES. All purchases are subject to Pennsylvania sales tax unless the Buyer possesses a Pennsylvania sales tax exemption number. Exemption numbers from other states are accepted in Pennsylvania if presented with a business card or letterhead. Dealers, museums, and other qualifying parties can apply for a Pennsylvania exemption number prior to the auction. Buyer is responsible for any and all tariffs, taxes and assessments that might be made on the Property. International Buyers are responsible for tariffs, taxes, or assessments of shipped items to the Buyer’s country. IMPORT/EXPORT RESTRICTIONS. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the United States, such as items that include material from some endangered species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of licensing for import or export of Property from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the Buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of said Property. BUYER’S BREACH. If the Buyer breaches any of its obligations under this Agreement, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of all Property for which it is the highest successful bidder, MC may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without limitation, (a) cancelling the sale and applying any payments made by the Buyer to the damages caused by the Buyer’s breach, and/or (b) offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the Buyer has failed to pay in full the purchase price, holding the Buyer liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale. GOVERNING LAW. These conditions of sale shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (excluding the laws applicable to conflicts or choice of law). The Buyer agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this Agreement may be brought, and any action against MC in connection with the transactions contemplated by this Agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or any federal court sitting therein. The Buyer consents to the nonexclusive jurisdiction of such courts and waives objections that it may now or hereafter have to the venue of any such suit. AMENDMENTS TO TERMS AND CONDITIONS. No claimed modification or amendment of this Agreement on the part of any party shall be deemed extant, enforceable or provable unless it is in writing that has been signed by the parties to this Agreement. No course of dealing and no delay or omission on the part of MC in exercising any right under this Agreement shall operate as a waiver of such right or any other right and waiver on any one or more occasions shall not be construed as a bar to or waiver of any right or remedy of MC on any future occasion. © 2014 Material Culture, All Rights Reserved 215
