Straw Blocks Systems processes agricultural residues with marginal energy into high-grade building material of merely compressed straw with great insulation values. Special in-house developed machines convert roughly-compressed bales of straw into profiled Lego-like blocks of straw that are stable in terms of nearly any preferred shape and dimension. These straw blocks are transformed mechanically in a lightweight frame into prefab units for facades, floors and roofs. Industrial bespoke work for a complete shell-state building of straw.

ACOSORB DENIM LINE

Acosorb is a seamless acoustic spray plaster. Acosorb applies the product in one phase on any surface. In any desired thickness and on walls and ceilings of any size. The product is available from finished to coarse-grained and in an extensive range of colours. This spray plaster consists mainly of recycled natural cellulose fibres. By mixing with additives, Acosorb optimizes the lifespan and fire safety. In a thickness of 3.5 cm, sprayed directly onto the substrate, an alpha w = 1.0 is achieved.

BUILDING MATERIALS FROM DREDGE

Waterweg is developing building materials from dredged sediments. Dredge is an abundant and expensive waste stream, that unfortunately brings along a lot of CO2 emissions, while it is only applied for low value applications. We want to show that dredge can have a high-quality application as well. Our first product under development is a water permeable tile. Next to the problem of a dredge abundance we also tackle the problem of floods after heavy rainfall in urban areas. In the future we aspire to make different building products such as cladding and street furniture.

IHOG (Innovatie Hub Oost-Groningen) is a cooperation of three companies based in the Province of Groningen: HempFlax, Nedmag and Avebe. EGGSHELL CERAMIC

10 billion eggs a year are produced in the Netherlands, which makes the country the largest egg exporter in the world. Luckily not all 10 billion eggshells are wasted, it’s often used as soil improver in agriculture. Eggshell Ceramic is a circular material derived from this industry to show new possibilities with this organic waste-stream. The project shows that we can also use the material one more time before it is given back to nature. At the end of its lifespan, the material can be broken down in water, this remaining calcium water can be used as a nutrient for lime-loving plants.

VESTIGES

Inspired by the ruins of the city of Carthage, this collection of tiles can be used to compose indoor and outdoor facades. Alouane is modeling relief and textures directly from actual ruins and shaping them into tiles. Her method is based on transferring photography and modern printing techniques into ceramics and other molding materials used for construction and decoration in architecture. Through this technique Alouane wants to create physical and visual connexions between the historical ruins of a city, and its today environnement.

GLASKERAMIK® PATINATED

Glaskeramik patinated is produced by upcycling glass and is itself 100% recyclable. It has a unique, translucent optical quality that shows its crystal-like brilliance when lit up. When left naturally patinated, it has a unique appearance, half-reflectance and texture. Particularly striking, is the magnificence resulting from when a Glaskeramik sheet is back-lit. Glaskeramik patinated exists in 8 colours and can be used for internal decoration, furniture, flooring, wall covering and even for external facades.

ATLAS OF SUSTAINABLE COLOUR(S)

Colour itself is a craft. Its role is shifting from being a synthetic alluring marketing tool to a responsibly produced colourant, which can enhance our wellbeing, save litres of water, and stop depleting natural resources. The project is an invitation to rethink the current use and relationship with colour, a proposition to create an alternative colour system which will grasp the uniqueness of not standardised colour palettes. DIRTY SAND

Incineration of household waste is an internationally recognized waste processing treatment. However, this process generates a new residue of unburned particles and ashes that remain on the bottom of the incinerator. This residue is known as bottom ash. Each individual generates 50kg of bottom ash residue per year, resulting in overloaded landfills and groundwater pollution. Dirty Sand is a research project studying the potential of bottom ash as a primary resource for developing new materials. The research has led to a series of interior tiles made from incinerated household waste.

This project reinterprets the world-famous decorative qualities and design vocabulary of Delft Blue porcelain. By fusing 3D clay printing, computational design, and artisanal glazing, New Delft Blue hopes to unfold a new architectural potential of ceramic ornamentation of the 21st century.

BRICKNIC

Hollow clay bricks can be filled with food and stacked together to build a temporary oven. The bricks build social ties through a shared cooking and eating experience. Inspired by the age-old process of brickfiring Bricknic aims to put social interaction back on the menu and celebrate community spirit. At a Bricknic event, each participant is provided with a brick to fill with the ingredients of their choice. Everyone then gets together to discuss the plan, build the oven, light up a fire and cook the food inside the bricks. Afterward, the oven is taken apart and it‘s time to eat!

Calstar Eco-Line is a complete set of wall finishes that are friendly for the environment, the applicator and the enduser. The Eco-line consists of liquid-based products without the use of titaniumdioxide or biocides. Based on an industrial waste product and biodegradable results in a complete circular system. Introducing the Calstar D’Eco a decorative plaster in the same earthy tones as the nature of its core ingredients. Bright, more industrial looks are also part of the gamma. It can be applied in a matt look or polished like Venetian plasterwork for a more extravagant look.

Richlite is an incredibly durable, extremely versatile, and highly sustainable material made from resin-infused paper. Originally developed over 70 years ago for industrial tooling and pattern making, Richlite has expanded into a premium surface material used in the aerospace, marine, action sports, culinary, architecture, and design industries, and in machine shops and automotive manufacturing. Handmade from many layers of high quality custom craft paper, Richlite’s surface texture comes from the natural variation in the way fibers lay within the paper.

COFFEE POLYMER BY OVPOLYMERS

OVPolymers is a developer, producer and supplier of green polymer solutions. The Coffee Polymer is a polymer that is based on used coffee grounds. The standard versions of this material consist of 30% coffee and 70% green/biopolymers. Depending on the application and process technique (e.g. injection moulding, rotation moulding and extrusion), there are different grades of the compound available. Ranging from long-term use materials which are industrially decomposable, to short-term use materials which are decomposable in about 2 months.

NATURAL BEAUTY

Its character being rugged and vigorous. The natural flax fibre in the linen gives the carpet durability, longevity, sustainability and a pearly shine as time passes. Being all natural with a 100% linen facepile and 100% jute backing, this rug is completely biodegradable. A rug that keeps attracting the eye, but leaves no trace.

Compostboard is RikMakes’ first example that shows the beautiful possibility of living with nature. This product shows how nature can be embedded in our products and living or working environments. Compostboard is a material made from natural fibres and binders. The fibres come from local organic waste streams as hemp chips, straw dust, and old flowers. Compostboard gives the interior a beautiful atmosphere by showing natural surfaces. In the afterlife of Compostboard, the material breaks down to nutritious fibres and sugars. MYCELIUM COMPOSITES FROM GROWN.BIO

Grown.bio makes products with mycelium and organic waste streams. These streams are mixed and filled in moulds. In the mould, this mixture grows for 5 days and is subsequently dried. The end product is strong, light, and shock absorbing. But it is also insulating and fire resistant. Because of the many shaping possibilities, the ‘mycelium composite’ is used by Grown.bio to make products for interiors, packaging and insulation panels for constructions.

AFTERLIFE

A funeral takes its toll on the environment. How beautiful would it be to support nature as we pass on, to give our body back to the earth and help nourish it? Afterlife is a new wearable material that is completely biodegradable created out of leftovers from the food industry and infused with flower seeds. As we pass on, the earth can still use our body to feed on. By combining our body with the Afterlife material, we transform an end into a beginning, creating a greater purpose after death. Shifting the definition of a cemetery into something less grim, for example, a forest or park.

OMLAB: 3D CIRCULAR PRINTING

Omlab developes circular, biobased and 3D-printable material prototypes of (sewage) water waste. BuildMatterial is for construction. It can be printed into building blocks that are stackable and strong as gypsum blocks. Part of Omlab’s research into futureproof options for 3d constructive printing. ItBetterMatter stimulates biodiversity. This biodegradable mixture is suitable for temporary structures. It is the material base of Maacq Oase, a concept by Omlab x Fillip Studios (photo) to combat the negative effects of nitrogen deposition in nature development.
