THE
ACOUSTIC
COLLECTION Materialised has a 40-year history of bringing innovative, highperformance furnishing textiles and wall covering to the Australasian contract interior design industry, with manufacturing and warehousing taking place in the Southern Sydney suburb of Blakehurst. Our Design Studios are located in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Auckland and Singapore. The team is steeped in a culture of ‘making a difference by doing things differently’ - striving to make a positive difference to community, industry, clients and those occupying the spaces we furnish. ACOUSTIC SOLUTIONS Acoustic performance is an important, yet sometimes underrated element of building design. Acoustics shouldn’t just be considered in building types like concert halls and theatres, but also hotels, bars, restaurants, offices, clubs and aged care facilities. Sound that is not managed properly interferes with complex task performance, speech intelligibility, behaviour, and is a potential stress inducer. Numerous diners or staff in open-plan spaces; guests in the halls or adjacent rooms; noise from plumbing, HVAC and elevators; noise from function rooms and exterior noise from vehicles are all sounds that need to be minimised. Materialised offers amazing acoustic solutions for windows, walls and ceilings to improve comfort without compromising the design integrity. A harmonious balance of acoustics and aesthetics.

SOUND ABSORPTION RATES - NRC To quantify our product as commercial acoustic solutions, each is tested and awarded an NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) rating. The NRC relates to the absorption effectiveness of the material, and is calculated by averaging how absorptive a material is at different frequencies. Hush acoustic fabric is tested at 250hz, 500hz, 1000hz and 2,000hz. Whisper acoustic products are tested at 125hz, 250hz, 500hz, 1000hz, 2,000hz and 4,000hz. Taking the average number, it is then applied to the NRC scale of 0 to 1. A perfectly sound absorptive material achieves a 1, whereas a 0 indicates no absorption.

HUSH SHEER DRAPERY You’ll hardly believe the difference that lightweight acoustic sheers will make to a space, achieving NRC results previously unavailable for modern architecture. Watch the video on our YouTube channel. Our Hush sheers absorb sound and improve understandability. They are: • Flame retardant • Wide width • Durable HOW IT WORKS Woven with a ribbon shaped Trevira CS yarn, this filament is the key to their sound absorption, managing the flow of sound waves repeatedly passing through and bouncing off a reflective surface. This changes the tone, becoming muffled, and results in the reduction of sound levels.

“Hush Acoustic Sheers absorb significantly more sound energy than any other sheer fabric that I know of. In contemporary decors where hard surfaces are preferred, these acoustic sheers are an ideal way to introduce desperately needed, unobtrusive, and highly effective sound absorption.” David Spargo, owner of Praxis Acoustics

HUSH SHEER BLINDS The difference a lightweight acoustic blind makes to a room’s acoustic amenity is nothing short of groundbreaking. Watch the video on our YouTube channel. Our Hush sheer blinds absorb sound and improve understandability. They are: • Flame retardant • Wide width • Durable HOW IT WORKS Woven with a ribbon shaped Trevira CS yarn, this filament is the key to their sound absorption, managing the flow of sound waves repeatedly passing through and bouncing off a reflective surface. “We have an open plan office with hard surface finishes everywhere, and it looks out onto the factory floor. It was very noisy and near impossible to have several conversations and phone calls at once. So we made roller blinds using Hush acoustic sheer Frequency White fabric. Not only do they perform well, reducing the echo and intensity of sound in the room dramatically, but they look great too and we often have comments from visitors.” David Reilly, Reilly & Associates.

“To deal with an open plan bar space with multi-use requirements, a drapery solution was decided upon to provide flexibility for the client and acoustic abatement for guests. The solution needed to be both cost-effective and acoustically efficient. Materialised’s acoustic drapery fabric, Midnight, was perfect for the job and was both soft in its handle and weighted in its drape.” Jodie Duddington, Senior Interior Designer, EJE Architecture

WHISPERART ® WhisperArt® is fabric-covered acoustic art perfect for areas where noise negatively affects the soundscape, while adding a visual dimension to the space. Each WhisperArt® panel is constructed with a patented rigid polymer frame extrusion that eliminates the use of adhesives, nails, tacks, or tape, while maintaining constant rigidity. This system allows you to recycle the framework while changing the fabric ‘skin’ if it is damaged, or a change of decoration is required. HOW IT WORKS Each panel contains an acoustic polyester absorber. The soundwaves pass through the outer skin of fabric, through to the infill where the sound energy is absorbed. FABRIC OPTIONS Flame retardant fabric with a modified weave is used for our art, allowing air to freely pass through, whilst maintaining printed integrity. IMAGE OPTIONS We have an extensive collection of images ranging from abstract, landscape, photographic, indigenous plus many more that will suit any project. Or you may supply your own images. The system allows for the precise matching of both patterns and repeat at all locations if using multiple panels. If your preference is a large-format mural site built on either walls or ceilings, refer to our WhisperWall® product. FRAME OPTIONS All art can be box framed with a selection of timber finishes. SIZES We have a range of standard sizes or can create custom sizes. However, transportation of the panels must be considered. The maximum size is up to 1200mm x 2400mm. MANUFACTURING DETAILS Each panel is reinforced with four corner inserts that are riveted into the track profile. 100mm of bleed is used for tucking the fabric and for proper alignment of patterns. INSTALLATION WhisperArt® is supplied fully assembled and ready to install. Installation is simple and can be carried out by a handyman using Velcro or an aluminium split batten z-clip (included) connecting to the panel’s track profile. The other half is screwed onto the wall. Screws are not included.

WHISPERWALL ® & WHISPERCEILING ® Site-built acoustic installations offering increased flexibility and custom design options. WhisperWall and WhisperCeiling are tracking systems that enable tightly stretching fabric over acoustic absorbers on walls and ceilings. There are no standard or pre-fabricated panels as we assemble and install onsite with our team of experienced installers. We work with architects, interior designers, builders, acoustic engineers and end users from Event Cinemas through to home theatres. TRACK PROFILE OPTIONS With 58 tracking profiles to choose from we are able to cater for any wall and ceiling situation. Our 3 most common tracks are for 12mm, 25mm and 50mm acoustic absorbers. We can work with any specification nominated by an acoustic engineer. INSTALLATION Our team can adapt to constructional irregularities and build around objects, switches and other intrusions which may be problematic. Particularities in installation are relative to each space and should be discussed in detail to guarantee safety and efficiency. There are important factors that must be considered such as: 1) Wall/ceiling material (e.g. gyprock, brick, timber, ceiling etc.) 2) Wall/ceiling penetrations (e.g. power points, smoke alarms, ceiling, light switches etc.) 3) Site accessibility 4) Ceiling height (is a forklift or scaffolding needed?) 5) Working hours for installation (day/night?)
FABRIC OPTIONS Flame retardant fabric with a modified weave is used, allowing air to freely pass through, whilst maintaining printed colour integrity . Our fabrics are acoustically transparent allowing for better absorption and increased noise reduction. If you would like to use your own fabric, we would simply need to have the full specifications and a sample to ensure the suitability of the fabric. IMAGE OPTIONS We offer a range of plain fabrics, or you may select from an extensive image library collection which are digitally printed onto the fabric. Our inhouse design team can also develop custom graphics. Alternatively you may supply your own images. Our printed textiles are produced via digital print technology in Sydney using water-based ink. Since the system is built directly into the architecture, installations must follow the restrictions of fabric dimension, not panel size. Large images can be split into numerous sections across the wall/ceiling, allowing for unlimited size options so long as the content and construction is engineered accordingly (and the image tolerates pattern matching).
“The staff at Materialised took on a major part of the internal installation, which included the printed artwork and acoustic insulation. Their workmanship and attention to detail was, in a word, “extraordinary”.We could not be happier with the final outcome and I can’t thank Materialised enough.” Anthos Simon, General Manager, Edge Content & Technology

WHISPERCLOUD® An acoustic hanging panel solution that suspends from ceilings to help control noise. WhisperCloud is a tracking system used to enable tightly stretching fabric over an acoustic absorber on ceilings. The panels are designed to provide noise control in large spaces that don’t allow for dropped ceilings or require additional sound treatment. The panels are suspended from the ceiling, providing acoustic absorption and an appealing spatial aesthetic. WhisperCloud panels are supplied fully assembled and ready to hang including wirelock mechanisims. MANUFACTURING There are no standard or pre-fabricated panels as we manufacture based on instructions from designers, architects or acoustic engineers. This may include determining a certain amount of meterage needed to reduce noise levels to required specification. Due to the increased tension that results from midair suspension, we use aluminium reinforcement on each panel. INSTALLATION WhisperCloud is hung from the ceiling using a wirelock mechanisim. The number of wirelocks used depends on the size and weight of each panel. There are important factors that must be considered such as: 1) Ceiling material (e.g. gyprock, brick, timber etc.) 2) Ceiling penetrations (e.g. smoke alarms, light switches etc.) 3) Site accessibility 4) Ceiling height (is a forklift or scaffolding needed?) 5) Working hours for installation (day/night?)
