Mateus Rosa

This portfolio contains a selection of works produced thus far, throughout my academic and professional career. The works included express my concerns and interests in architecture as a multidisciplinary science. From an imaginative storyteller to a technical architecture project, from the political critique of an academic research to big scale masterplans, the conceptual manner of this portfolio reflects my resistance to define architecture as one isolated craft, but rather a wide and complex field that intersects and expands itself throughout all facets composing our contemporary life.

Academic project Location: Rio de Janeiro, RJ - BRAZIL, 2011. Studio: Revitalization Studio PUC-RIO. Team: Mateus Rosa, Renata Levy and Victor Lutte.

01_ PORTO LIBRARY The Revitalization Studio challenged the students to deal with the issue of the several abandoned old building spread all over the city of Rio de Janeiro to reestablish their purpose.

Bearing that in mind, we have selected a library as a program to revitalize the old house located at the core of Gamboa, the intervention seeks to requalify the void inside the building as a method for urban regeneration.

Gamboa is a neighborhood in downtown Rio, one of the areas most affected by the Rio 2016 urban development plan, the area is located right in the middle of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Porto Maravilhaâ&#x20AC;? zone, the biggest urban intervention program for the Olympic games. The Porto Maravilha aims to refresh the whole port zone, once abandoned, to now attract new corporations as well as middle and high-class residences. But this new movement towards the modernization of the Gamboa, has brought a big concern about the preservation of the neighborhood history. An area where thousands of historical buildings are now stand empty and structurally condemned due to the negli-

gence from the public authorities.

Perspective Section.

Morro da Providencia, is the first favela in history, having the first inhabitants in 1897. Nowadays it is one of the most dangerous communities in Rio, with a lack of education equipment, the library is located strategically in the base of the favela, next to one of the main entrances.

Sacadura Cabral Street, is one of the most important streets in the center of Rio, crossing all of Gamboa and connecting the Moinho Fluminense with the Modern Art Museum at the Olimpic Boulevard where the new museum designed by Calatrava (Museu do amanha) is in progress.

GAMBOA, RIO DE JANEIRO, RJ - BRAZIL. By its central location, the library building, even though small in size, has the power to work as a social catalyst, connecting the favela to the urban circuit. The project is a precise intervention of reestablishment of the old building with the environment and, as a consequence, with its own history. The original building is empty inside and completely disconnected from its surroundings, with the education program as a library, the project is now part of an urban system reconnecting the entrance of the favela with the historical part of the city.

Moinho Fluminense, is a large complex that once was occupied by the first wheat processing factory in Brazil. Today it hosts cultural events, such as exhibitions, markets, and parties. It is one of the most important historical landmarks in the neighborhood, being the flagship of the Porto Maravilha Plan with the project to creates the biggest hotel complex of that area.

The strategy of revitalization and occupation of the void in the old building is guided by two actions: The thirteen meters high book shelter that covers the whole right wall and is access by three lift platforms. The second is the light tower who directs the eyes of the building to its surroundings, in special the Morro da Providencia. Afterward, the void is occupied by two mezzanines with reading stations, the ground floor with the reception and a narrow bridge leading to the stairs, at the basement besides the study area, the garden lounge extends under the public walkway.

02_ SAP: HORIZON REVERSE

SAP. The South America Project (SAP) is a trans-continental applied research network proactively endorses the role of design within rapidly transforming geographies of the South America Continent. SAP specifically focuses on how a spatial synthesis best afforded by design can provide alternative physical and experiential identities to the current spatial transformation reshaping the South America Hinterland, in particular, fast-paced modes of resource extraction and an unprecedented regional integration at a continental scale(primarily through roads, energy grids, fluvial corridors and telecommunication networks). The SAP was launched by Felipe Correa and Ana Maria Duran Calisto, with the support of the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, and the Loeb Fellowship.

Horizon Reverse_ Pampa Tower. The study case for the Infrastructure studio is Chui a border city in the extreme south of Brazil north of Uruguay. The two towns constitute one contiguous urban area, divided by a border street called Avenida Internacional the Brazilian part (Chui) located in the north, the Uruguayan (Chuy) in the South. This region allowed us to go deeply into the Pampas culture, a biome that defines the South of South America (Brazil, Argentine, and Uruguay) as a complex community characterized by elements that make their identity transcend their borders.

The natural condition of the Pampa - its wide and flat landscape, unique flora and fauna - defines the identity of the Gaucho and its inextricable connection with the land. From that perspective, the cities and its infrastructure are established along the south fields. The Reverse horizon_ Pampa tower is the reflection of the elements that built the Pampa horizon, how it defines the urbanity of that region, as well as the identity of the Gaucho as the product of the landscape. This project aims to design the water tower in order to reinforce the cultural richness of the Pampas, and its influence over both small and large scale. Beyond the idea of an infrastructure as a basic system that organizes the cities, the water supply is easily recognized especially in the flat condition of the pampa, becoming a new element of this horizon.

From the ground to the air. The access to the tower is in the basement when the structures cut the soil and expose its face, then we have the Pampa tectonic gallery. Taking the elevator towards the top, the dimension of the horizon is expanded and when finally reached the viewpoint at 95 m high, the mirror sphere as a roof reflects the surrounding in a way to blend all the elements again in a mass thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to identify each component but one unique shape with visitor inserted on it.

The floating infrastructure. The pampa tower holds a 15,000 cubic meters of water in its core, suspended 18 meters from the ground, right in the middle of the border that separates the two countries, also in the junction of the international avenue with road 9 / BR471 that goes from Montevideo to Porto Alegre. The border is materialized and verticalized as an infrastructure tower that attempts to both nations, and instead of confirming the separatist character of the borders, the tower highlights the potential of the border as a zone of exchanges and new opportunities of economic and social interactions between two or more Nations.

03_UIE 1 - Urban imagination exercise UIE-1 (Urban Imagination Exercise) is the first of a series of exercises that aim to explore architecture as a storyteller, using fantasy to connect and better understand realities that architecture can create.

In 2013 Brazil was on the countdown for two of the most important events in the world, the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016, the country was brimming with the optimistic feeling that these two big sports events would finally put Brazil in a better status

worldwide. However, what no one could expect, was that in June of 2013 a rise of 20 centavos (5 cents) in the public bus fare would unleash a wave of riots all over Brazil, it happened indeed, led by MPL (Movimento Passe Livre - Free Pass Movement) thousands of Brazilians took over the streets surprising both the media and political class. The problem is not the public transportation fee, but the fee itself, charging the transportation capabilites of the population throughout the city is a way to deprive the access of a group of people to some parts of the city, coincidentally the most touristic ones. “we want a city for all!”, “OCCU-

All those events, in particular, the start of the protests were a turning point in my thesis that has been developed during this year. The tools that have been given to me by the school, or traditional architecture (plans, sections, renders, parameters, etc.), were not enough to fully comprehend the dynamic and the complexity contained in the urban spaces. This exercise aims to launch a critical view on the â&#x20AC;&#x153;status quoâ&#x20AC;? in which our

profession has been jammed for decades, as well as using the imagination as a weapon to inquire about the insensibility inherent in architectural practice to deal with topics that demand not only a design solution, but also political, economic, social and historical awareness in both the practical and the academic field.

The Profanes

The Profanes are what the traditional city is desperately trying to escape from. Living without any infrastructure, they use masks to be able to breathe in terrible air conditions. Susceptible to all kind of diseases they were contaminated for this new virus â&#x20AC;&#x153;Occupyâ&#x20AC;? who had been spread out around the world through the last two years. Completely infected, the profanes were like a plague into the city, occupying the areas that to them have been denied for so long.Their first target was the downtown and the historical parts of the city, public squares, avenues, historical buildings who represents the power, modernist towers with free pilotis and even the suspended gardens of Burle Marx were easily taken over by the inebriation of the virus.

The domes are paradise, safe, perfectly clean and pure air. Inside the domes, the weather is controlled to their desire, there are holograms projected on the surface of the Dome of the amazing surrounding nature where the Sleeping Giant ensures the peace of mind that the Puritans seek so bad; mainly protection from the dangerous public areas and the violent and unsafe feeling that the Profanes represent. The Puritans felt like nothing could penetrate the domes, not even the virus that is attacking the rest of the city.

The Pure City is a place where the public space was something to be avoided, actually â&#x20AC;&#x153;publicâ&#x20AC;? was a word that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exist in the vocabulary of the Puritans.

Domes under attack After taking over the traditional city, the Profanes were marching towards the Sleeping Giant, the one that from the suburbs was only a blur far away, the one that they were not sure whether it was an illusion or real, and finally the one who hides the Pure City, the city that was impenetrable for them. But, against all odds, the Profanes were getting closer until finally they reached the top of the Sleeping Giant. The view was mesmerizing, the mountains, the sea, and the domes shining like diamonds. The Profanes felt so amazed by the view, they almost wanted to preserve it this way. Yeah, they thought; all that “Pure thing” was kind of fascinating, even though all the American references seemed a little bit weird to the Profane eyes; however, everything was so beautiful.

After getting over the initial beauty, the Profanes realized, actually this didn’t fit in their lifestyle, the domes were like a cage and the Profanes were prisoners of architecture for too long. They needed to be free, and in fact was too late to even think to stop now. The domes were already taking off into the sky and the ones that didn’t take off on time were being destroyed by the occupy virus. The power of the virus was devastating everything in its path and very quickly what was left of the Pure City fell apart.

After the invasion The pools, the huge penthouses with sea views, fancy cars, billboards selling products that they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even know existed, everything was destroyed. For the first time, the Profanes saw in front of them a clear picture of how powerful the occupy virus was, they were paralyzed and the inebriation was slowly turning into a huge hangover, trying to find a reason behind that war scene. Architecture had left the Pure City with the domes towards to the sky and even if it had stayed the architecture would not know how to solve that issue anyway, not without the same solution that created the unequal world they were living i before. The only light was coming from the domes, high in the sky. Up there, the domes were floating on the clouds and the Puritans were living the perfect representation of what their parallel world always was, but now with no more worries of possible invasions. They spend their time on the couch watching their cameras showing the facilities inside the domes twenty four hours per day.

On the ground even with the pessimist feelings of the Profanes, without the regulating power of architecture a new world was able to rise up from the chaos and although no one noticed, the Sleeping Giant was waking up.

Nature appropriation The adrenaline in the Profanes brains caused by the virus was decreasing and was replaced by sadness. The emptiness left by the virus quickly switched to excitement again. Nature was taking over what before was only mess, the Giant left his static position of a portrait on the Puritanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wall to be and active organism again, THE GIANT WOKE UP, and this time it was not an illusion. All the destroyed buildings remaining from the Pure City were taken over by him and his forces of nature, finally setting free the Profanes that now could explore the city in a way never experienced before. Maps, plans, sections, all the tools provided by architecture were subverted and the Profanes could run free giving the most unexpected uses to what remained of the city, uses which architecture would never be able to provide, not even for the Puritans.

The masks were not necessary anymore, the virus had left them and now all the inebriation was provided by their own experience with the city. A situationist experience is implemented and the Architecture was refused or maybe put back in your original place working on the behalf of the humanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s instinct in contact with nature.

04_89+ RIO PAVILION 89plus is a long-term, international, multi-platform research project co-founded by Simon Castets and Hans Ulrich Obrist, investigating the generation of innovators born in or after 1989. Without forecasting artistic trends or predicting future creation, 89plus manifests itself through panels, books, periodicals, exhibitions and residencies, bringing together individuals from a generation whose voices are only starting to be heard, yet which accounts for more than half of the world’s population.

The current urban transformations taking place in Rio de Janeiro - a city engaged in torrential efforts toward construction, materials, and happenings - coupled with the need for a temporary pavilion to host the 2 days events for the 89+ at MAM-Rio, brought the desire to expand the realm of architecture through a greater approximation between art, architecture and construction.

Starting with the sketch of a wall which cuts through MAM’s clear span and its park, designed by one of Brazil’s greatest architect, Affonso Eduardo Reidy, the temporary pavilion makes use of the formwork construction technology as a critical strategy of operation in the carioca urban context and occupies the negative volume (where concrete would otherwise be poured) through an articulation of the formwork and its supports. A pavilion which, much like the 89+ generation, avoids crystallization and places itself in constant process, closing distinctions between assembly, disassembly, and the object. beyond the days of the event, and all the phases of the pavilion and its own ephemeral qualities underscored become part of the discourse of the project and part of the dialogues proposed by 89+. MAM-Rio - symbol of the modern Brazilian project - again under construction, seen here as a new construction site which reconstructs - calling out to young artist, architects, scientist of the 89+ generation - a proposal for one of the greatest legacies of Reidy’s architecture: the potency in the relation between architecture, art, landscape, city and construction.

Canteiro exhibition The exhibition at Studio X Rio (studio coordinate by Columbia university present in some strategic cities around the world), presents the plans and the stunning architectural model of an arts pavilion that the Canteiro group [composed by Architecture and Urbanism students at PUC-Rio] designed for a two day exhibition at Rioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prestigious Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM). The exhibition also counted with a lecture made by the students.

05_RIO NOW The Rio Now is a research group based within the Department of Architecture and Urbanism at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio).

The city of Rio de Janeiro has undergone a series of transformations from 2009 to 2016, since it was chosen as the first South American city to host the Olympic Games. After a long period of economic and cultural stagnation, a sequence of mega-events (including the 2014 FIFA World Cup) led to a boom of projects in this city of 6.3 million inhabitants. In addition to the Olympic installations, there are new museums, hotels, public spaces, real estate ventures, infrastructure projects and a mega restructuring of the port area. However, many promises — such as the cleanup of Guanabara Bay and the urbanization of 260 favelas — were ultimately broken.

This process brought together public and private agents, who invested in different models of partnerships. Once again, the appeal of “modernization” was used to justify a model of interventions strongly anchored in architecture, at a huge financial, social and environmental cost. But how much innovation was accomplished by these projects, and which ones are worthy of the architecture and urban spaces this city has produced in the past? Which alternatives were presented for the highly predatory model that rules many large cities today? To what extent do these projects and interventions effectively contribute to promote equality? What level of involvement did society have? And what kind of city will become of this, in the end?

Timeline The timeline begins in October 2009, when Rio de Janeiro was announced host city for the Olympic Games, and ends on the eve of the Games, in July 2016. Within this chronological cut, data and facts are arranged sequentially in three vectors: urban transformations and artistic events (both focused in Rio de Janeiro) and sociopolitical facts (of broader scope, involving the national context). This data is crossed with socio-economic indices (dollar rate, GDP, number of evictions, real estate market, among others) and significant quotations from the period.

Selected works

Location of the main projects developed in Rio de Janeiro between 2009 and 2016, in relation to the city’s geography. The title “Projectopography” carries the idea of a second topography, defined by peaks of activities of projects, which overlay Rio’s original topography - so many times altered in successive “modernization” processes, with many landfills and hills dismantled, which violently impacted urban landscape.

You can also find answers on our website, which represents the results of a research study undertaken within the Department of Architecture and Urbanism at PUC-Rio (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro). Working with a multidisciplinary network of collaborators, we acted as seismic monitors of the urban transformations in Rio de Janeiro between 2009 and 2016, gathering and mapping out information that was not always publicly available, aiming to build a critical perspective of Rio 2016.

The city you see today is the result of a series of transformations initiated in 2009, when Rio de Janeiro was chosen as the first South American city to host the Olympic Games. After a long period of economic and cultural stagnation, a sequence of mega-events (including the 2014 FIFA World Cup) led to a boom of projects in this city of 6.3 million inhabitants. In addition to the Olympic installations, there are new museums, hotels, public spaces, real estate ventures, infrastructure projects and a mega restructuring of the port area. However, many promises — such as the cleanup of Guanabara Bay and the urbanization of 260 favelas — were ultimately broken. This process brought together public and private agents, who invested in different models of partnerships. Once again, the appeal of “modernization” was used to justify a model of intera ventions strongly anchored latravin o Ca architecture, atag nti a huge financial, socialSa and environmental cost.

A cidade em que você circula hoje é resultado de um intenso processo de transformações iniciado em 2009, quando foi escolhida sede das primeiras Olimpíadas na América do Sul. Depois de um longo período de estagnação econômica e cultural, uma sequência de megaeventos (como a Copa do Mundo de 2014) levou a um boom de projetos e obras nesta cidade de 6,3 milhões de habitantes. Surgiram arenas, obras viárias, lançamentos imobiliários, edifícios corporativos, museus, hotéis. Além de obras na área portuária que incluiram a demolição midiática de um elevado de 7 km e a abertura de 4km de túneis, com trechos escavados sob alguns dos sítios de maior valor parque Olímp histórico, paisagístico e simico da barra da da Tijuca bólico cidade. Mesmo que muitas promessas tenham ficado no papel – como a despoluição da Baía de Guanabara e a urbanização de 260 favelas – a cidade se tornou um imenso canteiro de obras.

06_ QUY NHON HOTEL Along the boulevard and facing the sea, the building consists of two towers that organize the construction of the project in two phases.

07_ RIVIERA BUILDING The landscape project requested for the residential complex in district seven should consider not only the community space inside the building, for instance, the podium but also some areas on the ground floor such as the riverfront and the retail area.

08_ HAN RIVER COMPETITION The competition. On 1st August 2016, the ‘Landscape Design Competition for Han riverfront, Da Nang city’ is officially launched. This is an International Competition organized by Da Nang Department of Construction and the Vietnam National Institute of Architecture. This competition seeks for best planning and landscape design ideas and solutions for the Han River in order to bring new vitality to the city and building up its core values of being in harmony with nature, environmentally friendly, good quality of life, economic and cultural vitality. The project.

The proposed vision is to transform Han River waterfront into a global distinction, catalyze city development through enabling a creative ecosystem for entrepreneurship and ideation, community engagement, and nature rejuvenation. From a fishing village, Danang has become one of Vietnam’s foremost cities.The team strongly believes that now is the moment to reinvent the life of the river to befit a tier 1 city with an experience that will capture growth for the future and

show how Danang is well-positioned for the future. Based on the detailed analysis of the current state of Danang, the team has proposed a strategic and holistic proposal, from business strategy, master planning, detailed landscape design to branding for the Han River Corridor. The project unfolds along the Han River and is divided by 6 main zones: Global, creative, heritage, park, culture and adventure. The project provides some green corridors who goes from the river towards the existent urban grid, its fingers that aim to integrate the positive impact of the new riverfront with the whole city. ‘NetSong’ won the First Prize and the Public Choice Award at the International Landscape Design Competition for Han Riverfront in Danang. The winners were officially announced today at The Prize Presentation Ceremony at the City Administrative Center.

09_ CAM RANH AIRPORT Cam Ranh airport was built by the US troops to serve their military missions during wartime and was converted into a civil airport in 2004. In March 2015, the government requested the project of the second taxiway at Cam Ranh airport, which is scheduled to be put into operation in early 2018. The new terminal will increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity to eight million passengers a year from the current 1.5.

The design and architecture of the new terminal take inspiration from Salanganes’ nest, a bird’s nest popularly seen in Khanh Hoa Province. 10_ LIXIL BUILDING The condition of the existing building have multiple expressions, creating a diverse intention that may lead to confusion regarding the use of the building. The main focus from start has been to develop a facade that reflects the statement of the interior, the identification of the involved parties while creating perseverance in the design aim.

First step was to remove existing facade and curtain walls, in order to develop a new design language. While maintaining the original location of the core and the existing load bearing construction, the idea of protruding green space boxes and outdoor gathering spaces was incorporated, thus enabling a reflection of the concept within the building. Incorporating sufficient solar shading, and unambiguous design language, was carried out using vertical louvers, that further develops on the existing vertical stretch

11_ TECHCOMBANK TOWER The site of three thousand square meters is Located in District 1, the financial and commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City. The massing complies with the setback envelope into 22 floors with the majority of the floors designated to the bank and 20 percent of it to lease. The building splits in two cubes each one containing a void that provides fluid space and visual connection between the floors and the exterior. Floating lounges sticks out from the bridges creating an interest dynamic to the void.
