In a timely celebration of the horse in art, Peter Upton’s exhibition ‘Desert Heritage and the Arab Horse’ coincides with the British Museum’s exhibition ‘The Horse: Ancient Arabia and the Modern World’ (24th May – 30th September 2012). We are delighted to be hosting Peter’s latest exhibition and are grateful to the Directors of the Sladmore Gallery, specialists in 19th and 20th Century Bronze Sculpture, for providing a very appropriate venue. Peter Upton studied art and art history and is best known for his paintings depicting the Arab horse and scenes of the desert. A past President of the Arab Horse Society of Great Britain, an international judge and recognised expert on the history of the Arab horse, his passion for this breed goes back some 65 years to his first pony, a white part-Arab. He travels extensively in the Middle East, carrying out detailed sketches, returning to his studio to complete the oil paintings and watercolours.

Peter is author of a number of books on the subject. His most recent publication, co-authored with HRH Princess Alia Al Hussein, is entitled ‘Royal Heritage:the story of Jordan’s Arab Horses’ (available from medinapublishing.com). Other titles include ‘Out of the Desert’, ‘The Arab Horse’ and ‘Drinkers of the Wind’. Upton writes regularly for international magazines, he gives lectures and has been involved in films on the Arab horse. Peter’s talents as an artist command enormous respect among collectors. He has held regular one-man exhibitions at the Mathaf Gallery and his paintings, including many special commissions, are in private collections around the world. 2.
