The Symptoms of Gestational Diabetes

The Symptoms of Gestational Diabetes What are the symptoms of Gestational Diabetes? According to doctors at the Mayo Clinic and other doctors from all over the world, there are no real signs of gestational diabetes that are much different than regular pregnancy discomforts. Rather than looking for symptoms of gestational diabetes, doctors and midwives routinely check their patients for this disorder. They check for it using a glucose test sometime between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy. However, if they feel that the woman has an increased risk of gestational diabetes, they may test her as early as the 13th week of pregnancy. The test is a fairly straightforward procedure in which the woman drinks a sweet solution containing 50g of glucose. After drinking it, she will provide a blood sample to the doctor. They will analyze the sample to determine the effect of the glucose on her blood sugar levels. If the results indicate that the woman has abnormal blood sugar levels, the doctors will advise her that she is showing one of the signs of gestational diabetes, namely high blood sugar. Then, they may require her to take an additional test. The additional test will involve the patient fasting for several hours prior to drinking the syrup. The mother would then have blood drawn at different intervals of time to help the doctor understand how she is processing glucose in her body. If the results of the second test show abnormal blood sugar levels, the doctors will diagnose her with gestational diabetes. They will immediately start to prescribe a course of action to help control her symptoms of gestational diabetes.
