Out of this commitment to studentcentered education comes the formation of the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Grad at Grad,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; those tenets that are embodied by Seattle Prep students at graduation.

One of the things I appreciate most about Seattle Prep’s focus on the Grad at

Prep students, even before it was an explicit part of our mission statement. Early Panthers learned Greek and Latin, participated in Sodality and service clubs, competed in athletics and formed strong bonds evident today at our annual Alumni Reunion Weekend and Young Alumni gathering. Spending time in the presence of our incredible alumni underscores the universality of the Grad at Grad, whether they graduated from Seattle Prep in 1952 or 2002. Today, our students engage in formation daily through the things that they do. As I look through these pages, I am amazed by the diverse activities offered at this special place and I hope you’ll take a moment to enjoy seeing the many ways in which today’s students are formed into individuals who are intellectually competent, spiritually alive, open to growth, loving and committed to doing justice. Thirty-five years ago influential Ignatian educators from around the country gathered together to talk about the purpose of Jesuit education. Their most significant accomplishment was a statement that has transformed Jesuit schools, The Profile of the Graduate at Graduation (Grad at Grad). All of the Jesuit high schools in the United States adhere to the five characteristics of the Grad at Grad. At Seattle Prep, the five characteristics are folded into our Mission Statement, shown above. What is surprising about these five characteristics is that only one relates explicitly to academics, the hallmark of Jesuit education for centuries. The Grad

Jesus and the life of St. Ignatius himself. Yes, the early Jesuits were committed (AMDG) and others (“helping souls”). The five characteristics, when taken together, are intended to help form a fully human human. They stretch us into living for God and neighbor, rather than self. The Grad at Grad is counter-cultural in this respect. Our society is built on me. The Grad at Grad is grounded in something different, the Ignatian maxim, “Be more so that you can do more.” And that “do more” is not for self. The Grad at Grad re-appropriates our past and, in doing so, gives life to our present. You, our generous supporters, also honor our past and give life to our present. Without you there is no Grad at Grad, there is no Seattle Prep. We want to be more so that we can do more. Your support bridges this desire with the resources needed to act upon it. Intellectually Competent The Collegio model of combining disciplines, AP programs and window classes intertwine to form a curriculum that is rigorous, thoughtful and engaging. Students develop an array of academic skills that transcend disciplines and go beyond requirements for college entrance. They exhibit intellectual integrity in their personal quest for religious truth, knowledge, and in their response to issues of social justice.

Seattle Prep students understand the major doctrines and practices of the Catholic Church, and further, they have examined their own religious feelings and beliefs in order to choose a fundamental orientation toward God. They have established a relationship with their religious tradition and community that provides the foundation for lives of discernment and faith.

“When the students share their experience and wisdom with their classmates and underclassmen at various student-led retreats, it makes the school a safe place to consider any and all of the questions – not the least of which is, ‘Am I a beloved of God?’ When our students listen and care for each other during these experiences, it is there that many begin to realize on a more mature and deeper spiritual level that that answer is, ’Yes!’ It is there that they become still more ‘Spiritually Alive!’”

ENDOWMENT Increasing our endowment continues to be a key priority for us now and into the future. In the 2012/2013 academic year we awarded more than $1.2 million in tuition assistance to students who would otherwise not be able to attend Seattle Prep. This is a core part of our mission; to be accessible to all qualified students who desire a Jesuit education. A strong endowment is a key component of this mission. The investment strategy for our endowments generated a return of 10.5% for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013, of which 4.75% was then allocated to our tuition assistance efforts. With the need for tuition assistance rising each year, we can no longer rely solely on the income from the Annual Fund to support this need. We must continue to raise funds each year to grow our total endowment. We are happy to report that this year more than 245 individuals made gifts totaling $414,147.00 towards endowment.
