here is a Yiddish proverb that says “Man plans, God laughs.” I think this proverb speaks to the divine nature of faith and the need to trust in God. As we ended the 2010-2011 school year, Archbishop Murphy High School was dealing with a difficult enrollment situation. There were many questions, not the least of which was “where do we go from here?”
We find the answer in Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…” As I write this letter, I find a school that has made incredible strides during the past year and undergone some major transitions. While change is difficult, I have found that as we placed our trust in God and all of the gifts and talents He has blessed us with, we have met with great success. On June 1 we celebrated graduation for 142 seniors, 100 percent of the senior class. The Class of 2012 was awarded approximately $14 million in scholarship offers, and students from this class are attending prestigious schools like Notre Dame, Stanford, Harvard, Gonzaga, and a host of other amazing schools. It is time to turn these Christlike leaders out into the world, so they can take God’s grace and make our world better. In the field of athletics, we had a state championship baseball team. Track athlete Mark Schireman placed first in the state in the javelin. In co-curricular activities our Hi-Q team took first in the state and fourth in the nation. We had artists and musicians place in state competitions as well. Perhaps what I am most proud of is the winning of the 2A State Scholastic Cup. This award is given to the school whose student-athletes have performed at the highest level athletically, academically, and in sportsmanship. And I would be remiss if I did not mention that our students have completed approximately 15,000 hours of Christian service this year. I could not be more proud. So, where do we go from here? As we head into a new school year we have some exciting things to note. Our incoming freshmen class is full with more than 155 students. We are now accepting students on a waiting list for this class. We have welcomed home a familiar face, Steve Schmutz, to serve as our academic principal. There is an energy and excitement in the air at Archbishop Murphy, and for us the sky is the limit. In all of the excitement we cannot lose track of what has brought us here: faith. We must continue to trust in God and the gifts and talents he has blessed us with. Moreover, we must have the courage to share those gifts, talents, faith, and all of the great things happening at Archbishop Murphy with everyone we can. Thank you for your continued support and faith in Archbishop Murphy High School. This school is a special place because of all the love, energy, and support of the people who call it home. May this next year be a blessed time for you, your family, and for Archbishop Murphy High School. In Christ, Matthew J. Schambari President

elcome to the AMHS annual report. Look different? After years of keeping you up to date on the previous school year’s happenings and financial stats, we wanted to take this opportunity to give you a closer look at the people connected to Archbishop Murphy High School. Whether you’re an alum, parent of a graduate, a staff member, donor or friend, you’re a member of the AMHS family. So, think of this publication as a family reunion on paper. No airfare. No awkward hugs. No struggle to remember names. Just a chance to reconnect with family, hear a few good stories and celebrate some successes. In addition to financial data and a big thank you to our generous supporters, you’ll also find a themed feature section (“Where do we go from here?”) nudging all of us to reflect for a moment on not only what is ahead for AMHS, but what is ahead for us personally. And you won’t want to miss the in-depth alumni section (Wildcats Whereabouts) compiled by our new alumni director Jen (Richardson) Bowman ’00. Finally, you’ll have to check out our student success stories. They’re worth cheering for all over again.
We are a blessed community. As we prepare to celebrate our 25th anniversary during the 2012-2013 school year, we recognize all God has done for us and through us, remembering always that whatever lies ahead – in Christ there is joy and hope. Best, Rebecca Hover Director of Communications

Campus Ministry
RECOGNIZING GOD’S CONSTANT PRESENCE
I
f you’ve ever listened to a homily or presentation by our campus chaplain, Fr. Armando Guzman, chances are you’ve heard him ask what the most important thing in the world is. “Your soul,” he says every time. At Archbishop Murphy High School we strive to inspire and develop Christlike leaders for the transformation of the world. Not a small undertaking! As our students excel in academics, athletics and many other extra-curricular activities, our focus in campus ministry is that every student would have an authentic experience of Christ’s presence in the midst of all they are involved in here at AMHS. This past year we witnessed our director of campus ministry, Matt Schambari, transition to vice president and finally president in May. A short time later we welcomed Casey Ross as our new director of campus ministry. Casey comes to us from Immaculate Conception-Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Everett where he served as director of youth ministry for five years. He has more than 15 years experience in youth ministry.
2
Casey shares our vision that all students have the opportunity to fully live as the person they were created to be and to recognize God’s presence in our midst. That vision is fostered not only through daily life on campus and precious community service opportunities, but through our many spiritual retreats. As our school continues to transition and grow, our efforts in campus ministry will continue to point students, faculty and parents alike to the presence of God in our midst. Our celebration of faith is not limited to our chapel and celebration of liturgies. As a campus ministry, we strive to help our students and faculty see and make known the presence of God in our classrooms, in the bleachers, in our cafeteria and in our locker rooms. Students, teachers, presidents and even campus ministers will come and go, but the soul of our school will remain the same. We will continue to encourage our students to embrace the reality, not only of who God is to them, but who they are to God.

Choose Your Own Adventure Anyone who was a child of the 1980s or early 1990s (or the parent of one) probably remembers it: the Choose Your Own Adventure book series. “You’re the star of the story!” book covers promised eager readers. Whether you were trying to escape a haunted mansion or recover lost treasure, every few pages the story came to a pause and you were faced with two or three options. Depending on your choice, you turned to a specific page and continued the story. Once you finished the book you could go back and read it all over again, making a fresh set of plot choices each time. Forty different endings were possible. It was the ultimate do-over for a kid; the closest you could get to a time machine. Life can be like a choose-your-own-adventure book. Every so often we’re faced with a situation and a set of choices. Unlike the popular book series, we can’t go back and do it all over again. In this section, we feature recently retired and beloved teacher Jim Leonard. After nearly 25 years at AMHS Mr. Leonard is preparing to choose his next adventure. We also pause to thank two people instrumental in shaping AMHS in its first 25 years: President emeritus Dr. Robert Graby and former principal Fran Ennis. Without their influence, we wouldn’t be in the position we’re in today to shape the next 25 years of our school. Finally, we’ve asked six of our community members to reflect on their life choices. How do they choose their own life adventures? What, or who, guides them, and what would they change if they got a do-over? Perhaps you’ll want to ask yourself the same questions we asked them. Take it a step further and spend some time in prayer asking God,

ANOTHER FINE MESS
By Matt Wright, AMHS English Department Chair
Retirement
F
ew sights at AMHS are as familiar as Jim Leonard’s desk. Piles of papers, books, pictures, articles, thank you cards, and random objects litter its surface.
For 23 summers, Jim has resolved to have “files, not piles” on this desk, yet by the end of September the familiar piles steal back in and overwhelm, not just the desk, but the whole room. They are evidence of Jim’s dedication to his students. They are some of what is left in the wake of much work and energy spent on his students - ideas sifted through, pored over and scrutinized with the aim of helping people learn to think critically. At the end of the school year, Jim would chuckle as he looked at the shambles of a successful year, strike an Oliver Hardy pose and declare, “Well, here’s another fine mess ...”
At this point, though, he will probably be content just “kicking back.” Jim’s abiding interest in politics, justice, economics, and storytelling ensures that he will always have a book in hand and a conversation at hand. One of the difficulties of teaching history and English for so long is that one is left with little time for out-of-school reading. Jim relishes the chance to read more books and embrace the contemplative life. At his AMHS farewell reception, several of Mr. Leonard’s former students commented how his curiosity for ideas and love of good writing inspired them to read more and write better.
This fall, the piles were strangely absent as Jim began a well-deserved retirement. After a distinguished career at AMHS, where he served as teacher, department chair, viceprincipal, and even interim principal, Jim will spend more time attending to the rewards of a scholarly, full life. As Jim says, he wants to be “more spectator than actor” now and spend time with his wife, Marcia, his children, and his granddaughters, Vivian and Frances, who affectionately and ironically call him “Grumpy” (because he is, of course, the less grumpy of the granddads).
Another pastime that Jim’s retirement will afford him is the chance to attend the theater and concerts more often. A great lover of drama and music, Jim sparked this interest in many AMHS students. In addition to seeing almost every AMHS production, he usually found at least one occasion per year to take groups of students to various professional theaters in Seattle. He credits his love of theater to a favorite professor who took his classes to plays and taught students how to understand and enjoy live storytelling. Jim often infused his lessons in American history and literature with a sense of the influence of jazz and blues music. His knowledge of music, literature, art, and history make him an extraordinary intellect, but he also possesses a unique ability to show students how the humanities and arts enrich the world.
When he isn’t traveling to see his kids and grandkids, you’ll probably find him out on the peninsula in Sequim, at his home away from home. We hope to see him at upcoming AMHS events, especially soccer games, where he has been a sidelines mainstay for years.
The chief virtues that characterized Jim Leonard’s career at AMHS are passion for powerful ideas and love for people. He helped create better lives, more effective programs, and a stronger school, and his good work will undoubtedly continue in new ways.
However, it may be difficult for Jim to stay completely out of the world of academia. After having developed the Matteo Ricci program at AMHS along with Mary Anne Callaghan, Jim’s services are highly sought after. The Matteo Ricci College would love to have Jim as a consultant as they expand their program to more economically diverse schools.
Though we’ll all miss the familiar piles, the effects of Jim’s teaching and the memory of his character will last for a long time, even as he moves on to another fine mess.

Moving On Retirement
Dr. Graby is a firm believer that we are called
to our vocations in life by the Holy Spirit. So he was paying attention a year-and-a-half ago when he started sensing it might be time to move on. After 45 years in education, Dr. Graby recently retired as AMHS’s president and is now working part time as a consultant for Optimus Fund Raising, showing schools like AMHS how to organize and conduct capital campaigns. He began his career in 1967 teaching English at a public high school in San Jose, Calif. He made the transition to Catholic schools in 1978 when he accepted a teaching and administrative position at a school in San Francisco. That was followed by a stint in administration at the University of San Francisco before coming to Seattle in 1996 to work at Seattle Preparatory School. He joined the AMHS team in 2008. “Archbishop Murphy High School is an extraordinary educational apostolate that has come a long distance in its first 25 years,” Dr. Graby said. “(AMHS) has both the potential and opportunity to make a difference in the lives of thousands of young people by providing them what they need to become Christlike leaders.”
Fran Ennis came to AMHS shortly after her
husband, AMHS football coach and athletic director Terry Ennis, died in September 2007. She served as a member of the AMHS board of trustees for several years before stepping into the role of interim principal in the fall of 2009. Later that year, she was selected to be the AMHS principal. At an all-staff celebration this past June, renowned local artist Michael Regan presented her with a sketch of her husband. Regan, known for his sketches of fallen war heroes, noted how Terry Ennis was one of AMHS’s “fallen heroes” and how Fran Ennis stepped in as principal exactly when our school community needed her. Fran Ennis’ teaching career began in 1974 at Annie Wright School in Tacoma and continued at Bellarmine Preparatory School. She became an administrator after 13 years of teaching English and served as vice principal at Lake Stevens High School and later principal at North Lake Middle School in Lake Stevens. We will always remember her for being one our heroes and an ever-present figure at practically every school event. We wish her well as she prepares to spend more time with her children and grandchildren in Washington and Arizona.
We thank Dr. Graby for his contribution to our first 25 years and for helping us prepare for the next 25 years.

Where Do We Go From Here? A conversation
Do you ever get the feeling your life is sometimes like the street sign on the cover of this magazine? So many options, no clear direction? Maybe you took a look at the cover and zoomed right in on one sign. No question about it, you know where you’re going. How did we get to this point in life? Was it a series of choices, both large and small? A matter of circumstances beyond our control? A muddled combination of the two? Take some time to get to know the six members of our family in this article as they share with us how they ended up where they are today and where they see themselves … down the road.
Jacob Thompson ’01 is married to his high school sweetheart Katie (Reed ’01). They currently live in the Mill Creek area with their 3-year-old son Austin and a brand new baby daughter. Jacob graduated from Colorado State University in 2005 with a Bachelors of Science in business administration with a concentration in management and an entrepreneurship certificate. Jacob co-owns Home Run Solutions LLC with fellow alum Joe Reed ’98 - an all phase general contracting company specializing in residential renovations. ARCHBISHOP MURPHY HIGH SCHOOL
Looking back on your life, are you where you thought you’d be at this stage? Jacob Thompson: No, not at all and yes 100 percent – all at the same time. In general, I always knew I wanted to own my own business and start a family with my high school sweetheart. Beyond that you could have asked me where I saw myself in five years at various points throughout the last 15 years and I would have given you 10 to 15 different variations of where I wanted to be living and in what field I wanted to work. Mikki Williams: Never in a million years did I think I would be where I am today. I grew up in poverty my entire childhood, so marrying my soul mate and bringing two wonderful daughters into the world and being in a prominent position within my company is more than I had ever imagined. Tom Lane: I am basically where I thought I would be, but the path taken had more twists and turns than I imagined. I married my high-school sweetheart, am running the family business that I intended to, and have the large family (five children) that we always wanted. Blessed. Jen Bowman: Thirty is a big milestone for a lot of people. At thirty, most people want to have a significant other, kids, a house, a rewarding career, and a passport full of stamps to exotic places. I feel fortunate to say by 30 I have worked really hard in my real estate career through a tough market, traveled the globe, and have learned to give more of myself, time, and resources. Annie Dang: Looking back at my life, I am farther along than I ever imagined I would be. Since I was young I’ve had lofty aspirations. My Catholic school education at St. Mary Magdalen in Everett taught me to dream big. However, I think going to Archbishop Murphy was an excellent choice for me. It taught me more than just academic prowess, but

life skills I can carry on into college and the future. The sense of unity and the comfort I found in the faculty and students at AMHS propelled me to push myself, and it really helped me get to where I am now.
Are you a planner or do you let life happen? How well has your approach to life worked for you?
Hope Pettinger: I am in a state of constant gratefulness that I am blessed to be where I am today. My family is safe and healthy. My marriage is strong and loving, and I am able to pursue my interests. I am 53 years old and have the good health, time and resources to decide what I want to do. Being free to volunteer, travel and enjoy my family is the greatest gift.
Annie Dang: I guess I would have to say I am half-planner, half-haphazard-carefree. In terms of academics and my future career, I like to have things mapped out, giving myself goals to work for. In terms of friends and family, however, I just let things go with the flow, allowing each person in my circle the freedom to express themselves and live life to the fullest, by enjoying its inevitable randomness and unexpected joys.
Hope Pettinger (parent of Nick ’05 and Samantha ’10) was born in Anchorage, Alaska and graduated from the University of Denver. She has been a marketing director for large restaurant chains, including The Keg and Applebee’s. She is a longtime volunteer at AMHS as well as The American Cancer Society. Hope and her husband Brad celebrated their 30th anniversary in March.
Mikki Williams (parent of Ciara ’16 and Madison ’17) was born in South Korea and immigrated with her family to the United States in 1972 at the age of six. She is the marine vice president of the northwest region of a global insurance company in Seattle. She and her husband Anthony – a project manager on the 787 program at Boeing – live with their daughters in Mill Creek.

Hope Pettinger: I have usually let life happen. I try to learn from each experience and apply it to whatever comes next in life. By looking at life with the belief that everything happens for a reason I have enjoyed a great journey so far. Jacob Thompson: I used to be a strict planner, but after a while it seems that life can throw you many curves. If you are trying to stick to a strict plan you run the risk of becoming very frustrated and letting life slip by you and not fully enjoying every moment it has to offer. Nowadays, I try to apply a general framework of a plan and sit back and enjoy the rollercoaster of life. Jen Bowman: I’m a planner, but I have never put deadlines on events that are outside of my control. I think you need to work hard and be focused on your life goals, but you need to accept the fact that things don’t always go according to plan and you’ll need a Plan B just in case. I have found that just because you want something doesn’t mean you’ll be happy or fulfilled once you get it. Mikki Williams: I am a planner to a fault. I truly am a believer of the quote “you are in control of your own destiny.” Through planning, whether short term or long term, you map out your own destiny and, dependent upon your follow-through or the inability thereof, you either succeed or fail. Planning has proven to be extremely effective for me in life. But when I said that I was a planner to a fault, I meant it. I planned my way through my 20s, 30s and well into my 40s. It is through the persistence of my husband and now teenage daughters, that I ANNUAL REPORT 2011/2012

am letting life happen more freely. I am now just beginning to be more spontaneous with a glimmer of an adventure seeker somewhere in there. Tom Lane: I would call myself a planner, but part of my planning considers that many things in life I cannot control. I strive to allow flexibility in the mechanics of how I achieve a goal, but achieve it regardless. I believe it has worked out well for me.
What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve ever faced and how did you handle it? Hope Pettinger: My biggest challenge is managing the fear I have for my family’s well being. I never realized that having children would put me in a state of constant worry. Someone said to me, “You are only as happy as your saddest child.” I know for me that is true. My challenge is reminding myself that today my children are OK and that if something goes wrong that God and my family will help me cope. Tom Lane: Navigating our family-owned business through the recent economic downturn. It tested my leadership abilities and our family’s resolve. We handled it by making some painful decisions early in the crisis, which enabled a path out of it. Jacob Thompson: The biggest challenge I have faced is one that I have faced multiple times, and that is accepting when my plan needs to be altered and a new direction explored. It isn’t easy to admit that the path you are on and have been putting all your time and effort into isn’t the best path for you. I have found the best way to handle this type of situation is to rely on the advice and wisdom of a few close friends/mentors that truly know who you are and what you are capable of and have no problem telling you the truth even when it’s not what you want to hear. Mikki Williams: One of the biggest challenges I faced was becoming the vice president of the west region of my company after being peers with many of my current employees over the

past 10 years. Making enemies was easier than winning over the team, but I had a job to perform with the best interests of the company, and the employees who cared to be there then and now, in mind. Over a period of two years, I brought in a new management team and had to make some tough decisions and deliver some tough messages. I have a big heart and that usually isn’t the best ingredient for a successful businesswoman in the male-dominant industry of my business. After a while, I realized change creates opportunity. This is all easily said now, but at the time it really was one of the greatest challenges I had ever faced. Jen Bowman: Being a 100-percent-commission real estate agent in a tough housing market was a challenge. I was fresh out of college when I got my real estate license so I relied on my network of friends and families I knew from high school – Archbishop Murphy is a fabulous community and it helped me get my business started. Keeping focused on the basics of business got me through one of the toughest times I might ever see in my career. Annie Dang: One of the biggest challenges in my life was the college application process. As a senior, I found it hard to focus on my studies, activities, and at the same time do the numerous applications and supplements. What got me through it was imagining how great it would feel if I was accepted to the school of my dreams. This daydreaming, although distracting, forced me to put my best effort into writing essays and responses that demonstrated my natural curiosity and love of learning.

I began my career only two days after college graduation. I should have traveled … maybe to Australia to run a hot-dog stand … should I consider that in retirement?
If you could go back and make one life decision all over again, what would it be and why? Tom Lane: I began my career only two days after college graduation. I should have traveled … maybe to Australia to run a hot-dog stand … should I consider that in retirement? Jen Bowman: I try to live and learn and not hold on to regrets. Mikki Williams: I would have traveled and lived in Europe. Having traveled to London and Germany with my company in the last 10 years, and now having the ability to send some of my own employees abroad for a short/long term assignment, I find myself looking back and wishing I was young again and able to experience these opportunities. Jacob Thompson: I am a big believer in the concept that you are the sum of all your experiences and that every decision helps to shape who you are. With that being said, I wish I could go back and come to the realization sooner that life is too short to stress over the small things and that the best thing you can do sometimes is to just sit back and live in the moment. Annie Dang: If I could go back, I would probably have tried a different sport. Although I love running, I have always wondered what it would be like to be on a closer-knit sports team, such as soccer or tennis. Murphy offered so many activities, I couldn’t do them all even though I wanted to. Hope Pettinger: If I could change one life decision I would not have worked while my child was very young. I would have kept him out of school for an extra year to give him a chance to mature and I would have been more hands on in his early childhood education. I would not have left the teaching to the teachers. I thought the school system would serve my children as well as it served me and I was wrong. But, the best decision I made was moving my child out of public school and into AMHS. Better late than never!

Share some of the best advice you’ve ever received or a favorite quote on how to handle changes/challenges in life. Annie Dang: The best advice I ever received was from my Mock Trial coach and AP Government and Politics teacher Roger Brodniak. He always taught me to keep an “even keel.” My life is extremely hectic, and he understood that. Whether it was in mock trials, tests, or performances, any time I was nervous, I just stopped to breathe and keep an even keel. Hope Pettinger: My favorite quote and the one I try to live by is, “The present is the gift.” By living in this realization every day I find that life is richer. Jen Bowman: “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.” - Tony Robbins. My dad always had Tony Robbins’ motivation tapes when I was a kid and his messages always hit home for me.
Jen (Richardson) Bowman ’00 is Archbishop Murphy High School’s new alumni director after serving on our board of trustees. She is responsible for building and growing our alumni association in her new part-time role. Jen is also a real estate broker with Windermere Real Estate, and a director with her local REALTOR chapter and chairwoman for its Young Professionals Network. Jen enjoys traveling abroad. She and her husband Andrew live in Lynnwood with their miniAustralian Shepherd, Fletcher.
ANNUAL REPORT 2011/2012
A mentor told me that no matter what you’re doing use the experience to the fullest to learn and grow.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Annie Dang ’12 is attending Harvard College this fall after being accepted to every Ivy League institution to which she applied. She plans to study government and social studies then work as a paralegal before returning to school to earn her juris doctorate. She earned numerous awards and honors during her four years at AMHS, including the Holy Cross Award her senior year.
Jen Bowman: In five years, I’d like to give my parents the gift of grandchildren and maintain a good work life-balance. As a person who says yes to everything that’s always a challenge. Guess that means anything could come my way! Annie Dang: In five years, I hopefully will have graduated from Harvard College with a Bachelor’s in government and social studies. I will work as a paralegal for a few years before returning to school to earn my J.D. My experience with Mock Trial and AP classes at AMHS has influenced me to pursue law as a career, and with God always watching over me, I hope that dream will come to fruition. Mikki Williams: I see myself retired; there goes the planner in me.
Tom Lane: My grandfather told me when I was a young man that “whomever works the hardest keeps their job the longest.” He came from an era that weathered the Great Depression. I have a better understanding of what he was referring to after the recent economic crisis.
Jacob Thompson: In five years, I hope to be building our dream home, have another kid on the way and continuing to grow the Home Run Solutions brand in the residential general contracting arena as well as making investment real estate a larger focus of the company.
Jacob Thompson: Never stop learning and growing no matter what. Shortly after I graduated from Colorado State I was working in a job that wasn’t quiet what I had in mind. A mentor told me that no matter what you’re doing use the experience to the fullest to learn and grow. Once you have learned or grown as much as you can from a particular experience/job/ stage of life/etc, move on to the next one and do the same and eventually the sum of all your experiences will lead you to your ultimate path.
Tom Lane: I envision my wife and I doing the same things we are now – watching our five children grow up as happy, independent people. Hope Pettinger: I am not a planner, so I will enjoy the journey and see where it leads.
Mikki Williams: The best advice I ever received from a mentor was never be late for anything. Better to be early than on time. We all go through life thinking that being on time is good enough. I believe that trying to be on time rather than being early is similar to accepting mediocrity over greatness. This mantra has worked well for me in my career and with my personal life. I hope to pass on this important life lesson to my children. ARCHBISHOP MURPHY HIGH SCHOOL
