I N S I D E TH E C AM PAI G N We are pleased to offer this brief glimpse into the progress of Building Our Future: The Campaign for Seattle Prep. Great strides have been made since our last newsletter and we are excited to report that more than $9 million has been raised! You will see just a few donor profiles of those who have generously stepped forward with their support. Their stories and commitment serve as an inspiration to us as we continue our outreach with enthusiasm and energy. In September, we had the opportunity to present the campaign in detail to our current parents at the Back to School Curriculum nights. More than 90% of parents attended, and the response that we’ve received has been wonderful. Our current parents understand the need and stand ready to participate in the success. Our Campaign Steering Committee members are actively reaching out to all current parents to ask for their participation.

On the construction and financing fronts, we anticipate having the financing details confirmed with a lender within the next few weeks. The Board of Trustees has been planning for this for some time and we feel confident that debt repayment can be managed within our current operating budget and will not require a facility fee or large increases in tuition. Construction costs continue to remain low and we have been assured by our contractor that they will hold these prices through 2013. As you can see, the remaining factor is the fundraising. We believe that we will be in a position to break ground in June 2013, due to the support of all of our donors to date and those who will step forward as we build the future of Seattle Prep. Thank you for your support of this important effort.

K AREN ANDERSEN ‘79 & M I K E M AT T H E WS ‘ 7 9 Karen and Mike met at Seattle Prep and now their two children, TJ a sophomore and Lauren, a senior attend Seattle Prep. Karen is a member of the campaign committee as well as the Board of Trustees. When asked to give to the campaign, the couple easily agreed that they would participate. The question was, how much? “We knew what we could give over a four year horizon and then we pushed ourselves to stretch that gift.” Karen said, “I went to Prep on financial aid and I feel strongly that others should have the same opportunity that was provided for me.” The notion of paying it forward for future generations is important to both Karen and Mike. Mike was on the Prep basketball team and he tells the story that at the time home games were played at Blanchet due to the size of the Prep facilities. Soon after, Prep supporters came together and contributed funds to build what is now the McHugh Gymnasium, where their kids play basketball and volleyball in today.

Karen and Mike agree that this campaign is critical for the future of Prep. The seismic issues that face Adelphia Hall must be addressed in order for Prep to continue to provide the strong Jesuit education that makes Prep special. We must pay it forward to ensure this continues.

With more than 90 students enrolled, the Learning Resource Center provides educational services that allow students to discover more about their own learning style and provides them the tools to empower their own success. Building Our Future: The Campaign for Seattle Prep will allow for a newly renovated and equipped Learning Resource Center. This new space, located in McDonnell Hall, is designed with considerable input from LRC Director Regina central to the design. Included will be an expanded space for extended testing, two conference rooms for individual tutoring and/or parent meetings and increased space for study hall.

T WI N I N G FAM I LY MAK E S LE AD E RS H I P G I F T We are pleased to announce a leadership gift from the Twining family to Building Our Future: The Campaign for Seattle Prep. Dan and Theresa, and their children Jimmy ’01, Anne Marie ’03, Jeff ’05 and Paul ’08, are something of a Prep institution. Mention the Twinings to a faculty or staff member and you are bound to hear, “Oh, they are the NICEST family!” Since their oldest began at Prep in the 90s, the Twinings have fully participated in all facets of community life. Dan and Theresa have served as committee chairs, as volunteers for the SPREE Auction, on the Parent Board and have responded with an enthusiastic “yes!” each of the many times we have called on them for their support. When asked what makes a Prep education different from most high schools, Jeff ’05 was quick to note that “It wasn’t just the curriculum that was challenging, but I felt like the teachers wanted me and my fellow classmates to succeed. They were more than willing to work with us when we needed additional assistance.” Brother Jimmy echoes his sentiment: “It was definitely a great education coupled with a sense of community that spans generations. I have great friends from my time at Prep, and my parents have great friends from the parent communities of each of our classes (’01-’08).” When asked about making Prep a philanthropic priority and why they are giving to Building Our Future: The Campaign for Seattle Prep, Dan and Theresa point out the importance of “paying it forward” and enabling future Prep students to benefit from the same educational opportunities their kids have enjoyed. Theresa notes how important it is that “Prep continues to provide a facility that equals its education,” when discussing the building project in particular. A testament to a truly multi-generational commitment to Prep, Theresa’s parents Mary Ann and Dick Boulanger ’47 have also made a contribution to the family gift. Dick says, “Our ability to support Prep helps to ensure the school will be able to support future generations – maybe my great grandchildren someday!”
