ARCHITECTURAL PORTFOLIO Selected Academic works/research of Mathew Rowland
MATHEW KEVIN ROWLAND BACHELOR OF ARCHITECTURAL STUDIES
I seek to further my skills within the umbrella of spatial design though mixed media developments. To achieve this I am looking for work on creative projects that will challenge my thinking and possibly redefine what architecture means as either a building or a representation of a building. Furthermore I wish for my work to be as inspirational to others as previous media has been to me.

ARCI 591 - COLD WAR BLUES
COASTAL RESTORATION OF SHIKOV BEACH IN A POST-OIL WORLD
This project is an exploration of the visual language of machinery and what can be taken from it to create interesting architecture. It deals with themes of sustainability and pollution to do with Oil infrastructure in an attempt to provide a solution to this dependency on a finite resource. The building is designed to be a shore front and water clean up facility which has housing for the workers involved in this operation.

This project is to act as the successor to and oil rig and plays an active part in repairing the site through in built filtration technology. The form and modular design are the result of developments that were made in tandem with the research. Key authors for this thesis are Wes Jones, Bryan Cantley and Neil Spiller.

ARCI 412 - CIVIC SPONGE PARASITIC PUBLIC ART GALLERY
This project was developed using digital techniques with the help of the program Rhinoceros 5 and its plug in, Grasshopper. The building was ‘grown’ using a code that worked within the specific parameters provided. The design was then detailed further by thinking about structural requirements as well as specific construction elements.

Part of the brief for this assignment was to realise the design through architectural detailing along with solutions to lateral resistance for the structure. This was overcome through triangulation in a pre fabricated flooring system which was modular. On longer spans it was supported by trusses.

ARCI 411- MECHANIZED HOUSE 4 TENANT ADAPTABLE DESIGN
This project was based around the concept that different personalities have different requirements for space and often this leads to conflicts amongst flatmates or other group of people living in a space. The idea was to create a space that was scheduled to move around the users at different times to appeal to different people at different times.

ARCI 311- FERRY TERMINAL SITE RESPONSIVE FERRY TERMINAL DESIGN
This project was intended to be a unique welcome to Wellington to any ships coming into the harbour. The building was designed with a loose programme and instead serves as an extension of the waterfront moorings. Another element of the design was the incorporation of moving parts. The roof structure is responsive based of the motion of the waves.

SARC 221 - BATCH DESIGN
DETAILED DESIGN FOR A BASIC COAST FRONT BATCH
This design is somewhat basic however this assignment focused on the details of a building design based on NZS 3604. It was a very important learning experience having not done any work of this type before.

211 - HOUSING VILLAGE VARYING TYPOLOGY VILLAGE DESIGN
This project was the development of a new subdivision in Wellington that was developed as a cultural response to site through Maori design ideas. Although its development in this regard is somewhat weak it still presents a interesting solution to a subdivision.
