Pratidhi

Around this time, once they start losing daylight, the last of the workers return back. This time, right after work when they are most tired, is when they garner most rest.

It is in small spaces enclosed all around with steel sheets that the construction workers find abode after a day of intense labour. Pushed to a corner of the site which awaits landscaping in the future, the settlement abuts the two areas of construction on the site making them safe and free from hazards. Bordering the site boundary, the workers live in 5-6 spaces composed of steel sheets for walls and a roof and a concrete base which acts as the floor.

8 AM

Unfortunately, these settlements provided by the company are less than adequate shelters as they are permanently leaking and letting in the torrents of rain that are common in Vizhinjam.

5:30 AM  1 PM  After their morning tea break, their next break begins 2.5 hours later at 1 for lunch. This is when their work hours start and they begin working.

THE SETTLEMENT

5 AM  10 AM  6 PM  6:30 PM The workers wake up around this time to prepare their meals for the day and to go for work. After their morning ablutions, they prepare food together for breakfast and lunch.

At 10, they have their tea break till 10.30 which serves to function as a small reprieve in between strenuous work.

PM  7:30 PM  9 PM  10 PM  5 PM  At 9, they sit together and eat, finally finding time for interaction amongst themselves as Mostwell.go to sleep at 10, although some choose to contact their families at this time or watch movies, listen to music etc. Working hours for the day cease at 5 and they return to their cabins but some decide to continue working overtime for which they are paid extra wages. After rest and a bath, they cook dinner, dividing the work amongst themselves. Place the adjustable base plate and then the scaffolding at an interval of 3mx3m at the 4 corners as shown. Additionally, place 2 more scaffolding at a distance of 1.3m from one side of the square formed.

Place the wooden rafters on the top plate of the scaffolding to form the roof work.

Place the L-shaped floor frame and join it to the scaffolding using a cup and lock as shown in the figure. Also place the steel flats at a distance of 1m in any one direction.

Arrange the wall panels as per unique user requirement. Join wall panels using L-shaped steel plates and screws. Next, the puff panels are placed on top of the roof framework and are fastened using nuts and bolts to the frame.

Place the marine plywood boards on the Theframe.entry steps are finally placed, complet the assembly.

As is shown, the panels can be fit according to space and site constraints and the type of panel selected is also up to user discretion.

T-shaped, L-shaped, cubical or even linear plan forms can be accomodated which is what makes Pratidhi different.

The design is totally user-dependent and can be modulated as per user requirements. The number of wall panels to be chosen are also up to the users and there is no compulsion to follow the 3m x 3m constraint, although making use of the grid system with each grid line measuring 3m is imperative.

Moreover, the panels can act as a Parasite (attached to the existing structure as an extension), could be inserted into the interior of the existing built space and can even be arranged however, around existing structures or excavated landforms which is what makes the design totally flexible.

ARANYAKAM 55 NAO

andgenerationsbeentheirhaveSincewasthefromdung,manurefor

Initially, the community gained their income from agriculture and selling the dung from their cattle herds.

Due to irregular rain patterns and COVID-19, they experienced drought, famine and floods, leading to an agricultural loss and the small profit they used to receive from selling the cow dung was incomparable. As a result, most families sold their cattle herds as it was not economically feasible.

The effort right now is to uplift the community and lift them out of their hard times while still preserving the community’s culture and tradition.

THE SOLUTION 04 Now, only 4-5 families remain who have kept their herds, in an effort to preserve their culture and tradition. Their current income is just a meagre sum of 7000/annum.Rs.

6pm - cattle is bought back to the shed before sunset, ending their activities for the day They produce 15 kg of dung everyday - of which 8 kg is produced while the cows are in the shed and not grazingbut their milk production is comparatively less with respect to other breeds. The milk produced is just enough for a single family’s need but the dung produced is a natural fertiliser, one of the best for agriculture. Moreover, this dung can also be made into a particular type of organic fertiliser, JEEVAMRUTHAM

THE PROBLEM

Since ancient times, the Kuruma Tribe have been rearing cattle and cultivating their fields - it is the tradition which has been followed for many years, through generations and defines their lifestyle and culture. Their main source of income was from selling the dung produced by the cattle and also selling the produce from their fields. In addition to selling the dung, they also used it for themselves as manure in their fields, negating the need for chemical fertilisers.

Wayanad cows are indigeneous to Wayanad in Kerala. They are comparatively smaller and fall under the endangered species category due to cross-breeding and are on the verge of extinction as well. The cattle raised by the families in the community are taken to graze in the forests everyday in the morning and only return in the evening by 6 PM. Their primary food intake consists of the forest vegetation and they are not fed anything else - there is no need for another source as the forest greens are more than sufficient for their growth.

6am - day begins 8am milking cows for household consumption 11am The cattle is taken to the nearby forest for grazing. This gives them good access to a nutritious diet.

Our proposal involves a revamped cow shed for a single family whose herd consists of 12 Wayanad cows and a full fledged attached structure for the preparation of Jeevamrutham.

What is different about Aranyakam is that the Ghana-Jeevamrutham produced will also contain a handful of the nearby forest soil which enriches it with additional nutrients.

Jeevamrutham constitutes cow dung, cow urine, jaggery and lintels in fixed quantities and can be in solid, semi-solid or liquid form. Aranyakam will make use of Ghana-Jeevamrutham (in solid form) as it has a shelf life of 6 months and is highly rich in various plant nutrients and absolutely chemical-free, keeping the microbes in the soil alive. It also improves soil quality and increases the nutrient absorption rate of plants to boost plant growth and production.
