1 Are your Color Settings set right?

2 Open image
When opening an image, always use the embedded color profile. If your image has an embedded sRGB color profile, then it is best to work in the embedded environment. Avoid unnecessary conversions.

3 Open image, if no color profile is embedded
(only applies when no color profile is embedded)
If no color profile is embedded, use the option: ‘Leave as is (don’t color manage)’
The next step is to assign a color profile to your image.
Choose the profile that suits you best. If you don’t like the result (preview option), choose another one.

4 Auto levels
A nice start is ‘Auto-Levels’. This way, you make sure there is a black and white point set in the image. Manual adjustments can be made. Beter is to use the next step: ‘Shadow/Highlight’.

5 Shadow/Highlight
Start with a small amount of ‘Shadow/Highlight’, adjust if necessary until the image is optimal.
If the color deviates from the original image, you can use the option ‘Color Correction’ in the menu ‘Shadow/Highlight’.

6 Sharpening
For best result in a newspaper environment, you need to slightly exaggerate with sharpening. Use ‘Unsharp Mask’ and play around with the ‘Amount’. ‘Threshold’ is best set to 0 or 1. Settings below are a good reference to start with.
7 Other actions
If necessary you can perfom other actions in order to optimise the image quality.

8 Convert to CMYK profile
Last step in image editing is converting the color space to CMYK; for newpapers convertion to the ISOnewspaper26v4 is needed. Use the Menu item ‘Convert to Profile’ (settings as shown below). You can play around with ‘Intent’, by switching to ‘Perceptual’ or ‘Relative Colorimetric’: in some cases perceptual is better, in other relative colorimetric is prefered. Choose the setting you like best -visually-. The option ‘Use Black Point Compensation’ is best set to active.

9 Save As Make sure you embed the Color Profile in the image-file. Save as JPG with maximum quality.
