THE WETLAND AND THE RACETRACK
Part of any design project is the semblance of seemingly unrelated program elements. Preserving the existing wetland while supporting a uniquely opposing racetrack and vehicle innovation center became the underlying challenge for this studio project. Wetlands are considered the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems, serving as home to a wide range of plant and animal life, performing a number of roles in the environment. The 287-acre site also has a rich history in the automotive racing industry as well as a number of foot, cycle and rally events...

Central to PIR’s future is its development of the already present but unrealized natural environment. Developing and restoring the wetland will dramatically increase the diversity of visitors beyond the race industry and into eco-tourism. As a result, bringing all the programmatic elements of PIR under one roof is essential to allowing the diversity of users to interact and, ultimately, learn from one another. The resulting design grants PIR the opportunity to be both an industry leader in the automotive racing industry as well as ecosystem restoration.

A self-restricting form of architecture that seeks to achieve as much as is required with as little as possible. If this self-imposed minimalism, for example the reduction in the living area, is not to be associated with a deterioration in convenience or a reduction in utility, we must inevitably arrive at a new conception of and approach to space. The self-restrictive efforts will offer potential for reorientation and enrichment and space-optimized modeling will become the driving force behind innovation. Micro-architecture could be understood as the miniaturization of architecture, the downscaling of structures, while retaining function and possibly form as well. Is micro-architecture then the reduction in size of architecture based on changes of scale and reduction in the structural volume? Or is it more like bonsai, which whilst appearing at first glance to be merely a miniature tree is in fact a metaphor. The reduction in the size of the object is associated with an increase in its sensory quality and symbolizes art and harmony between man and nature. Micro-architecture has the same potential to be more than just scaled-down conventional architecture.

Space must be defined initially in terms of its limits but at the same time it also needs to extend beyond these limits. When the volume is compressed, there is less room for the normal buffer zones. Architects must develop limiting and delimiting strategies for the transition from inside to outside that are clearly visualized not only as constructed filters but also as separations and links. This multi-dimensional complex perception of space is one of the central focuses of space optimization. Space optimization follows Mies van der Rohe’s principle of “less is more, not through a reduction to less but a reduction to the essentials. detail 1 E1

BEFORE
Design: Mathieu Deraspe Installation: Mathieu Deraspe/Rebel Construction Location: Kilauea, Hawai’i Date: 2010
E Mau Ana Ka Hula (The Hula is Perpetual) Today the local Kilauea hula halau (hula practitioners) use the space to teach and perform the traditional cultural dance of Hawaii.
Existing Residence
This realized project was initially a single concept: to restore the existing site to exemplify the unique natural environment and cultural history of the Hawaiian islands. The locally harvested lava was shaped into 18 high undulating tiers reminescent of ancient lava flows that followed the site’s topography. Over 300 native and endemic plant species were propagated throughout the 12-acre residential property.

90 percent of all consumer goods in Hawai’i are shipped in from various countries, namely mainland United States, China, Indonesia. The containers those items are shipped in have value beyond their carrying capacity. This realized project was budgeted for $20,000 as a small “temporary” structure, completely off-grid and with as small a footprint as possible to accomodate local building codes in designated agricultural zones.

The rough-hewn, hand-carved door was brought from Indonesia for the clients. It was originally meant to serve as the main door to the house but was converted to an accented portico to increase privacy and depth of field to the approach before releasing the view of the Wailapa Valley of Kaua’i’s Northshore.

LUMINAIRE DESIGN | AVID-14
LIGHT CONCEPT: Sophisticated, elegant, refined the AVID-14 confers its character upon the room where it is placed, maintaining a familiar and organic profile, suitable for environments that differ in style and taste. The combination of gentle texture of fabric shade and the clean lines combined with an organic wood form lend a softly modern, timeless feel to the AVID-14 pendant.
MATERIALS: Hand-woven, linen paper shade, Maple hardwood frame with Walnut inserts, stainless steel mounting components. MOUNTING: Suspension pendant, (4) 1/16 aircraft cable. Suspension length: 6’

Creating a performative wall that responds to a particular acoustic condition requires a relatively simple Grasshopper definition. Each individual panel responds to the distance from center stage and the specific panel’s location on the performative wall, ultimately blanketing the theater with a uniform sound quality.

ARCHITECTURAL ADVERTISEMENTS
(Inspired by the work of Bernard Tschumi 1976-77)
THERE IS NO SPACE WITHOUT EVENT.
There is no fixed relationship between architectural form and the events that take place within it.
There is also no meaningful relationship that exists between a space and the events which occur within it. The freedom of design is mobility. It is the enhanced range of capacity of the extended body/self in conjunction with an extended self awareness. Architecture that advocates recombinations of programs, space and cultural narrative asks users to critically reinvent him/herself as a subject participating in an event and space.
The role of architecture has never been to express an extant social structure, but to function as a tool for questioning that structure and revising it.
