Evolution of a regional identity brought about by new agricultural methods The Floating Gardens of Lake Salagou incites us to reflect on the new agricultural methods. One of the key themes of this reflection is the search for a balance between mankind, its needs and its environment. To day the accelerated evolution in our way of life causes us to question the changes in agricultural practice often harmful to the environment and hence to man himself. The story of this farm on the water is one of a harsh past, of manual work and of a lost regional identity following the construction of a dam. The evolution of the countryside is one of the main themes of this farm. The timing of planting and harvesting varies with the changes in water level making the sterile surface a source of life. So the question is not about privatising a zone but how to adapt to the constraints imposed by the lake. The countryside should be considered as an intricate balance between its constituent elements. The role of the architect is to be involved in the search for this balance between the needs of mankind, its development and its ecosystem.

THE AQUAPONIC FARMING Aquaponics is a new method of farming allying fish farming with hydroponics. This combination creates a virtuous circle that is self regulating. The plants positioned above the water purify it and improve the environment for the fish. The waste matter from the fish is converted into nutrients by the worms in the earth and by nitrifying bacteria. The breeding is carried out throughout the length of the central pontoon. It separates the farm from the public visitors area. The length and depth of the installation determine the type of fish farmed as well as their growth.

THE RESTAURANT The floating restaurant is positioned parallel to the beaches. It faces the water’s edge being part of the development of the site as well as being a tourist showcase thanks to the provision of local products and an exhibition and information area. The aim of this volume is to encourage discussions between the visitors and the local actors to promote a kind of coherence between the grandiose landscape and the agriculture challenges of tomorrow

THE HALL The hall, showcase of the activities, puts the sale of the local products at the centre of their regional context. Here the architecture favours the resumption of the dialogue between the different actors in the food chain, the research scientist, the farmer and the consumer. The hall is the link between the floating project and the land. Its roof echoes the horizontality of the lake and paces the movement between the different stalls. It is built of agricultural materials and strives to give them dignity.

17
MANUAL RESEARCH The work performed on this project consisted of bringing together extensive 3D modelling using either computer software or manual techniques. The identity of each of the structural beams is rooted in a wish to bring dignity to this agricultural building even if the result is, of course, an adaptation to the different constraints.

Extension of the Château of Pennautier A dialogue between an architectural heritage and its land The grandiose site of the Château de Pennautier is a major heritage site because of its architecture and landscaping. Taking this basic duality into account, the idea was to produce a scenography as a continuation of the garden of Le Nôtre but without breaking the link between the château and its land. The starting point of the process was the consideration of the impact of building a volume in this locality. The imprints made on the surface echo the works of Michael Heizer, a « Landart » artist . A fluidity of circulation serves the functional distribution around the patios which also allows a dialogue between above and below ground. The vertical light and the different objects ornamenting the space enliven the internal path. The perpetual movement of the fountains creates a virtual link between the Chateau of Pennautier and what is under it.

STROLLING ABOUT The fountain in the central patio gives at one and the same time an aquatic dimension to the Le Nôtre garden while also providing a link to what is under it. This space is the starting point for a stroll between light and half-light, vision and smell, moving and stopping. The attention should be concentrated on the artistic and culinary activities proposed in this extension. This space under the ground allows us to concentrate on our sensory experiences, thereby blocking out our vision of the château, so making this area a physical reality as well.
30
LOOKING AT LIGHT The patios are themselves projectors that enliven the path through the artistic experience. They correspond to places for the contemplation of several things. Each one is characterised by the type of materials used and the way in which they are laid out. They form a link with the neighbouring functions and the garden above. They are stopping places in this open plan surface and are truly transition chambers between the outside world and this place. Seeking a moment of peace is the way to resume a dialogue with this surface momentarily forgotten .
