HARVEY

THE MASK BOY

STO RY/ CONTEXT

Harvey is a Mask boy who just turned 10 years of age. He is mostly misunderstood because of his appearance but he does not give up on making friends and seeing the positive side of things in life. He usually gets into trouble because of his naughty, naive behavior but learns his lesson immediately. This Character brings out the topic of bullying and self-appreciation narratives. Harvey’s character traits include playfulness, affectionate and stubbornness. Mask boy also represents the traditional attributes of the Sri Lankan mask Gini Raksha, which has the purpose to make the enemies turn to friends and spread happiness among them.

17

ARLO

THE HAWKMOTH

STO RY/ CONTEXT

Arlo’s character was inspired by hawkmoths and silence of the lamb movie. He is an old retired fearless warrior, born evil and mastered his skills in martial arts. The news about the golden spider’s newborn is the beginning of this narrative, Arlo comes back from his retirement to seek revenge, from the one who destroyed his family 70 years ago. Despite his old age, his knowledge and experience make him an outstanding sinister soldier in the moth kingdom. He eats his enemies alive and regains life counts from each one of them. This character was created to deliver dark, depressing negative emotions to the viewer with the hint of an dark humor.

THE HAWKMOTH - SELECTED CHARACTER

PLASTICINE SCULPTS & TURNAROUND POSES 24

NOTES FOR DEVELOPMENT OF ARLO There are couple of development needs to be done to the plasticine Sculpture of arlo. Firstly, the shape of the wings needs to be changed to show the sharp evil personality. Secondly, i have sculpted arlo’s nose more simplified but after examining i have decided to add on the sides of the nose to give more emotions to the character. Lastly, the arm length needs to be change to fit his body proportions.

25

ARLO

THE HAWKMOTH

TURNAROUND POSES 26

NOTES FOR DEVELOPMENT OF ARLO This is the sketched version of arlo with the development done to the plasticine Sculpture. As i mentioned i made the wings sharper and clean edged. Added the side of the nose to make the character look older, additionally, helps to create a personality. Body was sketched proportionate.

TURNAROUND POSES RASTER GRAPHICS (PHOTOSHOP) 28

NOTES FOR DEVELOPMENT OF ARLO The Main Colour scheme for Arlo helps to identify him from a line up of other evil characters. The idea is to keep the colours flow throughout. Showing one deadly side and one softer side of him which the character area to build and develop on. With Photoshop, i have been able to use airbrush texture details to create depth and give life to the character.

ARLO

THE HAWKMOTH

TURNAROUND POSES VECTOR GRAPHICS (ADOBE ANIMATE)

NOTES FOR DEVELOPMENT OF ARLO First time using Adobe Animate, i was able to create simplified version of the character and able to experiment with the colour scheme. Among the colours, the purple version and the final version stood out for me. But the body armour seems to blend in to the body therefore i have decided the shown version to be the final. The unique red will help to leave a mark on our eyes with speed moves of the character in action.

FACIAL EXPRESSIONS

POS E D VI E W

NOTES FOR DEVELOPMENT OF ARLO Construct of the character had issues of connection when its been rotated therefore i managed to simplified the joints for arms and legs and extended the back of the character to have a backdrop to make it seamless. Facial expressions are important to the character because there are limited number of emotions.

REFINED SKETCHES OF THE MOTH POD - HOME

Experimenting with different perspective and lighting inside & outside of pods. This will be the area where the moth will be flying in and out, (after restoring all their enegry).

individual pods have its unique light source which illuminate and contains energy. Moths will be able to meditate inside these light sources.

Landscapes made out of stones and woods.

44

REFINED SKETCHES OF THE MOTH POD - HOME

The Landscapes including caves, underground rivers is the best atmosphere for Arlo’s home ground. The streams will be a power source running and connecting the whole area. The pods are the home base for individual moth insects. The Psychology Of Color Theory Blue: Trust, security and spirituality Colour harmony between blues to yellow

45

REFINEMENT VISUAL RESEARCH - ABANDMENT HOUSE

46

REFINEMENT VISUAL RESEARCH - ABANDMENT HOUSE Abandonment House environment is used to explain the ‘war zone’. Following the story of Arlo, his enemy is a spider, and the enemy grounds are the abandonment house. House itself has a focal point for the main character Arlo to enter into the scene. Also, the entry point will indicate as the light side and opposite will be the dark side. Research visuals taken from horror and abandonment houses with spider webs including gives the creepy vibes setting the scene as a danger zone.

47

REFINED SKETCHES OF THE ABANDMENT HOUSE

Attics are consider to be a very scary enviroment. therefore it can be used to set as the scene where the Protagonist and antagonist meet.

Low angle provides the main character to view as the more prominent opponent.

48

REFINED SKETCHES OF THE ABANDMENT HOUSE

Showing the enemy in the scene sets a mood of danger.

Two perspective view, is a the best way to show the light and darkside in one scene.

49

BLUE/ YELLOW - COLD MOOD

ORANGE/BLUE - HOT MOOD

COLOUR VARIATIONS

GREEN/RED - WILD

50

COLOUR VARIATIONS The First step is to determine a simple colour scheme to set the location. I have used the green colour scheme to associate with Nature and safety of arlos home grounds. Red toned colour scheme associated with the Energy source for this home, the red energy source and the river flows throughout the whole area space to keep the balance equal.

T H E EN VIRONM ENT The Final Environment includes the underground green canyon with a Red Light source acting as the sun to this landscape providing energy. The Red rivers also carry the energy source keeping the environment balanced. Individual pod caves are where the moths are, and it also has a connection with the energy source hence it lights up red insides. Additionally, the red crystals and light orbits provide the theme of fairytale while the character flying motion leaves the fairy dust vibes as it sets in. The view has broken into three frames, to show the depth and perspective of the environment. The Scene will tilt from bottom to the top as the character flies off from the pod cave.
