THE URBAN QUARTER
Fifth year thesis work: an exploration of the courtyard, the home, and the neighborhood. This project is located in Bajos de Mena, a neighborhood located on the outskirts of Santiago, Chile.
Bajos de Mena is currently undergoing redevelopment throughout many parts of its housing and park complexes. There is an awareness to bring public and active green spaces to the residents of this neighborhood. Redesigning the neighborhood through the use of the courtyard as an extension of the home can establish connections between humans and nature which leads to the development of urban and social infrastructure necessary for the growth of the surrounding areas. This infrastructure also develops stability, connection and ownership between residents.
The courtyard and the courtyard home used and designed as a public space can lead to the strengthening of the family unit and the community. Also incorporating biophilic design, active green spaces, and integrating cultural spaces can bring a richness of life to these spaces.
These elements all have a role in the concept of The Urban Quarter, which abandons the military/ industrial planning philosophy of social housing and instead takes on complex social networks that require the appropriate urban morphology of a network. The appropriate geometry that promotes human wellbeing is also an important

This culinary arts school and housing unit were designed to be a connection between Oronoco Bay Park and Founders Park in Alexandria, Virginia. Both buildings are situated to take full advantage of the view across the Potomac River towards Washington DC while also becoming a part of the landscape.
