CITY OF THEBES
THE ANCIENT STATIGRAPHY AS AN URBAN DESIGN TOOL This thesis concerns the city of Thebes, an ancient Greek city, that owes its genesis to its special landscape. Its historic and natural elements have been lost under the modern city, which is literally burying its own identity and impending the life of its residents. The objective of this project is the renewal of the city and its reorganization in a functional system, based on the exploitation and the reintroduction of its statigraphy including historical and natural forms. This method of “self-renewal is applied in three levels; the first one refers to the residential extension and the circulation of the entire city. The second one concerns the archaeological integration, and, finally, the third one is focused on the renewal of the ring around the citadel that constitutes the common place of all the above systems, in terms of landscape and architectural design. Throughout the process, the identity of Thebes was taken into consideration, and so the interventions were limited to the re-establishment of the historical and natural forms. Their own architectural value is able to make the city a living monument, addressed on the contemporary resident and visitor.

DIAGRAMM OF LAND USE
As far as the residential extension and the circulation of the entire city of Thebes is concerned, we proposed an expansion of the urban growth boundary, in a form of linear and radial suburbs that follow the basic transportation axis, in a way that highlights the natural landscape and the historical structures. In particular, the northern part of the city ends in the traces of the ancient external wall, creating a perimetrical route that links the northern suburbs and the suburban green aeras with the city. Starting from this point, we attempted to integrate all the green aeras, by firstly restoring the water streams that run throughout the city, and secondly, by creating transverse pedestrian streets and smaller green spaces throughout the whole city.

CITY CIRCULATION AND OPEN SPACES
The second level of intervention concerns the Theban citadel called Kadmeia. As abovementioned, we mainly intended to restore the two basic water streams that surround the citadel; nowadays these streams have been concreted and created a big empty space around the city. However, this space includes parts and traces of the inside ancient walls and gates. Introducing the idea of “self-renewal, we aimed to reorganize the contemporary city and integrate the archaeological and green spaces, using as a base the existing natural and historical forms and structures that are mostly included in the circular area as well as the citadel itself. In addition, the pedestrian streets between the ancient gates connect the citadel with the outside city offering local green spaces, and thus prioritising the pedestrians rather than the vehicles.

urban area
In the third and basic level of intervention we focused on the renewal of the ring around the citadel of Kadmeia. The ring is the most essential part of the archaeological as well as the urban green areas’ integration, and also represents the connection between the inner and outer city. The concept refers to the transverse separation of the ring in two main parts, the natural/historical and the urban/contemporary one. The boundary between these parts is the water stream that flows either underground or overground depending on the circumstances. In particular, the natural part contains the slopes, the ancient wall and the perimetrical route, while the urban part contains an urban route and also the structural components of our project that include new residential areas, a bus station and a research center.

PLANT FORMING EXAMPLE
The idea of the separation has also been applied in section; namely, the idea concerning the natural part is this of an excavation: a literal and metaphorical subsidence of the contemporary structures in order to accentuate the historical and natural ones. On the contrary, the urban part either maintains its ground at the same level, including changes only in materials, or becomes the site for the new structures. Regarding the design axis inside the ring, we tried to create a gradual transition from the orthogonal grid plan of the inner city, to the less strict plan of the outer one, by refracting the lines inside the ring.

The traces of the ancient walls indicate the place of the ancient citadel. In order to highlight them, we decided firstly to choose kourasanit as a coating material and secondly to make them visible. To do so, we put metal columns along the route of the traces, which get taller and more dense when they approach the gates(or the traces of the gates), or stay short and sparse at the rest of the route. Finally, we chose to use them also as lightning fixtures in order to illuminate the citadel during the night. Regarding the water streams, to prevent water stagnation, we designed the stream bed by forming natural meanders. For the same reason we kept the stream bed incommensurate. In order to make our proposal more conceivable, we designed a part of the ring at a larger scale. We chose the one where the water stream flows overground, where the traces of the ancient wall are inside the intervention area, and finally where the open space public market takes place nowadays once in a week. This public market was the only use that existed in the ring, so we decided to keep it at the same area, designing also some permanent shelters that could also be used for shading for the pedestrians, and an open square at the end of it.

volos oneline bench
The municipality of Volos organized the competition “Volos needs its Bench” in order to find a new innovative design for the benches of the city. The participants should take into account the aesthetics and ergonomics of the object, its compatibility with other urban uses, and also the use of low-cost recyclable materials. The concept of our design was a continuous line that creates all the object. This oneline starts from two dimensions and comes into the three-dimensional space, creating the structure of the bench shaped as a “V” in reference to the first letter of the city. This concept combined with the requirement to use local and recyclable materials, led us to the idea of creating a bench that would be constructed in the same way as concrete reinforcing steel cages.

In order to combine our bench with other urban uses, we designed it in a way that it could also work as a bicycle rack. Additionally, in a variation of the initial design, half of the bench has no back, in order to provide sitting on both sides, depending on the location it would be placed. Regarding the materials, we chose steel for the frame ,wood for the sitting area, and concrete for the foundation, to reduce the cost and to support the local industry. The concept of the oneline construction would give a greater stability to the frame, while limiting the edges. Finally to make our design even more “clean we put the bendings of the frame to the base, and we chose to keep the sitting simple so that the emphasis would be given on the metal frame.

Jp20 MOBILE PAVILLION
Design teams, working in the studios at the University of Tokyo had two days to develop proposals for mobile artist pavilions to house visiting artists and scholars. Teams were encouraged to consider social and environmental issues in Japan, the 2020 Olympics, the idea of Shinto traveling shrines, and the idea of the hojoki (10x10 hut) in Buddhist teachings in the development of their design proposals. In our proposal, the designs stays as simple as possible, arising from the form of a plain cube. Recalling the basic principles of Zen Buddhism, this pavillion is a minimal object, able to move throughout the Japanese territory. Oak wood and stainless steel are the two materials used. Steel square beams and galvanised sheets are used at the stable part of the construction, and at the moveable cubic stools. The wood planks are put horizontally at the central floor, and vertically for the creation of the side facades. In order to be adaptable in different landscapes and needs, the pavillion can take 4 differents forms.

private house in filothei
This two-storey family house is built in Filothei, one of the few strictly residential areas of Athens, that mostly consists of private houses and green areas. The main residence is built far from the street facing the open view on the back side of the plot, and it’s sheltered by a big wall built along the plot boundary. The residence is divided in two functional areas: the living and dining spaces are accommodated on the ground floor of the building, while the bedrooms are located on the first floor. Large floor to ceiling glass panels serve to blur the boundary between indoors and outdoors. They can be slid open to discard the separation completely. Materials used to build the house include white plastered walls, wooden floors inside and out and white aluminum exterior joinery. Shutters are wooden and white too.

Kavouri is a peninsula that belongs to the area of Vouliagmeni, a seaside town and former municipality 20 km south of Athens. The residence is built in the middle of the plot, sheltered by two large cement walls alongside the plot boundaries. The entrance to the house is possible only through the garage and the back side of the building. Structured on two levels, the residence maximizes its connection to the outdoors, with the help of generous windows and floor to ceiling glass doors that open up towards the terrace. These windows are covered by large shutters, creating an interesting mixture of light and shadow in the interior. The structure is based on simple lines, created by white concrete beams, that protrude from the main structure to hold the sliding shutters and provide a panoramic view to the sea from the inside. These beams also create an exterior roof network, that gives a light shading to the outdoor space.

MUNICIPAL cultural center in ioulianou str.
This course is held with the collaboration of the design and the construction sector and lasts two semesters. It suggests the design of a multifunctional public building, in the present case a cultural centre with library ,at the central urban zone of Athens as a gesture that would enhance the revitalisation of the center of the city. The final result is mainly devoted to construction details that complete the initial concept, to materialization and to integration and environmental issues. In the current work, the building’s exterior facade is designed as a shell lifted 5 to 6 meters above, in order to enhance the connection between the building’s ground floor outdoor space and the surrounding pedestrian streets. In that way all the main functions are transfered to the first and second floor and the ground floor remains free for public use. At the same time it acts as a buffer between the two busy roads and the libraries inside.

The main buidling consists of three sections: The two of them, are formed along Ioulianou street. The large one contains the main library and the conference hall, and the short one contains the music library, some studios and an info point in the ground floor. The third one, in 3rd Septemvriou street is connected with the large one and contains laboratories and offices. The design of all three sections follows the initial concept of the shell, in a “π” sectional shape and are made of concrete to create a minimal facade with random spread horizontal openings. The inside facade of each shell is made of glass, revealing in that way the interior of the building. An outdoor cinema and a small gallery have been added to southern part of the site connected to the main building through the open-air public space.

be seen optics store, chalandri
“Be seen optics” is a franchised optical company, established in Athens in the early 50’s. The first store opened in the center of Athens, and two more stores have been added in the last years in the suburbs, including one in Kiffisia and one in Chalandri. Chalandri has become one of the most important commercial and financial centers and is constantly gaining worth compared to other northern suburbs, while the store itself is located in a busy commercial street. In this project, the store in Chalandri needed to be extended from a 40m² to a two-storey 200m² store, including also a 45m² outdoor space. The design combines the strict quality of cement and iron, with the coziness of an exposed-brick background and vintage touches in the furniture. A pattern-based curvilinear wall made of wooden bricks, covers the stairs at the northern side of the store, giving a characteristic structure to the interior. Finally, wooden tables with iron frame are placed along the principal axis, for the display of glasses.

APPARTMENT IN KYPSELI
On the 7th floor of a building in Kypseli, this 73m² appartment, is my personal residence. The building finished at 2011 and is a contemporary structure, following a modern architectural style with clean lines and white plaster coloured walls inside-out. Flooring includes dark-grey large tiles at the living spaces and oak wood planks at the bedrooms. The overall design combines an urban style interior with rustic touches. The living room and the kitchen share the same space. Forged cement has been applied to the two of the walls of this space and the other two are painted white with a light mixture of ocher. A fireplace and a box storage for wood made of sheet-metal combined with unfinished wooden shelves give an industrial character to the space. Retro objects and furniture and traditional woolen flokati rugs have been added to keep the space cozy and warm.

“keno”(void) logo design
The Association of Architects Achaia (S.A.N.A.), wishing to adopt the logo that would represent the 7th National Exhibition architectural project titled “KENO”, organised an open competition. The contestants should focus on the design of the word “KENO” in Greek characters, uppercase or lowercase. In my design, the letters of the word are formed by the space between them. In that way, the word that means void, is literally formed by the void itself. In a smaller scale, the logo consists of 4 basic squares, so that it could easily identifiable by far.

In the current work, the concept of “void” is focused on objects of everyday use, and on fantastic stories that evolve in these objects, presented in small clips. In the beggining of each clip, the camera is zoomed on the objects, so that the viewer can hardly distinguish where the scenes take place. During the clip, the camera gradually zooms out and in the end the object is revealed. Tiny, paper human figures are used for each story.

PRINTER
Conceptual approach of design problems is an undergraduate course, whose goals is the formulation and definition of a specific conceptual problem related to architecture -for example, the concept of the “void”and the development of its simultaneous study through small design exercises. Emphasis is put on the means and methods by which spaces are structured, organized and given meaning, in their wider sense, and not in the design of buildings.
