EXPERIENCE Namibia iGCDP Booklet 15.16
Dear Nomad The AIESEC Namibia iGCDP Booklet has been designed specifically for the incoming exchange participants (EPs) to deliver the maximum from their experience during their stay in Namibia. Our commitment is to deliver leadership & development in every experience, in the most impactful way for our EPs and our community. Post your experience you are going to see your country differently, you are going to see your president differently, no matter who it is, or what it is, music, culture, food, water, you will never see it with the same eye. Your showers will get shorter! You will get a sense of what globalisation looks like. You are going to see that global climate change is very real! And that for some people, their day consists of walking hours just for a bucket of water. And so, there are lessons that you can’t get out of the book ……
Yours in Exchange AIESEC Namibia 15.16 Team

CULTURE Yes, English is one of the official languages- almost everyone can understand it , minor exceptions here and there. Namibia is very rich with culture and most people, be in the city or up the north in the villages, celebrate their culture proudly & daily. Meet some of them‌ The Himba people reside in the northern part of Namibia close to Angola border. They are semi-nomadic pastoralists. They can be distinguished by their red skin and attire. They are polygamous and practice early age marriage. Namibia is their proud home and they are very warm and welcoming people. Herero’s are cattle-herding pastoralists who rate status on HIMBA number of cattle owned. Standard Herero language is used in Namibian Ovambos are from Ovamboland media- catch a few phrases! (rich soil) and they are the largest ethnic group in Namibia. Their HERERO primary crop is millet which is made into a thick Oshimbombo (porridgelike)- which forms their stable food. Most of their cultures are Westenized due to globalisation.

OTHER INTERNS IN NAMIBIA I still can not digest even half of everything that happened in those six weeks, but if there's one thing I can say for sure the social exchange in Namibia with Kayec Centre gave me a deeper understanding of the world. It was a mess of achievement, frustration, fullness and distress, power, powerlessness, force, fear and so many thousand feelings I never knew existed. I still cannot describe the amount of things that this experience added to me, my personal development, my perspective, and the kids ‌. Thank you Namibia, Thank you Africa!! -Amanda Rosa from Brazil More on: www.aiesecnamibia.org
OTHER INTERNS IN NAMIBIA Time at Side by Side was a package of mixed feelings for me; a very challenging one. I still remember how I arrived all dressed up and left home very dusty and not knowing how to express my emotions with these amazing kids living with different kinds of situations like Autism, hearing impairments, cerebral palsy and others. Then I realized how happy these children were, how thankful they were of the love and care they were receiving even if they are not saying it. People working at the Centre, including the directors were prepared for this and passionate about what they are doing. Everybody was inspired to cause change in the lives of these kids daily, amidst all the challenges. I needed to find my inspiration too.
