WORKERS DECONSTRUCT THE UNUSED PORTIONS OF THE FACTORY
DECONSTRUCTING BORG-WARNER:
ADAPTIVE REUSE MOBILE UNITS BORG-WARNER IS A 1.5 MILLION SQ. FT. FACTORY IN MUNCIE, INDIANA. IT IS SCHEDULED FOR DEMOLITION SOMETIME WITHIN THE NEXT YEAR. THIS PROPOSAL AIMS TO REUSE MATERIALS IN ORDER TO CREATE MOBILE UNITS THAT WILL CONVERGE TO FORM A LARGER GALLERIA IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SALVAGED PORTION OF THE FACTORY. THE UNITS WILL MOVE ALONG AN INTEGRATED TRACK SYSTEM AND WILL BE CONSTRUCTED FROM A STANDARDIZED KIT-OF-PARTS, INCLUDING PORTIONS OF THE EXISTING STEEL TRUSSES, ROOF DECK, WINDOW FRAMES, AS WELL AS FOUND MATERIALS. EACH UNIT WILL HOUSE A DIFFERENT PROGRAMMATIC NEED THAT WILL ADAPT OVER TIME, ALLOWING THE GALLERIA TO CHANGE AND GROW. THE MOBILE UNIT FEATURED HERE IS A FLOWERSHOP AND INDOOR GREENHOUSE THAT CATERS TO BOTH RESIDENTS AND VISITORS. INSTEAD OF COMPLETELY DESTROYING BORG-WARNER, IT MAKES MORE SENSE TO DECONSTRUCT CERTAIN PORTIONS, REDUCE THE OVERALL FOOTPRINT, AND PROVIDE NEW JOBS AND LIVING QUARTERS, THAN TO COMPLETELY START ANEW. A REDUCTION IN THE FOOTPRINT OF THE OVERALL BUILDING RESULTS IN 1) REUSABLE BUILDING MATERIALS, 2) MORE LAND FOR PARKS, GARDENS, AND OTHER AMENITIES, AND 3) A HIGHER DESNITY IN THE MAIN GALLERIA. BORGWARNER IS THEREBY BEING DECONSTRUCTED FROM THE INSIDE-OUT, RESULTING IN A MORE COMPACT, BETTER DESIGNED FINAL PRODUCT--AN EXPERIMENTAL COMMUNITY OF SUSTAINABLE LIVING.N GALLERIA

1.
IN THE FIRST STAGE OF CONSTRUCTION, COMPONENTS FROM THE BORG WARNER PLANT ARE REUSED TO FORM THE BASE. THE MIDSPAN OF THE EXISTING STEEL TRUSSES ARE CUT AND PINNED TO A BASE OF STEEL RUNNERS. THIS HELPS STABILIZE ANY LATERAL MOVEMENT WHILE ALSO FORMING THE UNIQUE SHAPE OF THIS PARTICULAR MOBILE UNIT. THE ENTIRE BASE IS MOVED ONTO THE TRACK SYSTEM AND TRANSPORTED TO ITS NEW LOCATION WITHIN THE MAIN GALLERIA.
2.
SEE STRUCTURAL DETAIL B
IN THE SECOND STAGE, THE GLASS AND STEEL FLOOR IS CONNECTED TO THE TRUSSES. THREE SHEATHS OF STRUCTURAL STEEL GLASS ARE LAMINATED AND PINNED TO THE CHORDS. THESE POINT PINS CAN BE EASILY REMOVED WHEN THE MOBILE UNIT IS DECONSTRUCTED. LED LIGHTS WITH TRANSPARENT WIRES HAVE BEEN EMBEDDED INTO THE GLASS LAYERS AND LIGHT THE FLOOR FOR NIGHTTIME USE (SEE DETAIL C). THE ALUMINUM DECKING IS TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE ROOF OF BORG-WARNER.

IN THE NEXT STAGE, THE REMAINING TRUSS ENDS (APPROXIMATELY 14’ HIGH) ARE PINNED TO THE FLOOR TRUSSES AND STEEL CHANNELS. THESE PINS PROVIDE MAXIMUM LATERAL AND VERTICAL BRACING. THE COR-TEN SIDING FOLDS AT SPECIFIED SEAMLESS JOINTS, ALLOWING THE CLIENTS TO CREATE A FLEXIBLE WORKSPACE FOR THE DISPLAY OF MORE PLANTS AND FLOWERS. ONE ENTIRE PANEL FOLDS DOWN TO FORM A RAMP FOR ACCESSIBILTY WITH A SLOPE OF 1:12.
4.
THE ADDITION OF COLORED GLASS LOUVERS ALLOWS LIGHT FROM THE GALLERIA SKYLIGHTS TO PENETRATE THE INTERIOR OF THE MOBILE UNIT, THEREBY HIGHLIGHTING THE UNIQUE COLORS AND TEXTURES OF THE PLANTS. THESE LOUVER CAN ALSO BE ADJUSTED TO ALLOW MORE OR LESS SUNLIGHT INTO THE SPACE. WOOD SHELVING AND STORAGE AREAS HAVE BEEN PINNED BETWEEN THE TRUSS WEB MEMBERS FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES. A SNAP-IN-PLACE ENTRANCE PANEL SECURES THE UNIT DURING OFF-HOURS.
5.
THE WINDOW FRAMES HAVE BEEN REUSED AND TURNED INTO A FLDED TRELLIS. THIS DYNAMIC ELEMENT DEFINES THE INTERIOR OF THE SPACE. A TIGHTLY WOVEN FABRIC IS STRETCHED ACROSS THE MUNTINS SO THAT HANGING CLEMATIS, IVY, OR OTHER PLANTS MAY BE DISPLAYED AND ALLOWED TO FLOURISH. THIS NETTING ALSO CREATES DAPPLED LIGHTING AND ENHANCES THE MULTIFACETED SENSORY-EXPERIENCE. THE DESIGN PARTIE FOR THIS ELEMENT IS BASED OFF OF THE EXISTING FORM OF THE BORG-WARNER ROOFTOP.
6.
EACH PANEL CAN BE FOLDED UP, MIMICKING THE PETALS OF A FLOWER. AS A WAY OF THE PANELS ISOLATE THE INTERIOR FROM THE REST OF BORG-WARNER.
