Mess Magazine PRINT DESIGN
An editorial publication with personality. Tasked with creating a miniature magazine, I took a rather unorthodox route due to a stipulation put in place; the publication had to focus on myself as the subject. To accomplish this, I designed a satirical, almost parody-like magazine that portrayed my selfdeprecating nature by creating a juxtaposition between the publication’s style and it’s content. Drawing inspiration from business magazines, I worked with bold, contrasting san-serif and slab fonts, as well as a strong, complimentary color palette of blue, orange, black, and white. Utilizing these characteristics, I designed a visually compelling minature magazine publication that features a research article, creative piece, an interview article, and accompanying advertisements.

Aurora WEB DESIGN
A fluid, hassle-free UI for dynamic weather. Given empty HTML and CSS files, accompanied only by the framework for a plug-in powered by JavaScript, I was let loose to design a functioning weather app, which I cordially dubbed ‘Aurora’. With user experience in mind, I realized that the best option would be to create an app that allowed the user to access information without hassle. I conceptualized a minimalistic app design that’s personality came from the 30 unique background images that change depending on current weather conditions. Typographic Posters PRINT DESIGN
Comparing angles in early 20th century typography. From an extensive list of font families, I had to select two nearly opposite typefaces and create a poster series showcasing each font individually, while maintaining consistency in the overall design of the posters. With this in mind, I decided to feature Avant Garde, a geometric, sans serif font, and Bodoni, a Didone, serif font. These two choices made sense because they have a stark contrast in style, but the similarity in their versatility. Avant Garde is a bold, modern typeface, mainly used for magazines and headlines and that Bodoni is a high-end, traditional typeface mainly used in the fashion industry. I discovered I could bridge the two through the use of angles—an element that could differ, yet still resemble the fonts and unite the posters.

8-Bit Diorama ANIMATION
Evoking nostalgia through pixels and chiptunes. Asked to depict a scene based on my interpretation of the word “memory”, I ventured to create something more than an average animation. My objective was to compose a nostalgia-driven audiovisual experience. Interpreting “memory” in a more literal sense of the word, I based my project on the sentimental nature of retro gaming. With such a broad theme, I narrowed my thinking in order to execute this project as I intended. My plans included recreating a setting from Chrono Trigger, a role-playing video game from 1995, in an 8-bit style of pixel art and pair it with an iconic track from the game itself. The Providence Athenaeum PRINT DESIGN
CONCENTRATION Print Design, Brochure Design, Typography, Photography
A modern brochure for a historical institution. Instructed to develop an up-to-date brochure design for an existing company or organization, I chose to approach the project in a way I hadn’t done before. Stepping far out of my comfort zone, I went to a library. I planned to design a brochure for The Providence Athenaeum, a community-driven library and cultural center located in Providence, RI. I put my twist on a typical tri-fold by creating a brochure with dimension: die cuts would help to make the brochure mimic a bookshelf, lending to its noticeability and intrigue.

Music-related clothing in a class of its own. When asked to develop a brand and build an e-commerce website to accompany it, I launched Chromesthesia, an online shop selling graphic t-shirts inspired by album covers. I focused on a basic structure for the site, ensuring consistency and ease of use, while maintaining personality through the use of bright colors, quirky fonts, and well-thought-out microcontent. Chromesthesia’s site is the perfect platform to showcase products while offering a delightful experience to any user. Explore the website at https://mdguay.github.io/chromesthesia/

Oswald Type Book PRINT DESIGN
A charming analysis of classic letter structures. When asked to create a type specimen book, I knew exactly which font I wanted to focus on—Bebas Neue. And then when I realized that body copy does not look good in all caps, I went with a better option: Oswald. I worked to find the best way to capture the true nature of this typeface. From a style standpoint, I created a bold, graphic-heavy book that utilized the distinct attributes specific to the Oswald family to emphasize its charisma. For structure, I laid out each spread to showcase a different element of typography; onepage overviewing variations of a specific element, the other using said element in practice.

Drive Title Sequence ANIMATION
CONCENTRATION
A 2011 neo-noir crime thrillers’ opening scene reimagined. When tasked with reconceptualizing a film’s title sequence in an entirely new style, I wanted to challenge myself. Though it’s not as ambitious as my initial attempt at a David Fincher film’s opening, I pushed myself to reimagine Jay Johnson’s Drive title montage. In order to stay true to the original, hypnotic title sequence, the project required a very particular style–one that clearly sets the pace and tone for the rest of the film. I accomplished this by utilizing digitally illustrated assets, a monochromatic color palette, and creative compositions within the frame. Watch the video at https://vimeo.com/266018149

Forge BRANDING
Providing youth with artistic opportunities. Challenged with developing a non-profit organization from scratch, and sparked by the decline of art programs in the United States, I created Forge: an institution that supports students who have an interest in the arts. I began the with a logo, designing it to convey a strong, confident brand. I created an icon resembling a banner and paired it with the name “Forge: a name that implies power and forward-thinking. To create awareness for the new organization, I created campaign peripherals, which consisted of apparel to promote the brand, a mobile app to inspire connection, and an infographic to educate and call for change.
