Chile's ASOEX launches China fruit promotional campaign at Shanghai's Huizhan Fruit Market The Chilean Fruit Exporters Association (ASOEX) has launched its 2017-18 export season for cherries, blueberries and other products in China with a workshop for importers at Shanghai's Huizhan Fruit Market. At the event, the Chilean organisation presented the new season for fresh fruit exports, focusing special attention on table grapes, cherries, kiwifruit, avocados, plums and blueberries; exports that will be supported by promotions to encourage not only greater consumption, but also the positioning of Chile as the number one supplier of off-season fruits to China. ASOEX's Marketing Director for Asia and Europe, Charif Christian Carvajal, said: “We met with importers from the Huizhan Fruit Market in Shanghai, China with the aim of analysing last season's Chilean fruit exports, and giving advance forecasts for the current campaign, focusing in particular on promotional work that we will carry out to encourage consumption of Chilean blueberries and cherries in China.” As part of the 2017-18 season promotional campaign in China, ASOEX will hold meetings with fruit importers, buyers and distributors at the Guangzhou, Beijing, Shenyang and Chengdu wholesale markets, in addition to meeting with Shanghai-based importers. Carvajal said that one of the aims of Chilean fruit sector was to gain access for Chilean fresh pears and citrus to China, as well as increasing consumption of cherries, blueberries, avocados and nectarines. He added that every one of the actions had been made possible thanks to the combined efforts of the Chilean fruit export sector and ProChile through the Promotional Fund for Agriculture Exports of Chile's Ministry for Agriculture. Chile is the leading exporter of fresh fruits to the Southern Hemisphere, explained Carvajal, having shipped more than 2.6 million tonnes of fresh fruits to different destinations during the 2016-17 season. Of this total, China accounted for 48.3% of all Chilean fruit exports to Asia. In terms of products, table grapes were the most exported product to China from Chile during the season, accounting for 42% of total exports to the country, followed by cherries at 23.5%, plums at 11.7%, kiwifruit at 7.6%, FOOD BUSINESS GULF & MIDDLE EAST

avocados at 5.4%, red apples at 5% and blueberries at 3.2%. The Huizhan event also included the participation of Steve Lee, Business Director of Publicis and Patti Sun, CEO of Publicis-partner BetterWay China who had the task of detailing the planned promotional actions for the campaign, including dates and locations. BetterWay China's Patti Sun said that as well as including a continuing budget of US$5 million for its implementation, the campaign would increase the amount of cities involved. “During the last campaign, we included 37 cities that corresponded to Tiers 1, 2 and 3, and this year we want to reach 58, which will also include Tier 4 and 5 cities and the potential for consumption they represent,” she said. “As well as this, to better coordinate and control the campaign, we will be hiring an expert in China.” Publicis' Steven Lee added that some of aspects of the campaign that would be enhanced this season by actions focused on Ecommerce and wholesale markets. “Although the results of the last campaign were very positive, there are aspects we would like to improve, particularly after gathering feedback from the Chilean fruit sector,” he explained. “For this reason, we are expanding work at an E-commerce level by continuing what we are already doing with T-mall and JD.com, but also increasing our participation on other platforms at a regional level. We will also be increasing our promotional actions for wholesale markets.” Looking at the blueberry promotional campaign, Carvajal said this would begin with online promotional actions in collaboration with Miss Fresh App and KOL to generate messages on social media, as well as launching advertising on vending machines. The campaign will also include appearances in Chinese media outlets, such as CCTV, Sina, Ifeng, DTV, and others.

MoU signed for China Fruit Logistica CHINA FRUIT LOGISTICA, the leading national trade show for China's fresh produce business, will benefit from a new alliance forged between the event's organiser, Global Produce Events (Shanghai) Co Ltd (GPE Shanghai), and national non-governmental organisation (NGO) China Good Agri-products Development and Service Association (CGAPA). The two organisations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate on CHINA FRUIT LOGISTICA with the common aim of fostering high-quality fresh produce from Chinese producers and brands. China Good Agri-products Development and Service Association, which comes under the authority of China's Ministry of Agriculture, is focused on modernising the country's agriculture sector and upgrading quality standards for domestic producers and suppliers. The NGO plays a key role in bringing together government departments and enterprises and promoting the exchange of information, human resources and technologies. CHINA FRUIT LOGISTICA, the new national trade show for China's fresh produce business, launches on 14-16 May 2018 at the Shanghai Convention & Exhibition Center of International Sourcing together with FRESH PRODUCE FORUM CHINA (FPFC), an annual two-day forum for Chinese and international fresh produce professionals. GPE Shanghai already counts key companies spanning the entire fresh produce supply chain in China and across the world among its customers. Under the terms of the MoU, the two organisations will work together on CHINA FRUIT LOGISTICA to create the country's best quality trade platform for growers, traders and retailers on a national scale. GPE Shanghai and CGAPA will work in tandem to attract producers from all provinces, municipalities and regions across China to participate as exhibitors and visitors. To this end, CGAPA will reach out to industry agencies and provincial and municipal agricultural authorities. It will also highlight and promote CHINA FRUIT LOGISTICA at its 'touch-points' with the fresh fruit and vegetable sectors such as the High Quality Fruit Industry Federation meeting and events. The two organisations see CHINA FRUIT LOGISTICA as a key vehicle to promoting cooperation and raising industry standards in China's fast-growing fresh fruit and vegetable business. The partners will develop a clear and transparent process for establishing and building brands of origin, and for related quality standards. They will also work together on securing speakers and panellists for FPFC'S conference programme. Tropical Fruit Congress at Macfrut 2018 The main players in the production and global trade of avocados and mangoes will gather at Macfrut to take part in a unique international event. The Tropical Fruit Congress, the first European summit on these exotic fruits, is going to take place at the Rimini Expo Centre on 10 and 11 May, 2018. The focus of this two-day event will be on examining current trends in the market, consumption and trade, but also scientific developments, technology and methods of selling products that are increasingly in demand in global markets. At the Congress, the spotlight will be on two products: Avocados and Mangoes, the major protagonists of the exotic fruit boom in Europe. The Forum will focus in particular on the Italian, German and French markets. As for the growing interest in these fruits, the data available confirm this trend. In the last few years, avocado consumption has grown significantly in the European and North American markets. According to data by the WAO (World Avocado Organization, Macfrut's prestigious partner), more than 350,000 tonnes of avocado were consumed in Europe in 2015. In 2016, consumption increased by 10% and, for 2017, it is expected to increase by more than 15%. This year, avocado consumption has grown exponentially in Italy, reaching +76%. The same applies to mangoes, regarded as one of the tropical fruits par excellence. Global mango production amounts to 40 million tonnes and is concentrated mainly in India, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Australia, Nigeria, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil and Peru. The main mango importers, instead, are the USA and the European Union. Mango consumption is also growing worldwide, especially in Italy where it has reached double digits, with volumes going up by 22% in the first quarter of 2017. The speakers at the Summit will be the world's leading experts on these tropical fruits: Xavier Equihua, CEO of WAO, Leonardo Ortega, Director of Research at the National Mango Board (USA), Carlos Crisosto of the DECEMBER 2017

The decision to export to the UAE is due first to the high income of the population, and therefore to greater spending capacity in the Gulf countries, but also to the fact that, in recent years, logistics have greatly improved,” he said. “We started with some sea shipments to the Gulf region a few years ago, and now we ship 365 days a year, both by sea and by air. The range of products we offer are the best in terms of flavour, ripeness and variety, with practical but elegant packaging that enhances the characteristics of strictly Italian produce, even in its colours. Solarelli produce comes from areas of Italy with the best production skills, where the Apofruit Italia cooperative works with its producers and its own handling facilities. The Solarelli range also includes Italian fruit and vegetables with PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) and PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status, in line with this policy of scrupulously selecting products to ensure that they maintain all their traditional characteristics. The main fresh goods offered are: baby watermelons and melons, strawberries, peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, cherries, kiwis, pears and persimmons, seedless grapes, oranges, apples, tomatoes, carrots and many more. AMONG 40 KINDS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES, BLUEBERRIES CAME FIRST IN TERMS OF THE CONTENT OF ANTIOXIDANTS

t is blue, bursting with goodness and might just be the future of Polish farming. The once humble blueberry is quickly becoming a cash crop as farmers gear up to meet soaring demand for the so-called 'superfood'. Six years ago a clutch of almost breathlessly enthusiastic health studies revealed that the fruit was packed with so much goodness and vitamins that blueberries achieved almost mythic status among foodies and nutritionists. Once seen as little more than a perfunctory pie filling, the berry has become Europe's most fashionable fruit. Jerzy Wilczewski set up his own specialist horticultural farm after his graduation from Warsaw Agricultural University (SGGW) with a BSc degree in 1979. The farm has grown in a quiet corner of the North-Eastern Poland and for over thirty years it has been getting bigger, developing and changing its character. “Among 40 kinds of fruit and vegetables, blueberries came first in terms of the content of antioxidants, i.e. substances that neutralise free radicals. The second spot was taken by grape juice, whose capacity was 2/3 that of antioxidant potential found for blueberries. They were followed by strawberries, kale, and spinach. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the equal amount of blueberries contains five times the antioxidants of pea, carrots, apples, marrow, or broccoli.” Wilczewski explains.

“The group of substances that make blueberries a valuable addition to our diet are phytyoestrogens (i.e. plant hormones). Among the plants of the heather family, cranberries are the richest in phytochemical content (five times more than blueberries and bilberries), followed by cowberries (three times). ”Blueberries are a popular alternative treatment in Japan, where people who spend long periods of time working in front of a computer screen drink blueberry juice to prevent eye fatigue. The mild winters and warm summers of the Mediterranean team up with traditional farming methods to grow a large and succulent crop; add a dash of strict regulatory quality control by the European Union and you get the finest natural result: a juicy, healthy and sweet fruit, grown just right just for you! The main kiwifruit variety produced is Hayward (light brown skin color/ bright green flesh with edible seeds). The average size is 70-130 grams. What are the health benefits of kiwis? Loaded with many important nutrients, Kiwifruits are a rich source of dietary fiber and is considered to be colon-protector. High levels of vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin E and flavonoid anti-oxidants such as beta carotene, lutein and xanthin, make kiwi a healthy snack. It is also an excellent source of vitamin C and provides over 150% of the daily

Finally, Kiwifruit provides 10% of the Recommended Daily Allowance of folic acid, or folate, essential to the reproduction and formation of red blood cells. It is those health benefits and excellent fruit quality that campaign Premium European Kiwi is set to spread the word about: a three year journey in United Arab Emirates, China and Canada brings consumers closer to European kiwifruit producers and gives them the opportunity to know more about cultivation, quality and flavor characteristics. lobal demand for exotic fruit is rapidly increasing. Today, the worldwide fruit puree concentrate market is valued at more than US$400m (Euro 332m) and is expected to grow to US$700m (Euro 581m) by 2026. Similar growth is expected in the exotic fruit puree concentrate market which is predicted to reach US$274m (Euro 227m) by 2026. What is causing this increase and how can exotic fruit processors meet the demand without compromising quality? juice is then extracted. However, as consumers look for better taste, a thicker consistency and to keep some of the important nutrients intact, processors are responding by peeling the fruits, removing the skin, seed pockets and stones to achieve a high-quality concentrate and puree.

Currently, fruit juices tend to be made from juice concentrate. However, manufacturers are starting to use puree concentrate instead. This shift provides consumers with a thicker, bettertasting, smoother drink and exotic fruits are a key ingredient within many of them. Exotic fruits include high quantities of fibrous material, which further increases its consumer appeal from a health perspective. As 'better-foryou' products become more popular, the demand for fruit puree concentrate is only going to increase and so are the varied ways in which it is processed. For example, when it comes to juice processing, most fruits are crushed and the DECEMBER 2017

Advanced technologies Fruit peeling is an important part of the juice and smoothie manufacturing process. Current methods involve certain fruits - such as peaches, apples and mangos - undergoing a lye peeling process. This sees produce pass through a boiling sodium hydroxide solution which burns off the skin. This process, however, uses large volumes of water, and can lead to high levels of food waste which makes the process inherently inefficient. Technological advances in steam peeling have created significant advantages over lye peeling. These allow for reduction in water usage, limiting the amount of produce wasted and contributing towards an altogether more sustainable process. Today, leading equipment manufacturers have delivered innovations which can steam peel and sort a range of fruits including apples, mango, peaches, nectarines and papayas. These innovations also help processors overcome problems found in particular fruits, such as the removal of seed pockets in apples and the pits in others. By helping in the removal of these issues, processors can provide a higher quality, smoother drink to consumers. Using steam peeling to remove the skin, and to create a smooth consistent surface around the outer surface and inner core, means that high volumes of fruits can be processed to a very high quality and with reduced waste. These high quality peeled fruits form the basis of the concentrate and puree that can be used in many applications. In recent years, we have worked closely with leading fruit processing companies in Europe and Asia to evaluate their steam peeling processes for use in high volume fruit processing lines. Our system enables processors to peel quickly and efficiently, so that the heat absorption of the fruit is significantly lower, in turn protecting it and making for a superior product.

EXOTIC FRUITS INCLUDE HIGH QUANTITIES OF FIBROUS MATERIAL, WHICH FURTHER INCREASES ITS CONSUMER APPEAL FROM A HEALTH PERSPECTIVE.

he third smallest country in the EU after Luxembourg and Malta, Cyprus' agricultural sector is small in comparison to its European neighbours. The success achieved in marketing and promoting halloumi cheese as an international brand demonstrates that the island can establish a unique identity for its products: the challenge now is to repeat this success with the island's other agricultural products such as olive oil, fruits and vegetables. Indeed, some 44 per cent of Cyprus' agricultural output derives from crop protection, which apart from the export products of potatoes, oranges, lemons, mandarins, grapefruit and grapes, also includes cereals which are a main source of fodder for the island's livestock farmers. According to a latest report, Cyprus' agricultural share of total domestic exports is around 13.4%, and it is quintessentially Mediterranean with health-promoting foods such as citrus fruit, vegetables, grapes and potatoes. As for processed agricultural goods, Cyprus' key exports are halloumi, fruit and vegetable juices and meats. The island's famous halloumi cheese has become one of the top export products for Cyprus. The country has a rich gastronomical history, and halloumi - with its rich flavour and particular texture - constitutes a cornerstone of Cypriot cuisine. Aquaculture products are the third most important produce in Cyprus, in terms of export value. Specifically, these products are sea bass and sea bream and approximately 65% of the total national production is exported to markets in Middle Eastern countries and the USA. The aquaculture sector represents about 75-80% both in terms of volume and value of the total national fisheries production, and the total national aquaculture value for 2015 reached Euro 39.2 million . The traditional markets for Cypriot citrus products have been Russia and the United Kingdom, both enthusiastic consumers of oranges, tangerines and mandora, a cross between a mandarin and an orange. Agricultural exports to the EU constitute around 64.2%, while other European countries 16.7% and Asia 16.2%.
