products and services now available, including cloud solutions, farm automation, UAVs, soil sensors, farm management platforms, climate control, robotics and more, AgraTech will open a wealth of opportunity in the agricultural industry in the Middle East and Africa. Governments in the region are also backing the move to modern farming techniques through various projects as well as investment in to the sector. In the UAE, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi has approved a series of incentive packages totalling up to AED1 billion ($272 million) for local and international AgTech firms. The UAE has also seen a pilot project that used UAVs, commonly known as drones, to create a highly accurate agricultural database that supports decision-making and forward planning by enabling the best use of resources and determining the optimum areas for crop growth. In Saudi Arabia, Red Sea Farms, another AgTech company, will utilise engineering and plant science to grow saltwater-tolerant crops with plans to produce 50 tons of tomatoes annually by 2020.

It is collected from over 100 sources, including government data enhanced with consumer and business data, and covers 94.8 percent of soybean acres, 91.7 percent of field corn acres, 91.9 percent of wheat acres, and 100.0 percent of cotton acres in addition to more than 150 crops, including specialty crops. As the Farm Service Administration (FSA) no longer provides acres, crops or producer codes, no other company provides this information to the industry.

processing or servicing in the milling of grains and cereals for food production. The PETKUS ROEBER OS901t fulfilled those criterion excellently, as the optical sorter combines RGB and additional unique light transmission in one platform. This innovative PETKUS solution expands the scope of application of optical machines and makes it possible to achieve higher quality in pasta, rice or flour industry through using upfront the high end quality sorting of the grain. With this technology, customers e.g. for durum processing for pasta manufacturers or backers could see and sort the durum due to its absorbance behaviour of the light. This is directly related to quality parameters of the durum and consequently to the quality of the semolina or the baking properties.

How non-land-based and non-fish-stock-based protein will become the protein of the future In the future feed for fish and animals will be produced partly by using protein with minimum dependence on soil and water. Unibio is the project leader of a new project funded by GUDP, the Green Development and Demonstration Programme, a funding programme under the Danish Ministry for Food, Fisheries, Equal Opportunities and Nordic Cooperation. Unibio and its project partners, DTU Aqua of the Technical University of Denmark, BioMar, a world leader in high-performance diets, the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences of University of Copenhagen (KU) and Danish Agro, an agroindustrial company, have been granted funding by GUDP for a project whose main objective is to validate and optimize the nutritional and functional properties of Unibio's Uniprotein® when used as feed for salmonids.
Earlier studies in salmonids have shown that Uniprotein® may improve growth and intestinal health and reduce N and P excretion. By inclusion of Uniprotein® in commercial feeds, the aim is to increase the production potential and animal welfare through improved performance of the tested species. The outcomes of the project will contribute to the introduction and development of a new sustainable and nonvolatile single cell protein ingredient for commercial use in fish feeds. Uniprotein® will be an alternative to overexploited protein sources such as fishmeal or land-based soy concentrate products. The production of Uniprotein® when using biomethane or waste gas will have low CO2 emissions, and the use of Uniprotein® in feeding is expected to reduce N and P excretion as a result of improved nutrient retention. The board of GUDP comments: “A good and relevant project that contributes to the development of new alternative protein sources for feed producers and thus the

within poultry. It is one of the leading poultry conferences in the world. Hamlet Protein's study was selected for an oral presentation at PSA. The presentation entitled “Effect of an enzyme-treated soy protein on the performance of broiler chickens infected or uninfected with Clostridium perfringens” was presented by Hamlet Protein's Global Poultry Segment Manager Alfred Blanch. The feeding trial that was carried out at Southern Poultry Feed and Research in Georgia, USA with Greg Mathis and Brett Lumpkins concluded that dietary protein makes a big difference when it comes to enteric disorders. The addition of enzyme treated soy protein (ESP) in starter diets, with a very low content of soy antinutritional factors, with or without antibiotic growth promoters, equals the weight of the birds infected with Clostridium perfringens and their FCR to that of uninfected chickens. “The dietary protein quality counts a lot if necrotic Clostridium perfringens confronts your flock”, says Alfred Blanch, Global Poultry Segment Manager at Hamlet Protein. The basal diet composition and, particularly, the dietary protein, plays a crucial role in the genesis of necrotic enteritis. In this sense, the reduction of soy anti-nutritional factors in starter diets for broiler chickens may be a good strategy to palliate the performance impairment due to mild necrotic enteritis outbreaks. Thus, the addition of HP AviStart, an enzymatically treated soybean meal (ESBM), in the starter diet, with or without antibiotic 14

growth promoters, equals the performance of Clostridium perfringens-infected broiler chickens to that of uninfected chickens. In other words, HP AviStart supplementation in starter diets will result in performance improvements in birds with necrotic enteritis, regardless of the use of antibiotic growth promoters. “With or without antibiotics, dietary protein makes a big difference when it comes to enteric disorders. The inclusion of HP AviStart, with a very low content of ANFs in starter feed may be a suitable tool to maintain the performance of the birds when it comes to coccidia vaccine and/or ABF broiler production systems”, concludes Alfred Blanch.

Exports are also active in Spain (+7.4%), while Bulgaria is the country that records the most significant increase in Italian tractors (+27%, for around 39 million euros). S
PACE 2019 will be held from Tuesday 10 September to Friday 13 September at Rennes Exhibition Centre. The livestock farming sector is constantly impacted by global economics and health issues. Everyone involved in livestock farming worldwide is aware of the importance of managing animal health along the entire livestock production value chain. The European political context is also changing. The upcoming elections are extremely important for EU countries, and agricultural issues must be given the attention they deserve in the debates. The upcoming negotiations on CAP reform

could shape policy for our sector in the autumn, a few weeks after SPACE. At the national level, our farmers are dealing with increasingly high consumer expectations. Today, biosecurity is the key to protecting and growing our sectors. Production models are changing and diversifying. Fewer young people are going into farming, and the pool of skilled labour to meet the demand in agricultural production is shrinking because these jobs are not attractive. Moreover, farming is by nature the first sector to be impacted by climate change. We must adapt and anticipate change by implementing new
techniques, new practices and new equipment. In such a changing, demanding and sometimes alarming context, it is important for our livestock farmers to have a place to meet, to demonstrate their expertise and their pride in their profession. demonstrate new solutions and explain how they are promoting responsible farming. SPACE is the key event that meets the expectations of livestock farmers across all sectors, including cattle, sheep, goat and poultry farmers. It is the only event that is able to bring together so many diverse and complementary actors. Based on the ongoing confidence of exhibitors, the full and varied programme of meetings and conferences and SPACE's international reputation as a world-class show, it is clear that the 33rd Expo will be the key livestock event of the season. The Exhibitors The number of exhibitors registered is once again high this year and reflects the confidence businesses have in our Expo. As of 13 May, 1,293 businesses have registered (1,281 in 2018, 1,273 in 2017, 1,262 in 2016, 1,257 in 2015 and 1,223 in 2014 at the same period). As of that date, nearly 400 international companies from 38 countries have registered. This strong participation reflects the position of SPACE in the worldwide panorama of Expos, and is the result of our organisation's constant efforts to develop the Expo. The 154 new exhibitors, including 85 international exhibitors, also attest to the appeal of our Expo at the global level. There were 44 new exhibitors on the same date in 2018. Exhibitors have requested 60,000m2 of exhibit space. All the halls will be fully occupied again this year (240m2 more were requested this year than last year on the same date), as will the outdoor exhibit space. High demand has once again JULY AUGUST 2019
been recorded in the halls dedicated to cattle farming: hall 1 and hall 11 (milking and related equipment). Hall 9 dedicated to animal feed and nutrition is also in high demand by exhibitors, as is Hall 4, geared toward biogas, the environment and data management. The poultry sector will occupy all of Halls 10 A and 10 B, featuring exhibitors involved in
genetics, buildings and equipment. SPACE is the only international event for the poultry sector this year. The outdoor exhibit space requested is 31,055m2. collaboration with AIA (Italian Breeders Association) and UmbriaFiere, the new section will occupy a total area of 6 thousand square metres and will include an exhibition area reserved for companies whose production is closely connected to the sector, such as animal feed and equipment. The “biomass space curated by Itabia in cooperation with FederUnacoma returns to Agrilevante, with a dynamic exhibition of the main operating machines used for the harvesting, conditioning and handling of biomass of agricultural and forestry origin for energy use. Inside Pavilion 20 there will also be a small exhibition overview dedicated JULY AUGUST 2019
to the biomass sector. There is a rich calendar of seminars envisaged by Itabia on this topic in the Conference Centre Room 5 dedicated to opportunities and critical issues of the innovative agroindustrial sectors in the Mediterranean area. The "green" space makes its debut in pavilion 20, which this year will be dedicated also to machines and equipment for gardening and landscaping. It will host the MiA and Vita in Campagna (Life in the Country) areas, reserved for multi-functionality in agriculture and to amateur gardening. The mechanical-agricultural professions will be the focus of the MechagriJobs initiative, promoted by Unacoma, FederUnacoma and Cai, which for the third edition returns to Bari to present to upper school students the new skills required by the sector as agricultural mechatronic engineer, commercial technician 2.0, and contractor technician. The programme of meetings organized for the exhibition is broad. These include two indepth discussions promoted by FederUnacoma on the economic aspects of Mediterranean agriculture and on mechanization for the area's islands. The New Business Media publisher organizes three conferences on Iot and mechatronics, conservation agriculture, and incomegenerating olive growing. The Informatore Agrario promotes a conference on animal welfare in the stable and a series of seminars in the Vita in Campagna area on sowing long-lasting hard wheat, organic fertilization of legumes and vineyard pruning.
Agrisicilia magazine focuses on the cultivation of tropical fruit in Southern Italy. The Universities of Bari, Bologna and Foggia hold a workshop on innovation in mechanics and plant engineering applied to agro-food and forest biosystems. Agrilevante relies on the active collaboration of ICE Agenzia, the Italian institute for foreign trade which promotes technical and commercial cooperation between Italy and countries that aim at a consistent technological development of agriculture, and therefore express a growing demand of new generation mechanical vehicles. In Bari, there will therefore be many delegations of economic operators from North Africa and from Mediterranean Europe, organized by ICE and FederUnacoma, which will create B2B meetings with the exhibitors. Admission to the event is free, subject to online registration on the site www.agrilevante.eu, and the official inauguration of the event is scheduled for 9:30 on Thursday October 10. FROM ARRIGONI THE "SHIELD SOLUTIONS" AGAINST HAIL
H
ail is one of the most adverse weather conditions for fruit growers, due to its oftendevastating effects. It can destroy entire crops and put the plants in the condition of not producing even in the years following the event. In recent seasons, thunderstorms with hail have become a constant of all summers. Arrigoni, a leading international player in the technical textile sector for agriculture, now offers solutions that are not only effective, but environmentally sustainable, calibrated on individual crops and particularly versatile for every need too. FRUCTUSÂŽ is the special line of nets woven with UVstabilized and high-tenacity HDPE monofilament. These nets are made with Leno weave, that is, made up of two different monofilaments for each warp chain. This particular weave ensures the run-proof characteristics of the
34
GULF AGRICULTURE
net, together with remarkable tenacity and long duration. Equipped with strong lateral and central selvedges, the nets of this range are particularly suitable for the installation in long rows. Finally, the FRUCTUS range nettings are particularly versatile and fulfill the different needs of each anti-hail system. IRIDEÂŽ instead, it is available in the UVA and DUE versions and is an effective range of anti-frost and anti-hail screens, highly run-proof thanks to their knitted mesh monofilament. The range offers nets ideal for covering tunnels, greenhouses and orchards. In addition, IRIDE MULTI PRO ensures the right hole size, thick meshing and robustness, the features that make this net the ideal solution to exclude the harmful Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, even in combination with FRUCTUS range nettings. The anti-hail systems for the protection of orchards can also be grouped into two types,
depending on the plant pattern, the morphology of the land and other important variables. These are the Flat system and the Roofstyle system. In the Flat system, the nets are installed horizontally to allow for easy passage of machinery. The relative ease of installation makes it the cheapest system, also for the relative ease of installation. The Roof-style system was the first anti-hail system used to protect plants. The nets are installed at an angle to help the hailstones slide off, avoiding dangerous accumulations that could compromise the stability of the structure. Arrigoni, to these two basic solutions, also adds the possibility of configuring a special V5 System, which represents an evolution with respect to the Flat system. The V5 was in fact recently developed to solve the problem of hail discharge from the nets. Poles, anchors and nets remain the same as the Flat system, as well as the height of the structure, determined by the longitudinal cables. What changes is the tension strength, reached with an elastic cable between the nets, which thus form a "V" between the rows. In this way, the hail is collected and channeled, which helps its discharge from the nets. The V5 system can also be installed on all types of orchards, with a distance between the rows greater than 3.5 meters and a height of 5 meters. JULY AUGUST 2019
WATER RECYCLING
SUSTAINABLE WATER USE IN THE POULTRY INDUSTRY
S
ustainability is a subject that is on everybody’s lips today. The industry is making many efforts to tackle this issue and comes up with various solutions concerning energy saving, CO2 footprint, food safety, traceability and water use. For responsible water use, Marel Poultry offers solid practical solutions. One clear example of this is the Mazzraty poultry processing plant in Qatar, equipped with a well thought-out water management system. Chicken production has a naturally low carbon footprint and requires a limited amount of resources, such as fertilizer, land and water. Using 2,000 liters of water to produce 1 kilo of chicken meat, poultry production needs a fairly modest amount of water. Just to compare, 1 kilo of chocolate uses 17,000 liters of water. Water isn't lost However, water use doesn’t mean that this water is lost. Recycling options are available to treat the JULY AUGUST 2019
water and make it fit for renewed use. The poultry industry has elaborated solutions for this. Mazzraty in Qatar called in the help of Marel Water Treatment to set up today’s most modern water treatment installation. This poultry facility is located in the desert, where nothing grows, so Mazzraty is highly aware of the importance of clean water in these circumstances. Treatment Water Treatment starts already in the poultry processing plant. All water used for transport, for cleaning and for the various stages of processing, is collected and drained to the waste water treatment facilities. In the first phase, the physical pretreatment takes out fat material and larger coarse parts. After that, the biological process in a big basin decomposes the pollution and converts it to biological sludge and purified water. Irrigation In the direct surroundings of Mazzraty’s poultry processing
plant, four large green circles in the middle of the yellow sand plain catch the eye. This is irrigated land, made fertile with the help of Mazzraty’s treated water. Besides being used for truck washing, the purified water is excellently fit for artificial irrigation of areas that are otherwise dry land. Mazzraty manages to drive four center pivot systems with this recycled water to irrigate four quarter sections (each 800x800m). The company grows mainly grass, which they can use in their feed mills. Lowest impact Mazzraty’s facility has been designed to not waste or leave behind residual material and all activities aim at causing the lowest possible impact on the environment. The reuse of cleaned waste water from the factory as irrigation water is part of Mazzraty’s bigger environmental plan, which also involves a reduced CO2 emission and production of their own chicken feed. MOBA FORTA GT100 THE GAMECHANGER IN EGG GRADING
M
oba introduced its new grading machine the Moba Forta GT100 (Grading Technology 100) in the Spring of 2019. The Forta GT100 can produce 100 cases/hour or 36,000 eggs/hour and can be equipped with up to 18 packing lanes. By incorporating three crucial aspects for a worry-free operation, the Forta machine is the gamechanger in egg grading. Topline technology Proven and reliable systems, such as Moba's individual egg handling concept, are combined with the latest technology. With this system each egg is treated as an individual product, from the moment the eggs arrive on the rollers at the infeed section, all the way down to the consumer pack, any contact
36
GULF AGRICULTURE
between eggs is avoided. Industry confirms that individual egg handling results in at least 2% increase in sellable eggs. The Forta is user-friendly and based around two main screens. The main control panel enables a quick set up of new products on different packing lanes which produces constant product quality. The large status-screen tells which products are processed and to which quality levels they comply. The Forta is iMoba ready which means insight into the production and quality performance of the operation is easily provided. Future-proof machine platform Moba understands that needs and requirements can change
throughout the life cycle of the equipment, therefore the Forta is designed to be a future-proof machine platform. This means that the egg grader can be configured to specific needs by expanding through different detection devices (optional) such as an Egg Inspector, Crack Detector and Blood Detector. Hygienic design Reliable and food-safe production starts with hygienic equipment which is fast and easy to clean. The Forta meets all the requirements of the highest hygiene standards such as a washable infeed and packing lanes with removable parts for cleaning postproduction. From the time the eggs arrive on the rollers at JULY AUGUST 2019
POULTRY
the infeed section, all the way down to the consumer pack, any contact between the eggs is avoided. This reduces the risk of cracked egg shells, minimises the chance of cross contamination and allows data to be collected from each individual egg. Specifications The Forta is equipped with standard features which can be expected of a Moba egg grader like for instance: o Foamable and low pressure cleanable infeed system with mechanical orientation system o Central dirt-water collection under infeed o Two roller cleaning brushes o Weighing system o Main control panel o Inkjet provisions
o HelpDesk connection system (internet connection required) Some of the high end features can be integrated optionally such as: o Crack detection
