Increase fruit production by optimal water dosing Substrate growing is gaining popularity among soft fruit growers. Macfrut 2017: International boom Macfrut keeps growing. The 34th edition of the international trade fair for the

fruit and vegetable sector, to be held in Rimini from 10 to 12 May 2017, will be larger (8 pavilions instead of 7 as in last year's edition), more innovative and, above all, more international. In addition to the many new features introduced in recent months, these numbers show a change of direction that began three years ago and is still ongoing: three months before the event, the number of international exhibitors has already increased by 30% compared to last year's edition, with 40 participating countries including many new entries from all five continents.

This number also includes new emerging companies in the international scene, from countries such as Angola, Ethiopia, Uganda, Guatemala,

Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Uruguay. Delegations of traders from Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa, Senegal, Ghana and many other countries will also be present.

This overview highlights the key role to be played by Africa.

"In last year's edition of Macfrut, in line with the appeal made by Kofi Annan, we launched the idea of fruit and vegetables as a driving force for the growth and development of the African States - explains Renzo Piraccini, President of Macfrut - On this occasion, 18 representatives were present including ambassadors and sales departments from SubSaharan Africa. With an apple production outcome of 38.5 million tons a year and an acreage of 2.3 million, China is the largest apple producing country in the world. Still, these vast amounts of fruit are largely grown on small scale orchards with little machinery or technology, which offers great business opportunities for companies working in this sector.

The Fiera Bolzano Exhibition Center with its international trade show Interpoma in Bolzano has a world renowned know-how when it comes to the cultivation, storage and marketing of the fruit of Adam and Eve, and is therefore organizing the first Interpoma event in the Chinese province

of Shandong. Shandong is the most important apple production area in China with a harvest of 9.3 million tons of apples a year. But over 90% of all orchards still lack protection against hail, birds or frost, less than 20% of them have fertigation facitites and the degree of mechanization still lies under 30%. internationally participated fair in the agricultural sector, with exhibitors from forty-five countries and visitors from more than one-hundred and sixty countries. The reorganization of the fair quarters will be a decisive step to consolidate the event which is among the most important in its sector at a global level.

The EIMA international exhibition is one of the most successful in the international trade fair scene. The exposition of agricultural machinery has in fact registered a steady increase in terms of exhibitors, visitors, foreign operators, with a peak in the past five editions, held from 2008 to 2016, a period in which - because of the international crisis and because of the proliferation of similar

events in the emerging areas the European trade fair sector has been at a standstill.

Despite this negative economic trend, EIMA has gone from hosting 1.635 exhibitors in 2008 to 1.915 in the 2016 edition, held in November, with a 17% increase. Furthermore, the number of visitors has gone from 140.700 in 2008, to the record number of 285.000 during the 2016 edition, a 103% increase. The number of foreign operators (98%) has increased in a similar proportion: from 22.500 in 2008 to 44.500 in the last edition. These figures clearly indicate that EIMA has reached a prominent position in the international scene of trade fairs, becoming one of the leading events in terms of

exhibitors and visitors, also among the fairs with highest number of international participants, thanks to the presence of manufacturing industries from forty-five countries and visitors from more than one-hundred and sixty countries.

Agritechnica Asia for Bauer was a complete success Recognizing that great potential for the European agricultural machinery industry lies dormant in the Asian region, the German Agricultural Society (DLG) put together an AGRITECHNICA ASIA in Bangkok this March for the first time. The first Radicepura Garden Festival On April 21st at Giarre (Province of Catania) in Sicily the Radicepura Garden Festival, promoted by the Radicepura Foundation, will open its doors for the first time.

The festival is the first international event dedicated to Mediterranean garden design and landscape architecture, and it will involve young designers, institutions, firms, and great protagonists of landscape art and architecture.

Pest-control measures to stop the Red Palm Weevil in Tunisia A small red weevil that destroys palm trees has rapidly expanded its global spread and threatens date and coconut production if its advance is not stopped.

Scientists, pest control experts, agricultural ministers and farmer representatives have begun a three-day meeting at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome to debate and define an international action plan to stop the spread of the Red Palm Weevil. The pest attacks dateand coconut-producing palms, as well as ornamental palms found in many European cities.

Over the last three decades the weevil has spread rapidly through the Middle East and North Africa, affecting almost every country in the region. In total it has now been detected in more than 60 countries including France, Greece, Italy, Spain and parts of the Caribbean and Central America.

"The Red Palm Weevil represents the most dangerous threat to date palm," FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Near East and North Africa, Mr. Abdessalam Ould Ahmed, told

attendees at the opening session.

"Insufficient implementation of phytosanitary standards, lack of an effective preventive strategy and insufficient monitoring of response measures explain the failure in containing the pest so far."

The Scientific Consultation and High-Level Meeting on Red Palm Weevil is hosted by FAO in collaboration with the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM).

"The Mediterranean area harbours a vast biodiversity of plant species that must be protected for social, economic and environmental reasons. A sustainable protection strategy is therefore more essential than ever to protect the whole region from phytosanitary threats," said Cosimo Lacirignola, Secretary-General of CIHEAM. The weevil causes economic losses in the millions of dollars annually, whether through lost production or pest-control costs.

In Gulf countries and the Middle East, $8 million is lost each year through removal of severely-infested trees alone. In Italy, Spain and France, the combined cost of pest management, eradication and replacement of infested palms,

and loss of benefits was around Euro 90 million by 2013. This cost is forecast to increase to Euro 200 million by 2023 if a rigorous containment program is not in place.

Part of the problem is that the Red Palm Weevil is extremely difficult to detect in the early stages of an infestation because there are few externally-visible signs that the pest has taken over a tree: around 80 percent of the pest's life-cycle is hidden from view. For extremely tall species, an infestation in the crown of the tree is even harder to detect. Once an infestation has taken hold it is too late to save the tree.

Palm trees are an important resource for many communities in the Middle East and North Africa. Dates have been a basic food staple for centuries, and are now an important economic crop. More than seven million tonnes of dates are produced annually. In total, around 100 million date palm trees are cultivated today, 60 percent of them in Arab countries. The Red Palm Weevil attacks young, soft trees that are less than 20 years old. Around half of the 100 million date palm trees fit this criteria and are therefore vulnerable.

The MENA region represents an increasingly important market that needs a dedicated trade and business platform like AgraME. MENA's shares of growth in worldwide imports of corn, wheat, and poultry are 23 per cent, 44 per cent, and 31 per cent respectively.

Where consumption is concerned, poultry accounts for 50 per cent of all the meat consumed in MENA countries. In 2013, Saudi Arabia was one of the world's largest importers of broiler meat, with a total of 875,259

he International Plant Trade Fair in Essen (IPM) has once more proven that it is an indispensable inspiration, communication and ordering platform for the global green sector. As the top speaker, the digital expert Sascha Lobo talked about the subject of digitisation in the green sector.

Over 57,000 trade visitors from all over the world travelled to Messe Essen from January 24 to 27 to obtain information about the newest plant breeds, innovative horticultural technology, floristry trends as well as sales-promoting products for the point of sale from 1,577 exhibitors from 45 nations and to order goods for

the coming season. The Dutch put in a strong appearance at the trade fair. Our neighbour was the proud partner country of the 35th edition of the world's leading trade fair for horticulture. The mood was outstanding amongst the exhibitors and the visitors alike.

he organisers of the Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture (GFIA) have hailed the fourth edition an unmitigated success and a game-changer in the development of sustainable farming across the GCC and wider Middle East.

Thousands of farm owners, government officials, international and regional agricultural scientists, innovators and investors attended the event held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (20-21 March) to explore more than 300 solutions showcased by exhibitors and attend high level conference sessions, panel discussions, workshops, innovation presentations and technical tours.

His Highness Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, the GFIA conference featured speakers from around the world tackling five key challenges: climate-resilient crops; growing the aquaculture industry; futureproofing animal health; smallholder farmer development; and sustainable animal production.

The much anticipated two-day event, which attracted over 5,900 participants from over 80 countries, acts as an international platform for a debate over global food security and water scarcity - two major issues the world faces today.

Thamer Al Qasemi, Director of the Communication and Community Service Division at ADFCA, said: “Our unique Hosted Programmes for both farmers and scientists were platforms for game-changing discussions in our ongoing efforts to take the most innovative ideas from the research lab to the fields.

“The GFIA is one of the few events in the world to present solutions and inspire debate across all types of food production and we have been very pleased with the results and discussions that have taken place here in Abu Dhabi.”

Ocean Harvest from Ireland, Arvo Tec and EverGreen Farm Oy from Finland, Ponix Systems in Austria, Beijing Kingpeng from China and AgriLife from India all did significant business at the event and have all re-booked to exhibit in 2018 alongside a host of homegrown UAE companies including Emirates Future, Radoom Agriculture Establishment and Stud Pac. More than 50 innovative solutions were presented across the two day event to support more productive food production across the crop, livestock, aquaculture and horticulture industries.

ADFCA innovations included sustainable beekeeping in the UAE, fruit plantation (technologies and operations) and climate control in highly technical agricultural nurseries.

Five innovations published by UAE University were: a customised soil and irrigation monitoring system; recognition of plant diseases using smart photo processing; extracting organic antibiotics from dates; deep irrigation study for palm trees; and technologies to increase local citrus trees.

They covered diverse topics such as mitigating enteric methane production from ruminant animals, the early detection of the red palm weevil, how to sustainably produce food in urban areas, aquasourcing to retain and absorb moisture, taking advantage of fully sustainable indoor growing systems, sustainable beekeepers in the UAE, and developing the internet for farmers without the internet.

Dutch firm Solynta presented their breakthrough findings which have unlocked the tremendous potential of potatoes - 25 gram pristine true seeds which accurately, predictably and quickly breed new varieties with durable disease resistance, increased yield and are resilient to climate change.

In Ovo has developed a device which will stop the killing of 3.2 billion male chicks every year; the technology is capable of gender typing the egg, instead of the chick, thus improving animal welfare as well as efficiency in the farming methods and tackling a major issue in poultry.

The Bagshan Bee Research Department from the King Saud University showcased their beehive system which has been designed with favourable conditions inside the beehive colony, suitable for local environmental conditions.

Due to the high temperatures and dryness of the Middle East, beekeepers lose almost 70% of bees during the summer. The new system uses 7 frames, locally produced,

which will be fully equipped with humidity and temperature controllers to prevent bees from death in the colony.

Engender Technologies received positive feedback following their presentation on controlling the composition of a dairy herd. The international animal breeding industry needs an affordable and effective sperm sex sorting product, and Engender has developed a proprietary process to separate X (female) and Y (male) bearing bull sperm cells, enabling dairy farmers to accelerate gain and improve productivity.

The day after the conclusion of the event, five technical site tours were arranged to give participants the opportunity to visit some of the best sustainable farming operations and businesses, as well as research and development facilities in the UAE. The tours took place at the Aquaponics Farm in Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Farmers' Services Centre Model Farm, the Seawater Energy and Agricultural System and the International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture in Dubai.

SIMA 2017 DELIVERS ON ITS PROMISE

he 77th edition of SIMA, the international trade show for agriculture and livestock suppliers, came to a close on March 2, 2017. Over its 5-day duration, the show welcomed 1,770 companies from 42 countries and recorded 232,000 entries including 23% from abroad: a 3% drop compared with the 2015 event.

VISITORS WITH PLANS In spite of a challenging economic environment, professionals from the farming sector came together at SIMA with the firm intention of looking towards the future with a realistic and optimistic philosophy. Yoann Marchand, Communications and Sales Promotion Manager at Massey Ferguson France noted “a satisfactory atmosphere which was unexpected at this complicated time, and visitors with interesting profiles and projects, in search of technological solutions.”

OVERVIEW OF MYCOTOXINS IN FEEDINGSTUFFS IN MIDDLE EAST IN 2016 Authors: Radka Borutova, PhD DVM, Business development manager at NUTRIAD International

xcessive rains close to the time of harvesting in South American corn-exporting countries influence the quality of local grains. Corn and soybeans from Argentina and Brazil are exported to many countries in South America, Africa, Russia and the Middle East. A lot of problems with the grain quality could appear in corn-importing countries in 2016-2017 due to the weather conditions. South American grain producers have mentioned that sometimes they were unable to harvest some of their grain because it was too wet and it germinated on the cob. In addition, the average temperature in that region of

around 24-32ºC causes a flourish of the Fusarium mould species (Picture 1). F. graminearum is a plant pathogen which causes fusarium head blight, a devastating disease on wheat and barley. The pathogen is responsible for billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year.

The 2016 Mycotoxin Survey supported by NUTRIAD International included 89 samples of different raw materials as well as finished feeds from Middle East. All samples were collected during the whole of 2016 from farms or animal feed production sites. Sample providers were advised to follow the principles of good sampling (Richard, 2000). Analytical personnel and/or laboratory staff were not involved in the sampling and did not influence any part of this procedure. Almost 500 analyses were conducted to test for the

occurrence of the 6 mycotoxins most frequently found in agricultural commodities intended for animal production. The survey provided an insight into the incidences of aflatoxin B1 (AfB1), ochratoxin A (OTA), zearalenone (ZEN), deoxynivalenol (DON), T-2 toxin and fumonisins (FUM).

All six mycotoxins were analyzed by using lateral flow quantitative method for the detection of mycotoxins (Charm Sciences). For the purpose of data analysis, non-detection levels were based on the limits of quantification (LOQ) of the test method for each mycotoxin: AfB1< 2 μg/kg, ZEN < 25 μg/kg, DON < 250 μg/kg, T-2 toxin <10 μg/kg, OTA <1 μg/kg and FUM < 250 μg/kg.

Results The results showed that 97% and 96% of the samples were MARCH APRIL 2017

RESEARCH contaminated with ZEN and OTA, respectively (Table 1, Figure 1).

Unexpectedly, more than 88% of the samples contained T-2 toxin.

The average concentrations of all recovered mycotoxins were medium to high, meaning that some samples were not only positive for AfB1, but the levels were far above maximum levels set by COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) No 574/2011. The EU regulation is not really valid in many countries of Middle East but may be used as a reference. One sample of corn and one of finished feed were contaminated with 60 and 90 μg/kg AfB1, respectively. The highest concentration of DON detected in one of the samples of finished feed reached 4000 μg/kg.

Almost 60% of the samples contained FUM, mycotoxins affecting immune system of all poultry species and young ruminants. The FUM average concentration reached 2953 μg/kg which is medium risk concentration (>LOD but below EU recommendation levels) for breeding poultry and layers.

Unexpectedly, the results showed that the average concentration of DON was 642 μg/kg which is significant. Several samples were concurrently contaminated with 4 to 6 mycotoxins which may lead to synergistic interactions among them. The maximum concentration of FUM found in several samples of finished feed and one sample of maize was 6000 μg/kg. This high concentration may have a significant effect on

health and performance of farm animals, especially young and breeding poultry.

Discussion Avian mycotoxicosis is considered to be one of the most important problems in the poultry industry. It causes severe losses not only in terms of lost performance, but also as an immunosuppressive agent increasing the bird's susceptibility to diseases.

Feeding DON or fumonisincontaminated feed in low concentrations is a predisposing factor for the development of necrotic enteritis (Antonissen et al., 2014). In addition to the morphological changes induced to the intestinal villi by DON, it is suggested that this mycotoxin negatively affects nutrient utilisation (Awad et al., 2005a, 2005b, 2007).

There is also an evidence that mycotoxins increase pathogenic bacterial colonisation (Salmonella spp., E.coli) of the intestinal tract (Kumar et al., 2003). Parasitic infections are more severe in combination with mycotoxins too.

Combination of Eimeria tenella infection and aflatoxicosis in broiler chickens exaggerates the course of coccidial infection (Ellakany et al., 2011). According to Girgis et al. (2010) the combination of DON, zearalenone (ZEN) and fumonisins alters the Eimeria-induced immune response. Moreover, mycotoxin contamination of broiler feed may reduce the efficacy of anticoccidial treatment with lasalocid (Varga and Vanyi, 1992).

Gut-associated lymphoid tissue represents almost 70% of the entire immune system. Due to negative effects of mycotoxins of the gastrointestinal tract described above, immunity acquired through vaccination can be impaired by ingestion of contaminated feed. The Egyptian study of Hegazy el al.

(2011) revealed that mycotoxicosis might be the cause of vaccination failure against Avian Influenza virus.

Mycotoxins reduce the level of antibodies following infection or vaccination and reduce the activity of phagocytic cells. Suppressed immune function by mycotoxins can eventually decrease resistance to infectious diseases, reactivate chronic infections and/or decrease vaccines efficacy (Oswald et al., 2005). The presence of mycotoxins in poultry rations could therefore lead to a breakdown in vaccinal immunity and to a consequent increase in the occurrence of diseases such as infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) (Somvanshi and Mohanty, 1991) or Adenovirus (Shivachandra et al., 2003). Low levels of toxins in rations, below observable overt toxicity, are also likely to alter normal immune functions.

Conclusion This mycotoxin survey concluded that several raw feed materials and finished feeds available and utilized in Middle East in 2016 were of poor quality (>LOQ and above EU recommended levels) in terms of mycotoxin contamination.

RESEARCH concluded that a very similar situation is expected for the year 2017 and raw feed materials and finished feeds should not automatically be considered safe to be fed to all animal species.

Vigilance is always advisable as cereals in animal feeds originate from many sources.

Caution is advised as several continental European cereals and South American soya and maize harvested in 2016 have been shown to be contaminated with medium to high concentrations of mycotoxins and these might be exported to Middle East countries.

Disease outbreaks in farms are known to have economically devastating effects as the whole flock/herd can be affected. The occurrence of diseases has a direct negative impact on the economic viability of poultry farms as outbreaks represent major cost increases and loss of profit. It is clear that even low dietary levels of mycotoxins may alter the animal health and overall farm profitability by increasing the susceptibility of animals to infectious diseases and by decreasing vaccine efficacy.

ase IH, a global leader in agricultural equipment, is beginning a year of celebrations to commemorate its 175th anniversary at the brand's global headquarters in Racine, Wisconsin. It was there, on the shores of the Root River, that founder Jerome Increase Case established the Racine Threshing Machine Works to produce a revolutionary machine to speed up the separation of grain after harvest.

“I find it amazing to see just how far the farming industry and our company have come during the last 175 years especially given the fact that we are stronger than ever before today,” Case IH Brand President, Andreas Klauser, states.

The company's beginnings were closely linked with those of the American economy, as American pioneers moved west and new farms were established there to feed the growing population centers in the East. In 1869, Case went on to manufacture the first steam engine

tractor, which though wheeledmounted was drawn by horses and used only to power other machines, then in 1876 built the first selfpropelled traction steam engine. As steam engines quickly replaced horses for threshing, the J.I. Case Threshing Machine Company became the world's largest producer of steam engines by 1886.

In 1902, five companies merged to form the International Harvester Company in Chicago, the deal being brokered, personally, by J.P. Morgan, the American banker who dominated corporate finance and industrial consolidation at the time.

The company produced its first combine harvester in 1915 and in 1923 introduced the Farmall®, the world's first row-crop tractor.

Providing greater productivity, reliability and safety, it was a revolutionary unified system of tractors and implements for plowing, cultivating and harvesting. The growth path started in 2008 under the guide of Mr. Leonardo Valenti (CEO), and with the investment fund Wisequity, leading to the acquisition of CIFO in 2014.

s summer approaches, and the weather heats up, so does the competitive season for horse shows, racing and other equine events. This is the time of the year that severe heat-related stress occurs in equine athletes.

Heat Stroke also known as heat exhaustion or hyperthermia, heat stroke is a condition that occurs with horses performing a great deal of work in excessively hot or humid conditions. When the horse is unable to lose body heat, its body temperature goes up rapidly, causing severe (and sometimes fatal) health concerns. Problems develop and the cooling system breaks down during hot, humid weather when sweat doesn't evaporate and adequate cooling cannot take place. The result is heat stress, which often leads to

If we don't provide at least a minimum electrolyte replacement, horses show up with such medical conditions as metabolic alkalosis, inefficient transport of oxygen and energy substrates, poor tissue perfusion, thumps, muscle spasms, exertional rhabdomyolysis, cardiac arrhythmias, gastrointestinal stasis, anhidrosis, kidney impairment, and poor recoveries.

(Actually, poor heart and respiratory recovery is one of the key signs that can lead you to recognize the problems associated with the task of accomplishing thermoregulation.)

The point is, most of these problems mentioned stem from the resulting dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Thus, it is essential to correctly manage and supplement horse's diets with electrolytes.

Low Heat Feeding Many equestrians would know about cool feeds, but what we are referring to is feeds that do not provide much heat as a result of fermentation in the hindgut. This is done by processing grains by, processes such as Micronizing. This enables nearly all of the starch in the grain to be digested in the small intestine, which results in little or no heat produced. Thus the hindgut only has to digest the fibre in the horse's diet, which in turn dramatically reduces the amount of heat generated by fermentation.

Fat is digested quite efficiently in the horses' small intestine and does not produce any heat whilst being digested.

The problem however is that high fat feeds in the tropics can quickly go rancid and moldy.

Anti-oxidants and mold inhibitors can be added to these feeds, which provided they are stored correctly will greatly prolong the effective use by date of the feed.

Elevated environmental conditions reduce the horse's appetite. Micronizing improves feed efficiency, thus less feed is required to be fed to the horse.

Also the Micronizing process actually enhances the palatability

of grains and is a useful tool to help keep horses eating during times of environmental stress.

exercising horse. This test combines ambient temperature with relative humidity. (To convert Celsius into Fahrenheit F = ( 9 * C / 5) + 32) How does a Horse Chill Out? The single most important means the horse has for getting rid of the enormous heat load generated during exercise is evaporation. This accounts for approximately 65% of the heat dissipation. Sweat is evaporated off of the skin surface and cools the horse. The lungs account for approximately another 25%.

The capacity of the respiratory tract to dissipate heat from the body becomes very important under conditions of high humidity and high temperature when evaporative conditions are not favorable.

High humidity makes evaporative cooling less efficient.

The combination of high temperature and high humidity combined can lead to serious

trouble quickly. Direct sunshine on a clear day intensifies the problem.

How Can I Manage Heat Stroke?

Hose horses with cold water.

Hose the horse down then take it for a 1-minute walk, then repeat hosing. This will encourage the dilation of capillaries close to the skin, which will increase the evaporation of heat from the horse.

Encourage horses to drink cool water (small amounts frequently). If you are able to monitor the amount of water your horse drinks it will give you a good idea of how much water it is consuming. Horses working in hot/humid conditions should drink approximately 50-70Litres of water per day.

In severe cases vets have been known to give cold-water enemas or drenches to cool the horse's core body temperature down to approximately 38°C.

The critical temperature, one that is characteristic of a lifethreatening situation, if maintained for any length of time, is 40-41°C. Supplement electrolytes daily, 60 gram of salt.

Ensure that the horse has plenty of ventilation and access to a cool breeze as convection helps cool horses quicker. If none is available fans / air conditioners can be used to produce an artificial breeze. (Remember poor ventilation in stables can lead to respiratory problems).

Stick to the shade and avoid strenuous exercise between noon and 3pm.

Remember that weather forecasts quote the temperature in the shade, so a horse out in a field with no shade or shelter and limited water supply can suffer bad heatstroke Avoid leaving horses standing in horseboxes or trailers in direct sun.

Do not leave your horse shut in a hot stuffy stable when there is no breeze.

Allow small drinks at intervals during exercise even before competing.

Give soaked hay and sloppy, wet feeds to help get water on board.

Rapid rehydration will not be possible with water alone as electrolytes, particularly sodium, are needed. There are a variety of commercially available equine oral replacement electrolyte solutions on the market, but it is important they are made up at the correct concentration and that your horse will take them.

Adding apple squash or apple. juice helps to mask the taste It is worth giving electrolytes before strenuous exercise as a preventative measures.
