fruits and vegetables in the UAE will receive an in-depth analysis of Italy's premium fruit and vegetable brand, Solarelli, at the forthcoming fresh produce event, WOP Dubai, held on 5-7 December 2017, at the World Trade Centre, Dubai. Solarelli is part of the Apofruit Group as its top quality Italian fruit and vegetable brand that guarantees seasonal fruit and vegetables, following rigorous cultivation methods, where every step demonstrates great innovation, and quality and control over the entire production and supply chain, perfected over the years by this major Italian cooperative. “This year we will be hosting a press and trade conference on the wide range of

fresh produce we offer at our booth during the WOP Dubai event. The major players in the UAE fruit and vegetable sectors, including importers and distributors, will be updated on various varieties, selection and availability, quality and control, logistics and supply,” said Apofruit export salesman Renzo Balestri. “The reason why Apofruit targets the UAE market is because the European and Italian markets are mostly saturated. The decision to export to the UAE is due first to the high income of the population, and therefore to greater spending capacity in the Gulf countries, but also to the fact that, in recent years, logistics have greatly improved,” he said.

“We started with some sea shipments to the Gulf region a few years ago, and now we ship 365 days a year, both by sea and by air. In the UAE, we are present in Carrefour. Other countries we export to include China, Taiwan, Malaysia, India, South Korea, UAE, Saudi Arabia and North Africa. We also export to North America and South America but with significantly lower numbers,” Renzo stated while explaining the presence of Apofruit in the Gulf region. “Our products differ from the others in terms of the brand, which is a guarantee of quality,

and the origin, Italian,” he added. The range of products we offer are the best in terms of flavour, ripeness and variety, with practical but elegant packaging that enhances the characteristics of strictly Italian produce, even in its colours. Solarelli produce comes from areas of Italy with the best production skills, where the Apofruit Italia cooperative works with its producers and its own handling facilities. The Solarelli range also includes Italian fruit and vegetables with PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) and PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status, in line with this policy of scrupulously selecting products to ensure that they maintain all their

traditional characteristics. The main fresh goods offered are: baby watermelons and melons, strawberries, peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, cherries, kiwis, pears and persimmons, seedless grapes, oranges, apples, tomatoes, carrots and many more. IA's Vanguard Award Selected Close-Spaced LEPA Installations Close-Spaced LEPA Installations: Saving Water and Energy and Increasing Yields, was selected in the Agriculture category of the Irrigation Association's new Vanguard Award. The Vanguard Award was established in 2017 to honor a team of individuals, companies, organizations or other group entities that have spearheaded or been involved with a completed, innovative installation project in the

irrigation industry. Close Spacing LEPA (Low Energy Precision Application) takes technology that began in the 1980's and adds product innovations which alter the application pattern. Then it reduces the spacing between the hose drops to 40 inches or less to distribute water over most of the soil surface. These LEPA systems gently deliver water from a height of 8 to 18 inches above the ground to combat wind drift and prevent evaporation loss. Conservation tillage practices further help prevent evaporation loss, and run-off by holding the water in the rows until the soil can absorb it. As a result, Close Spacing

LEPA achieves application efficiencies typically exceeding 95 percent.

Managed by the Group's agriculture business, ANGE's sustainability efforts at the oases ensure that almost 75% of natural resources are saved. The Group has reduced pesticide use from 140,000 litres per day to just 18,000 litres, and minimised wastage by re-using portions of trimmed leaves for livestock feed. Almost every part of fallen or trimmed date plants is re-used: trunks used for furniture and planters for flowers; and leaves being re-purposed into ropes, or used to create barasti fencing

and roofing for traditional buildings. Additionally, leaves are also up-cycled to create ornaments, baskets and furniture, preserving traditional Emirati handicraft techniques. Buti Al Naboodah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer: Commercial for ANGE commented: "Our passion to preserve Emirati culture is demonstrated throughout Al Naboodah Group Enterprises' operations, and we are proud to protect the culturally significant Al Ain Oases date plantations. We cultivate the land to pay homage to our heritage while ensuring this legacy for many future generations to come. Through these initiatives we seek to enhance the community we

SEED GROWING INDUSTRY SCALES UP ITS PRODUCTION TARGET FOR 2023

S

etting its targets to produce 1.5 million tons of certificated seeds by 2023, seed growing industry is now aiming for the sky. Production of certificated seeds increased by 560 percent from 145k tons in 2002 to 958k tons in 2016. Mr. Kamil Yilmaz, the President of Turkey Seed Growers Association (TURKTOB), with around 40 thousand members countrywide, stated “our industry's first target was to reach 1 million tons of certificated seeds in 2023.

Thanks to outstanding efforts of public and local seed growers, this target has been achieved earlier. With this proud achievement, we raised our target for seed production up to 1.5 million tons for 2023”. Underlining Turkey's major position as an exporter in strategic seed growing industry, Mr. Kamil Yilmaz, the President of TÜRKTOB added “There is a delusion claiming that 'Turkey is dependent on foreign sources for seeds and supplies all its seed needs from Israel'. On the

contrary, Turkey is now in a position to export seed plants to Israel. We sell seeds to 76 countries”. Stating the first countries we export the most seeds are Ukraine, Hungary, France, Romania and Russia, Mr. Yilmaz continued “Our seed export folded 8 times in the last 15 years and increased from USD 17,3 million in 2002 to USD 153,5 million. Our estimate target for 2017 is 10 percent growth, which I totally believe to achieve. We will be attending the most important international fair NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2017

A

growing focus on creating sustainable cities for healthier living environments - one of the main agendas under the sustainability theme of Expo 2020 Dubai - is attracting multibillion-dollar investments in urban landscaping and horticulture across the UAE and the Middle East. for natural greenery, while Abu Dhabi has invested AED 23 million for landscaping projects in the UAE capital. To meet the increasing demands in the sector, International Plants Expo Middle East (IPM Dubai), under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Airports, jointly organized by Messe Essen GmbH and planetfair Dubai LLC, will open its 12 edition (IPM Dubai 2017) to welcome a wide range of the latest market innovations and industry professionals in floriculture, horticulture, urban landscaping and architecture, among other industry-related products and services. The three-day trade show will be simultaneously held with the World of Perishables (WOP) exhibition at the Dubai World Trade Centre from December 5 to 7, 2017. The region's only dedicated plant fair has been growing steadily with a rising number of exhibitors and visitors each year. IPM Dubai 2016 reported a record participation of about 110 exhibitors from 24 countries and 3,890 trade visitors, soaring by 11 per cent from the previous year. Urban

planners worldwide insist that natural landscaping has become a necessity for bringing back biodiversity in cities through parks and other green open spaces. Mr. Oliver P. Kuhrt, CEO of Messe Essen GmbH, says: “People are becoming aware that the more natural greeneries they have around them, the healthier their lifestyles can be and urban planners and built environment developers are recognizing the value of these investments to create a more breathable and livable city. We are confident that IPM Dubai 2017 will attract more participants given the increasing segment of landscaping in building sustainable cities. Dubai, which will host Expo 2020, has been ramping up its investments in green spaces with plans to develop the largest public park in Dubailand stretching across 1.4 million square metres of land. Across the region, major cities and project developers are investing billions of dollars for the construction of parks and greener residential communities as well as commercial districts. The site situation is changing constantly due to the conversion and, as expected, is exerting positive effects on the quality of international trade fairs such as IPM ESSEN. We are looking forward to 2018," Oliver P. Kuhrt, CEO of Messe Essen, showed his satisfaction. Here is an overview of the most important changes:

Denmark in Hall 14 and the Grugahalle The old Hall 5, also known as the "Danes' Hall", will not be available on the occasion of IPM ESSEN in 2018. With its almost 100 exhibitors, Floradania will therefore occupy the temporary Hall 14 and the foyer of the Grugahalle. Poland and Spain Move into New Hall, France in the Galeria Again IPM ESSEN will profit from the conversion for the first time in 2018. Fair Hall 9 was completely demolished in the first construction phase and is being replaced by a new hall flooded with light (upon the conclusion of the third construction phase in the summer of 2018, it will be renamed Hall 6). The northern part will have been completed by the time of the fair. Thus, the Polish and Spanish joint booths will move back there NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2017

after guest appearances in Hall 7 in 2017. After the positive experiences at the last IPM ESSEN, the French national booth will remain in the Galeria. The Floristry area will remain in Hall 6, at the heart of the fair site. The old Hall 4 will no longer exist. The axis formed by Hall 3, the Galeria and Hall 7 will once more be occupied by horticultural technology. The consistent consolidation of this area of the range on offer already proved to be the right decision in 2017 and is to be retained in the future, too. Halls 1 and 2 will be occupied by plant exhibitors, as will parts of Hall 7 in addition to Halls 8 and 9. The nurseries will be accommodated in Halls 10, 11 and 12. In the future,

too, the visitors will find the Green City in Hall 1A in which the green associations, the competitions and the floristry shows as well as the creative shop situations of bloom's and g&v will be found again. Italian Exhibitors Present Themselves Individually For next year, firms and plant producers from Italy have decided not to be exhibitors together as until now but instead to be divided amongst the various fair halls according to the products. For 2019, there will be the option to be exhibitors together again. Hortivation in Hall 13 Under the creative management of Romeo Sommers, a green stylist and trendwatcher from

the Netherlands, hortivation will take place as a trend hotspot during IPM ESSEN for the first time. The entire temporary Hall 13 will show ideas and high-volume sales concepts for garden centres. Under the motto of "Family Garden", emphasis will be placed on innovative technology and the Outdoor Living area. New: Trainees Lounge in Hall 6.1 On the occasion of IPM ESSEN, the Trainees Lounge will be set up in Hall 6.1 for the first time in cooperation with the Working Group of German Young Gardeners. As an interactive meeting place, attention will focus on the subject of training and further education here.

ORGANIC FERTILIZER

IS THE BEST ORGANIC FERTILIZERS IN THE WORLD. IT IS TRUE Products of lake energy

T

he basis of the BioDeposit® products is sapropel (fresh water lakes bottom sediments) and peat. The term “sapropel” name derived from the Greek sapros and pelos - meaning putrid and silt, mud and was introduced in 1901 by German scientist Robert Lauterborn to describe the silts that accumulate over the millennia in clean fresh water lakes. Organic fertilisers traditionally consist of manure or humus compost and when applied to the soil contribute to the accelerated formation of

humus in the soil. Sapropel achieves the same but is 15-20 times more effective than these traditional products! Specific microorganisms and enzymes contained in the sapropel are able to revive "dead ground" reactivating soil functions and to give it highly fertile properties by forming humus. All new organic fertilizers and soil conditioners are generally biologically active substances and contain many nutrient elements. Sapropel varies from these other products by making available these elements in their raw natural balanced form, and has high levels of organic matter humification. Plants and

animals easily assimilate mobile forms of potassium, phosphorus, and hydrolyzable nitrogen, which sapropel is rich in. Sapropel is also rich in natural vitamins, contains carotene (provitamin A), B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, E, C, D, P and folic acid. Sapropel contains the largest quantity of amino acids (histidine, glutamic acid, glycine, valine, arginine, aspartic acid, alanine, serine, leucine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, lysine, methionine, threonine, cystine), enzymes (catalase, peroxidase, reductase, protease). ORGANIC FERTILIZER contain the widest variety of natural and biologically active materials that is not met in this range in any other product on the market. The results of tests carried out in Italy, Kenya, Cote de'Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Ghana and others, shown that the productivity of some crops after the use of BioDeposit® is increased by 200300%, for example: Cotton - 4,6 ton/ha, Coffee - 45 kg/tree. Biologically active components available in BioDeposit® products fruitfully influence soil for a long period of time (from 3 to 5 years). Agronomic crop that are grown on soils with BioDeposit® products are ecologically pure. Currently using BioDeposit® Technology can be produce two brand products: BioDeposit® Agro is a biologically active soil conditioner produced from natural ingredients: sapropelic colloid and active peat. It is highly recommended for use on depleted, saline and eroded soils with damaged structure and soils treated with chemical and mineral fertilizers for a long period of time. BioDeposit® Agro remains fertile in the ground for several years, so for annual plants it should be once in 3-4 years, with consumption about 1 ton per 1 hectare. BioDeposit ® Elixir is a sustainable, water soluble, biologically active plant growth enhancer produced from specially prepared peat. It is a black color concentrate that initiates plant growth and development. BioDeposit ® Elixir is a highly concentrated product, 1 litre of it should be diluted with 2000 liters of water before irrigation or spray. Elixir has no offensive odour and should be used 2 times per season with an interval of 14-15 days, with consumption about 300 ml per 1 NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2017

ROOTSTOCKS

LODDER OFFERS QUALITY ROOTSTOCKS

L

ODDER-ROOTSTOCKS was founded in 1958 as a nursery with a wide-range-production of rootstocks for fruit-trees, roses and ornamentals. Until now the specialization came more and more only to ROOTSTOCKS FOR FRUIT-TREES. QUALITY-ROOTSTOCKS – MADE IN GERMANY - are becoming more and more interesting/popular and well known also outside of Germany. The root-system of German FRUIT-TREEROOTSTOCKS is different, means better branched, to that of other countries. That makes regrowth in the fruit-tree-nursery easier even under not optimal conditions. ROOTSTOCKS for APPLES, PEARS, PLUMS, CHERRIES, PEACHES, APRICOTS and NECTARINES are the range of our production by tissue-culture/in-vitro, stool-beds, hardwood-cuttings and seedlings. For special needs also transplanted – to have an additional better rooting-system. Now LODDER-ROOTSTOCKS is in a better situation, since STEFFEN LODDER is managing the production; so ERHARD LODDER (managing director) NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2017

can take even more attention to the over worldwide customers and their needs. Storage from end of October until May or later for the Southern hemisphere is no problem in special temperature-controlled-facilities! The most important variety is during the last 25 years the Prunus GiSelA®-ROOTSTOCK-series – for halfsize trees, early cropping, large fruit-size and good productivity.

STALDREN® DRY DISINFECTANT POWDER NOW AVAILABLE IN THE MIDDLE EAST

S

TALDREN® - the effective dry disinfectant powder manufactured in Denmark by Jorenku A/S and exported to more than 60 countries worldwide now is available in Middle East markets where it is distributed by reputable partners. STALDREN® has been appreciated as an effective dry disinfectant powder for more than 25 years. It not only reduces moisture & ammonia levels but its active ingredient is effective against a broad range of harmful pathogens affecting poultry, dairy and equine health & productivity. STALDREN® contains no phosphorous, is pH neutral & non-corrosive and does not damage skin & membranes. It is safe to use throughout the production cycle. Using STALDREN® to improve hygiene is a preventive measure and its introduction in the Middle East region is most timely as governments increasingly restricts use of potentially immune causing antibiotics in animal production. Many broiler operations, e.g. in Brazil, extensively uses STALDREN® in their efforts to minimize Salmonella presence in bedding while at the same time greatly reduce foot pad damage stemming from ammonia presence and infections. This in turn results in less disease, mortality & treatment costs, and as an added benefit more NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2017

revenue can be realised from better quality chicken feet sales. In Layer (cage) houses where red mites often pose problems STALDREN® also can be used to dust the house, either weekly or bi-weekly. An added benefit carrying out dusting of the cages is that a degree of disinfection with residual effect occurs simultaneously. STALDREN® also is ideal for maintaining hygienic conditions in nest boxes. In dairy operations

STALDREN® is widely used to help reduce mastitis incidence and lame leg problems. Apart from being used in cow resting and traffic areas, it also is a very important aid in maintaining critical hygiene levels in hospital pens, and in calf pens both for individual and group housing. Healthy female calves are a very important pre-requisite for raising productive dairy cows in a timely & cost effective manner and the value of good hygiene cannot be overestimated.

IT NOT ONLY REDUCES MOISTURE & AMMONIA LEVELS BUT ITS ACTIVE INGREDIENT IS EFFECTIVE AGAINST A BROAD RANGE OF HARMFUL PATHOGENS AFFECTING POULTRY, DAIRY AND EQUINE HEALTH & PRODUCTIVITY

T

he third smallest country in the EU after Luxembourg and Malta, Cyprus' agricultural sector is small in comparison to its European neighbours. The success achieved in marketing and promoting halloumi cheese as an international brand demonstrates that the island can establish a unique identity for its products: the challenge now is to repeat this success with the island's other agricultural products such as olive oil, fruits and vegetables. Indeed, some 44 per cent of Cyprus' agricultural output derives from crop protection, which apart from the export products of potatoes, oranges, lemons, mandarins, grapefruit and grapes, also includes cereals which are a main source of fodder for the island's livestock farmers. According to a latest report, Cyprus' agricultural share of total domestic exports is around 13.4%, and it is quintessentially Mediterranean with health-promoting foods such as citrus fruit, vegetables, grapes and potatoes. As for processed agricultural goods, Cyprus' key exports are halloumi, fruit and vegetable juices and meats. The island's famous halloumi cheese has become one of the top export products for Cyprus. The country has a rich gastronomical history, and halloumi - with its rich flavour and particular texture - constitutes a cornerstone of Cypriot cuisine. Aquaculture products are the third most important produce in Cyprus, in terms of export value. Specifically, these products are sea bass and sea bream and approximately 65% of the total national production is exported to markets in Middle Eastern countries and the USA. The aquaculture sector represents about 75-80% both in terms of volume and value of the total national fisheries production, and the total national aquaculture value for 2015 reached Euro 39.2 million . The traditional markets for Cypriot citrus products have been Russia and the United Kingdom, both enthusiastic consumers of oranges, tangerines and mandora, a cross between a mandarin and an orange. Agricultural exports to the EU constitute around 64.2%, while other European countries 16.7% and Asia 16.2%.
