Egyptian Government pledges subsidies to help agricultural export to the MEA region Egyptian exports to the UAE increased from USD 1.126bn in the first half of 2016, to USD 1.204bn during the same period in 2017 according to Egypt Today registering a 7 per cent increase in growth. Since then, trade relations between the countries have further progressed as Egypt looks to increase the number of companies exporting to the UAE through a new subsidy strategy recently laid out by the Egyptian Government aimed at boosting trade between the two countries. Supplementing this goal of increasing exports to the MEA region, the Egyptian Export Development Authority (EDA) has confirmed a partnership with AgraME 2019, the Middle East and Africa's most important exhibition for Agriculture, Aquaculture and Animal Health, which will offer businesses based in Egypt subsidies of up to 50 per cent of the total cost of participating at the exhibition. Egyptian suppliers and manufacturers can now showcase their products, machinery, equipment and services to the local and international visitor base which the event attracts with significant financial support and cost saving opportunities. Commenting on the partnership, May Helmy, Project Manager at the Egypt Export Development Authority said, ''The EDA will provide subsidies for Egyptian companies to exhibit at AgraME 2019 in Dubai. The subsidy ratio is determined according to the company's exports for the year 2017.'' 4

''We want to help as many Egyptian companies as possible increase their export across Middle East and Africa. The show already attracts Egyptian suppliers of Aquaculture, Crop Farming, Animal Farming and Animal Health who manage to strike a significant amount of business at the show every year. We are excited to be supporting this export initiative to help grow agricultural export across the region'' added Helmy. Under the patronage of the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, AgraME will take place from the 5 - 7 March 2019 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, Dubai, UAE. As the longest running show in the Middle East and Africa, AgraME welcomes government buyers, distributors, agents, and farm owners from across the Middle East and Africa.

Lowe's Uses HydroPoint Smart Irrigation and IoT to Reduce Water Use, Carbon Footprint HydroPoint, AT&T, and Lowe's released a new case study that shows the benefits of installing smart irrigation and the Internet of Things (IoT) at nearly 1,000 stores. Lowe's started looking for more sustainable solutions, in an effort to increase its efficiency while reducing its environmental impact. The company chose smart irrigation systems from HydroPoint that connect through the AT&T IoT platform. The study found that Lowe's was able to reduce its annual water use by about 650 million gallons, saving Lowe's an estimated $5 million. The reduced usage also requires less water treatment and pumping, which reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by about 750 metric tons, the equivalent of burning 84,000 gallons of gasoline.
SPACE 2018: Satisfying turnout and visitors from 121 countries worldwide SPACE 2018 took place from 11 to 14 September at ParcExpo Rennes exhibition centre. Attendance levels were high, the weather was superb and once more, the quality of the show was excellent. The 6
GULF AGRICULTURE
four-day event underlined the show's international standing. It also served to highlight the strength of the agricultural industry in Northwest France. This month, the region played host to both the “Terre de Jim French Young Farmers show and the SPACE exhibition, one of the leading international events for livestock professionals. This year was the 32nd time that SPACE opened its doors to the industry. This time around, there were 1,410 exhibitors from 42 different countries and a total of 108,347 delegates from 121 countries around the world. In terms of French visitor numbers, there was a slight downturn on last year (6.65%), but all things considered, attendance was satisfactory. This small dip was mainly due to the fact that corn silage harvesting took place a fortnight earlier than expected this year and therefore clashed with the show. International attendance was up slightly (by 2.8%), showing how SPACE has unique international appeal, despite the market being particularly competitive this year. High attendance levels and the quality of this year's show were evidence of the capability and commitment of industry professionals to continually adapt and evolve in response to the needs and expectations of society. The success of SPACE 2018 also reminds us how essential it is for all industry sectors to work together. This is crucial for maintaining and promoting the agricultural industry in the long-term and responding to demands for increasingly high levels of safety in livestock feeding.
The next SPACE exhibition will take place from Tuesday 10 to Friday 13 September 2019.
Palsgaard takes another step towards carbonneutrality Emulsifier specialist Palsgaard has taken another step towards worldwide carbon-neutral production. The company has activated 840 solar panels at its Dutch factory, which is now completely carbon-neutral. The move is another important landmark for the company as it works to eliminate its carbon footprint at all global production sites by 2020. Last year Palsgaard became the first industrial company in the country to achieve CO2neutrality at its Mexican plant. And its largest site, in Denmark, was declared carbonneutral in 2015 after it reduced emissions by 16,000 tons. The company, known as the inventor of the modern emulsifier, has been actively working to reduce its carbon footprint since 2010. It has introduced heat recovery and insulation techniques, converted from heavy fuel oil to biogas, and used renewable sources of energy such as wind and solar power. In Denmark it has also introduced its own straw-fired central heating systems. The Netherlands factory has been running solely on renewable energy since the start of the year, and the new solar panels further reduce its need for external sources of electricity. Had the company continued to use fossil fuels, CO2 emissions could have reached 1,322,000 kg per year _ the same as the amount produced by 165 Dutch households. NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2018

Early Sales 2020 New Varieties Available Now From PanAmerican Seed On October 1, PanAmerican Seed released a select group of new 2020 introductions for sale. This provides growers a chance to purchase larger quantities and sell the latest seed genetics during the 2019 spring season rather than only offering small quantities for sampling. This early-release timeline closes the loop on the company's strategy to trial with growers before introduction to confirm performance and encourages growers to use the best new varieties a year in advance of traditional availability timelines. The early sales list

includes varieties from all of PanAmerican Seed's product categories: Annuals, Perennials, Edibles, Cut Flowers and Potted Plants. From cool- to warm-season varieties, distributors can sell seed or provide trial seeds to their greenhouse customers. The timing is also ideal as the main production period for early-spring and spring crops is just starting in many markets. Items like Spreading Petunia Easy Wave® Lavender Sky Blue, Spreading Pansy Cool Wave® Strawberry Swirl, Osteospermum Akila® Sunset Shades, and Salvia Salvatore do not require long days, so winter and early-spring production is not an issue.
“It is important that our customers have access to our newest genetics as soon as we have the seed in stock, along with relevant growing information and marketing support. We are excited to offer 31 new varieties a year ahead of the traditional industry timelines,” says Scott Rusch, Product Development Director at PanAmerican Seed. “The improvements that our breeders, product managers and trial collaborators have seen for the last several years solve key grower challenges. We also have several innovative new products that will help growers generate interest with consumers and landscapers.”

Foliar Fertilizer Market Witnessing Increasing Penetration of Nitrogenbased Variants; Global Demand to Surpass 3 Million Metric Tons by 2028 Foliar fertilizers are steadily gaining ground in the agriculture industry as an effective multifaceted solution to enhance plant vitals. Increasing importance of crop nutrition, backed by the rising government initiatives continues to influence the demand for foliar fertilizers. Sales of foliar fertilizers are expected to increase on the back of the increasing demand for agricultural produce worldwide. These insights are according to a new study on foliar fertilizer market by Fact.MR. According to the research, demand for foliar fertilizer is projected to expand at a CAGR of 4% with respect to volume during the period of forecast, 2018-2028. Steady demand for foliar fertilizer is likely to translate into significant sales volumes crossing 3,400,000 metric tons by the end of 2028. Effective training programs provided by the governments regarding the use of foliar fertilizer continues to remain instrumental in driving the
foliar fertilizer sales worldwide. Moreover, subsidy provisions by governments in fertilizer space has translated into increased farmer confidence in using the foliar fertilizer, says the study. For instance, the government of India has declared a subsidy of around US$ 10,000 Mn in 2018 encouraging the farmers to improve the agricultural yield. Rising awareness regarding benefits of foliar fertilizer is expected to contribute to the growing sales volumes of the product in the coming years. Foliar fertilizer sales with nitrogen composition are likely to be on an upswing on the back of the growing demand for the nutrient in crop rejuvenation. Nitrogen, a key element in crop health, facilitates efficient photosynthesis, protein production, and overall plant physiology. Fact.MR report opines that sales volume of foliar fertilizer with nitrogen composition is estimated to cross 1,800,000 metric tons by 2019 end. On the contrary, the demand for potassium foliar fertilizer is projected to grow at a relatively rapid pace in the light of high pest and disease resistance and fruit quality enhancing properties. Potassium foliar fertilizer also facilitates rapid formation and movement of sugars, starches, and oils in crops, in turn, enhancing the plant nutrition.

Climate-Smart Agriculture key to support long-term growth of Near East and North Africa countries The Near East and North Africa (NENA) region faces numerous common challenges to achieving improved food security, nutrition and inclusive agricultural development. Rapid population growth, increasing urbanization, low growth in food production, as well as scarce and fragile natural resources and the threat of climate change have been compounding the situation. Climate change is having a significant impact on agricultural production around the region, threatening food security, hampering efforts to eradicate poverty and putting the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at risk. In light of this, the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) are organizing a regional workshop, with the support of the Government of Sudan, to discuss innovative approaches to mitigate the effects of climate change on agriculture and to introduce the climate-smart agriculture approach to countries of the region. “This is the first workshop on climate-smart agriculture specific to our region. We are grateful for the support provided by the Government of Sudan to host this important workshop. Indeed, Sudan is and will continue to be highly affected by the influence of climate change on agriculture. As such, we welcome its leadership in addressing this topic that is essential for the

The garden can procure a complete wellbeing, not only producing fruits but also oxygen, biodiversity, scents and feelings, increasing the liveability of spaces and their perception; thus enhancing places with elements not only able to “beautify them”, but also make them functional in terms of environment and social impact, becoming a fruitful place for the mind and its wellbeing. Starting from this ability of green places to change the perception of spaces and make them more liveable, Radicepura Garden Festival announces the call for ideas 2019, inviting artists, designers, engineers, agronomists and botanists to participate to the second edition of the festival to be held in Giarre from April through to November 2019, exploring the “PRODUCTIVE GARDENS” theme. The international competition is open to under 36 to create 10 gardens, in areas of 30 to 50 square meters, working on the proposed theme. The gardens will be created inside Radicepura, the botanical park situated in Giarre (Catania), between Mount Etna and the Ionic Sea. They will communicate with art works and other gardens created by famous international garden designers. Participants will have the opportunity to choose the plants from Piante Faro greenhouses and cultivations, which means a production of over 800 species and more than 5,000 varieties
of exotic, succulent and ornamental plants, rare trees, unique majestic thousand year old specimens.
Championing the Cause: Youths in Agriculture Africa as a continent has reported a significant rate in agriculture; Agriculture is one of the sectors on the continents with a reasonably high level of revenue from export activities. Export commodities such as Cocoa, coffee, Timber, cashew and maize are some widely known produce that earn the continent much foreign exchange revenue. Youths over Africa vehemently complain and protest against lack of unemployment, considering 'white colour jobs' and 'blue colour jobs' as the only jobs in Africa. Trend in agricultural activity inclusion has focused on rural inhabitants with older folks dominating in many countries across the continent, denoting that the younger folks in these rural areas, together with people from the urban centers are not quite interested in this sector. It is no surprise that even the unemployed who are surrounded with agricultural opportunities refuse to see them, even if they do, they are reluctant or do not take advantage of them. Most youths, when asked to campaign for agriculture or raise a voice to agriculture will not hesitate to do it, but when asked to engage in farming, they will definitely not hesitate to say no. Same analogy applies to most agricultural students, if you ask them about their ambition, they may mention International Agricultural Scientist, a Researcher, an Agricultural Officer, a Banker or a Government Servant, a handful will dare say they want to be farmers. F
rom January 22 to 25, 2019, the honourable role as the partner country of the world's leading fair for the green sector will be bestowed on Belgium as an important exhibitor nation at IPM ESSEN. The countries Germany and Belgium are united with each other not only by the similarity of both flags. The European neighbours also look back on a long horticultural tradition. The expertise which connects both partner countries with each other will be emphasised under the motto "Rooted in Craftsmanship Together". In addition to the Opening Event and the Exhibitors Evening, the Belgians will provide particular highlights on the fair stage in Essen with numerous black-

yellow-and-red activities. When IPM ESSEN started in 1982, Belgian exhibitors (the first from outside Germany) set out for Essen with a small but fine team. Since then, the sectoral meeting place has grown permanently and, with it, also the number of Belgian exhibitors who have long since recognised the significance of the world's leading fair as an important presentation platform. Oliver P. Kuhrt, CEO of Messe Essen: "We are very proud of having won over Belgium as the partner country of IPM ESSEN 2019. Belgian horticulture is very efficient. Around 70 exhibitors will show their innovations and trends. We would like to give them the attention which they deserve.
And what better place for this than IPM ESSEN where the entire worldwide horticultural sector meets up every year?" Koen Vanswijgenhoven, Regional Manager for Germany of the Flanders' Agricultural Marketing Board (VLAM), is also convinced about the cooperation and sees in it the chance to consolidate the horticultural relationship between Belgium and Germany even further: "Belgium has put its role as the partner country of IPM ESSEN 2019 under the motto 'Rooted in Craftsmanship Together'. Let's use the topclass stage in Essen in order to live this slogan and to strengthen the roots of our friendly and partnership-based togetherness." NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2018

Belgium as the Export Frontrunner Not only VLAM but also the Belgian Nurserymen and Growers Federation (AVBS) are behind the partner country cooperation. At IPM ESSEN 2019, the Belgian ornamental plant exhibitors will present themselves with a large joint booth in Hall 2. The azalea will play a prominent role in this respect. In this field, Belgium is the frontrunner worldwide: 80 percent of the European azalea production originates from Flanders. 30 million units of this speciality are exported every year. In 2010, the "Gentse Azalea" (Ghent Azalea) was also the first European ornamental plant product to receive the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) label.
Belgium shows its particular eagerness to export also as far as the tree nursery products are concerned. The tree nurseries will be represented in the new Halls 6 and 8. New buxus varieties which are resistant to the Cylindrocladium fungus will be introduced in an Info Event. In addition, the "Proefcentrum voor Sierteelt" (PCS - Ornamental Plant Research) will report on new findings with regard to combatting the box tree moth. Horticulture Forum, Receptions and Booth Activities And attention traditionally focuses on the partner country in the International Horticulture Forum too. In 2019, Belgium
will take up the subject of "Sustainability in the Horticulture of the Future". The speakers will include highranking experts from the "Ornamental Plant Cultivation Technopool" which the two Belgian research institutes PCS and the "Instituut voor Landbouw-, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek" (ILVO Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food) founded together with the Ghent University and the University College Ghent. Moreover, various international receptions are planned and, for example, the European Nurserystock Association (ENA) will visit the booth of the Belgians on these occasions.
LODDER OFFERS QUALITY ROOTSTOCKS LODDER-ROOTSTOCKS was founded in 1958 as a nursery with a wide-range-production of rootstocks for fruit-trees, roses and ornamentals. Until now the specialization came more and more only to ROOTSTOCKS FOR FRUIT-TREES. QUALITY-ROOTSTOCKS - MADE IN GERMANY - are becoming more and more interesting/popular and well known also outside of Germany. The root-system of German FRUIT-TREEROOTSTOCKS is different, means better branched, to that of other countries. That makes regrowth in the fruit-tree-nursery easier even under not optimal conditions. ROOTSTOCKS for APPLES, PEARS, PLUMS, CHERRIES, PEACHES, APRICOTS and NECTARINES are the range of our production by tissue-culture/in-vitro, stool-beds, hardwood-cuttings and seedlings. For special needs also transplanted - to have an additional better rooting-system. Now LODDER-ROOTSTOCKS is in a better situation, since STEFFEN LODDER is managing the production; so ERHARD LODDER (managing director) can take even more attention to the over worldwide customers and their needs. Storage from end of October until May or later for the Southern hemisphere is no problem in special temperature-controlled-facilities! The most important variety is during the last 25 years the Prunus GiSelAÂŽ-ROOTSTOCK-series - for halfsize trees, early cropping, large fruit-size and good productivity.

most significant events in the trade show landscape. "Agricultural machinery is entering the collective imagination - comments the president of FederUnacoma Alessandro Malavolti - as a symbol of progress and civilization" The 43rd edition of EIMA International, the review of agricultural machinery organized by FederUnacoma at the Bologna exhibition centre, ended with extraordinary numbers. Visitors reached the figure of 317 thousand, an increase of 11% compared to the result of the last edition (2016), which had already set a historical record for this event, which takes a leading role not only in the agricultural machinery sector but in the general exhibition scene, worldwide. The number of foreign operators also increased - over 50 thousand with an increase of 15% compared to the last edition - from 150 countries, for an event that saw the participation of 1,950
exhibiting industries and occupied a gross surface area of 375 thousand square metres. "It is a great success for our Federation and for the Bologna Fair - declared the President of FederUnacoma Alessandro Malavolti - but above all for the agricultural machinery industries, a sector that surprises for its technological level, while it enters the collective imagination as a symbol of progress and civilization". "These machines are increasingly powerful and at the same time increasingly refined and sensitive to the environment and to safety, and they attract a crowd of young people, never as numerous as in this edition". agricultural vehicles, known as "Mother Regulation", have forced the ministry to issue several clarification circulars. During a conference on the subject, organized by FederUnacoma as part of EIMA, the aspects that have caused perplexity between manufacturers and users have been addressed (and clarified). The legislation in question, regulation 167 of 2013, in force since last January, is mandatory for all tractors. But for trailers and "interchangeable towed equipment", the obligation applies only to those destined abroad. If they are to circulate only in the country of production, the manufacturer can continue to comply with national legislation. "It is a choice made by the manufacturer after evaluating the pros and cons" explains Lorenzo Iuliano, of the technical service of FederUnacoma and one of the speakers of the conference. "To comply with the Mother Regulation, the equipment must meet more stringent criteria, which raise costs. However, on the other NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2018
hand, they can have a higher performance and, of course, they can circulate throughout the EU". The application of the new legislation to trailers and "interchangeable towed equipment" is one of the critical points highlighted during the conference. The legislation requires very reliable technology with regard to the braking system. But what happens when a farmer wants to connect an old trailer to a new generation tractor? "Extensions were granted both in Europe and in Italy", explains Iuliano, "but they will expire in 2024. However, they allow the use of connecting technologies, a bit like what happens when you go abroad with electrical outlets. But it is important to know that a new trailer or towed equipment can not be connected to an old tractor. While you can do the opposite: a tractor that complies with the Mother Regulation can tow a trailer that mounts the old braking system". The next edition of EIMA will be held in Bologna from 11 to 15 November 2020. GULF AGRICULTURE

PROTECTIVE SCREEN
“NET-HOUSE”: ARRIGONI BRINGS INNOVATION TO EIMA 2018
A
RRIGONI S.p.A., a leading designer and manufacturer of protective screens for agriculture, exhibited at EIMA 2018 with a number of big innovations. First and foremost, it showcased the use of ARRIGONI screens to create net-houses, innovative growing structures that provide just the right halfway solution between open field and greenhouse growing. “Because of the New Delhi virus, open field crops without insect protection are not possible”, explains ARRIGONI agronomist Giuseppe Netti, “with the need to guard against aphids, whitefly and thrip in particular. There are two possible solutions: one option is growing in plastic film greenhouses with AIR PLUS range insect screens, with the sides closed in autumn, winter and spring. However, the drawback is that in areas with a

Mediterranean climate, on sunny days in spring and autumn the temperature peaks inside greenhouses are too high.” “The second solution”, Mr Netti continues, “is growing in lightweight structures entirely covered with insect screens (which we call 'net-houses'), and not only during the summer. Thanks to the favourable climate created underneath the structure, in this case crops can be grown in a protected environment without too much change in temperatures. What's more, in autumn the microclimate is still more favourable than in the open field.” Apart from the advantage of being able to grow crops with total protection against whitefly, aphids, bollworm and other insect pests, net-houses constructed using ARRIGONI insect screens offer additional benefits: more vigorous plants with better resistance to some diseases; conditions unfavourable to the spread of
fungal diseases (drier environment with lower relative humidity); possibility of starting organic and low environmental impact growing operations; higher yield thanks to more suitable microclimate than in greenhouses; water saving as plants are not exposed to excessive evapotranspiration; and much lower installation cost than a steel structure with plastic films. The novelties do not end here, since the new website is also on-line, with two main sections, “Agrotextiles” and “Techtextiles”, providing users with full information about these two application families. The graphics have also been completely updated to be more functional and provide a user-friendly browsing experience available from anywhere, including from mobile devices.
