MINISTRY OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENVIRONMENT TO COOPERATE WITH EMIRATES DEVELOPMENT BANK IN FINANCING MODERN AGRICULTURAL VENTURES

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and Emirates Development Bank (EDB), the key financial engine of the UAE’s economic diversification and industrial transformation agenda, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up a scheme to offer finance solutions to modern agricultural SMEs and start-ups in a bid to contribute to the UAE’s

sustainable economic development and food security – one of EDB’s five priority sectors that play a vital role in strengthening the economic resilience and competitiveness of the UAE.

The agreement was signed by His Excellency Eng Mohammed Mousa Alameeri, Assistant Undersecretary for the Food Diversity Sector at MOCCAE, and Mr Ahmed Mohamed Al Naqbi, CEO of EDB.

The MoU aligns with MOCCAE’s endeavors to scale up local agricultural production to increase the sector’s role in strengthening the country’s food security. It is also in line with EDB’s role under the umbrella of the comprehensive vision for the national economy

that seeks to position the country as a global hub for industry, advanced technology, and the industries of future, while guaranteeing its industrial, food, and technological security.

His Excellency Eng Alameeri said: “Improving local agricultural production through promoting the adoption of modern agriculture is a priority for MOCCAE in line with its strategy to enhance food security. The agreement with EDB falls within the Ministry’s efforts to join forces with strategic partners to explore opportunities that drive agricultural and fisheries production and launch appropriate financing schemes to

attract entrepreneurs.”

Under the agreement, the two parties will identify collaboration opportunities in food security and supporting SMEs and start-ups. EDB will offer financing solutions to modern agricultural businesses, while MOCCAE will host regular seminars and introductory courses on modern agricultural methods and technologies, highlighting their importance for food security and the sustainability of the sector.

PINDUODUO CHAMPIONS "TECH FOR AGRI" TO SPEARHEAD AGRICULTURAL MODERNIZATION

Pinduoduo, the internet platform that connects millions of farmers and consumers directly through its interactive e-commerce platform, continues to spearhead its “Tech for Agri” effort in using technology to drive agricultural modernization.

Since its beginnings as an online fresh produce retailer, Pinduoduo has identified technology as the key to driving efficiency gains and boosting farmer incomes. The company has made its “Tech for Agri” vision a core priority, with a focus on increasing market accessibility through its e-commerce platform, improving digital inclusion and literacy through tailor-made online training programs, and fostering innovation to deliver a productivity leapfrog by promoting agritech solutions and horticultural breakthroughs.

ELECTRONIC MAGIC FLOWER DEPLOYED TO IMPROVE QUALITY AND REDUCE WASTE

In an industry estimated to be worth up to 9 billion US Dollars a year, where presentation is everything, offering the highest quality flowers possible and minimizing waste should be at the forefront of any operation. These are the challenges facing the global cut flower industry during all stages of processing and handling from the grower to the consumer.

To analyse where impacts and temperature fluctuations occur, both within international supply chains and home delivery networks, UK-based MM Flowers turned to a data logger typically used in the fresh produce industry. The data captured gives the team an opportunity to test understand exactly where problems occur and then develop mitigation methods and

remedial procedures to reduce waste and improve the quality of the flowers.

Developed by UK-based crop quality specialists Martin Lishman Ltd, ImpacTrack is a shock sensing data logger that sits inside dummy produce shapes designed to replicate the movement characteristics of fresh produce during handling and transport.

Using advanced 3D printing technology, Martin Lishman’s in-house design team can create virtually any shape of fresh produce that requires monitoring. “I discovered the ImpacTrack during my PhD where the device was placed into a 3D-printed electronic parsnip, which was used to identify destructive processes that cause damage to roots during post-harvest processing”, explains Technical & Quality Developer of MM Flowers, David Booth. “I could see its value for the cut flower market, so I worked with Martin Lishman to create what we have dubbed the Magic Flower”.

“Designed to be the same size and shape as a premium-quality rose and complete with interchangeable stem length, the Magic Flower is placed in a bouquet for shipping. Supply chain challenges can cause suboptimal transit conditions, so monitoring temperature and impacts during transit is key to identifying opportunities to improve the quality of our flowers”, adds David.

9,000 KM DRIVE: A CALL FOR MIDDLE EASTERN AGROTECH STARTUPS

Bruce Gurfein, a serial UAE entrepreneur has successfully completed the first in modern history 9,000 km road trip across six countries: the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain, Palestine, and Israel. The trip promotes the launch of Future Gig, a UAEbased agrotech startup accelerator.

From Dubai to Jerusalem via Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Palestine, and Israel it took 38 hours of five days driving a Nissan Armada, covering more than 3,580 km with stops in major cities. During the 20-day journey, Bruce Gurfein and his trip partner Joe Koen have been meeting investors, land owners, business partners, and innovators in food technologies and desert agriculture to create a joint platform that would allow startups to share data, exchange experience, test products and gain market access, with a mission to ensure a shift towards sustainability in the region. The road back to the UAE was routed through Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain and was completed in six days.

The World Bank’s data shows that in 2020, the

Middle East region’s share of the world’s acute food insecurity was 20%, which is disproportionately high considering its 6% share of the population.

It is vital that the region’s wealthiest join forces to address this challenge. The global food and agriculture industry is valued at over $8 trillion and makes up for more than 10% of the global GDP. There are tremendous opportunities for innovation and technology in these industries – for example, in Israel alone, investments in foodtech have increased from $53 million in 2015 to $866 million in 2021, according to IVCMEITAR Israeli Tech Review 2021 Report.

“Expanding Investments in the region and leveraging the UAE as a neutral center can create a superpower that will provide food security and help build a better future for our families and planet. Peace is not just a word, and it doesn’t come with two signatures; it comes with a wholehearted embrace, via interpersonal relations being built. After a period of design and realisation, the new production location was officially opened by councillor Jan Hazen of Uithoorn and Arthur Koekkoek. PRODUCING HYDROGEN PEROXIDE 'ON DEMAND' WITH THE HPGEN

Royal Brinkman, together with HPNow, is introducing the HPGen generator. With the HPGen™ generators, growers produce Peroxide UltraPure™ themselves on-site at the nursery. This ultra-pure form of hydrogen peroxide can be fed directly into the grower's irrigation system. This makes it easy to keep the irrigation system clean during cultivation and gives the crops a boost: hydrogen peroxide breaks down into pure water and oxygen, leading to more dissolved oxygen in the water.

Making your own hydrogen peroxide at the nursery; it is now possible with the HPGen

generator. It produces Peroxide UltraPure on the spot. Water, air and electricity are the only ingredients needed to generate hydrogen peroxide in safe concentrations, which can be used directly in the irrigation system. The hydrogen peroxide from the HPGen contains no heavy metals or other stabilizers and impurities. Peroxide UltraPure breaks down to pure water and oxygen, leaving no unwanted residual products.

INTERPOMA 2022: THE WORLD OF APPLES MEETS AGAIN IN BOLZANO, ITALY FROM NOVEMBER 17 TO 19

This year sees the 12° edition of Interpoma, and it will once again be a face-to-face event. The only international trade show for the entire apple industry is back in November at the Fiera Bolzano Exhibition Center (South Tyrol) in its regular two-yearly cycle. The main themes of Interpoma 2022 are digitalization and the sustainable use of resources in apple

production. Interpoma, the global reference point for apple growing, storage and marketing scheduled in Fiera Bolzano Exhibition Center (South Tyrol/Italy) from November 17 to 19, is looking ahead to the future this year with two highly topical themes: digitalization and the sustainable use of resources in the apple industry, the common threads running through the show’s entire events program, including Interpoma Congress and Interpoma Award.

Scheduled for November 17 and 18, the traditional international apple congress will focus on the industry’s innovations and

cutting-edge automated fruit-picking technology, with experts from all over the world contributing to the debate. ICL JOINS FORCES WITH PLANTARCBIO TO BOOST CROP YIELDS

ICL, a leading global specialty minerals company, and

ag-biotech company PlantArcBio, Ltd. announced the development of a novel bio-stimulant technology platform, which will improve crop yields while having minimal impact on the environment. The platform successfully uses of RNAi technology to maximize a plant's natural yield increase mechanisms, without any genetic modification, and was the result of a multi-year research collaboration between the two companies.

In early-stage canola field trials, the platform has significantly increased seed weight per hectare for canola crops, and ICL and PlantArcBio are planning larger-scale field trials in 2022. These will include testing the new technology platform using both commercial sprayers and

standard farming practices.

Greenhouse trials for soybeans and rice are already in progress, with early results showing good potential.

"The use of novel biostimulants based on RNAi technology helps promote sustainability, by reducing the use of chemicals in agriculture," explained Hadar Sutovsky, vice president of External Innovation and general manager of ICL Planet. UAE BEEF IMPORTERS PARTICIPATE IN A TRADE MISSION TO SPAIN ORGANIZED BY PROVACUNO

Provacuno (Provacuno, Madrid, Spain), a Spanish beef interprofessional association, organized a delegation of top UAE beef importers to visit several Spanish plants and farms as part of its Wonderful Beef 2.0 campaign as a trade mission. Participants learned about the safety and quality of EU/ Spanish beef, which follows a strict and safe European production model.

Five UAE Beef importers - namely Excellence Meats LLC, Hope Gourmet,

Parker Migliorini International Food Trading LLC, Sunlife General Trading LLC and Unique Seven Star General Trading LLC – participated in a 4-day trade mission which was conducted in Spain. On the first day, the group of UAE importers travelled to a renowned cattle farm, which stands out at the national level for being one of the largest producers of calves born and raised on its own farms through the development of homogeneous lines in breeds, sexes, conformations, and fat. The participants learned about Spanish Beef, which emphasized productive capacity and extensive control from the source to create a recognized quality meat. This farm also selects specimens with exceptional characteristics from the “Aquitaine Blonda cattle breed” and are given special care in the breeding process. On the second day, the UAE participants travelled to Buñol, Valencia and toured a massive 55,000

square meter Slaughterhouse facility in Buñol (Valencia). This facility has a slaughter line for up to 100 animals per hour, a cutting plant and veal with a capacity of 130 tons per day, a chamber of meat products to produce snacks, minced meat, and burgers. They also have a massive cool storage center of fresh and frozen beef products, at a capacity of forty thousand cubic meters.

The third day of the mission involved a trip to Barcelona, where the participants were treated to a tour of one of Spain’s most long-standing beef production organizations in Barcelona, with a history dating back over 100 years. Figs, the first cultivated plants by humans Archaeologists have found subfossil figs, in the Jordan Valley, dating back to over 11,000 years ago. This finding strongly suggests that fig

trees were the first proof of agriculture and occurred at least 1000 years before traditional crops like wheat were planted.

The Fig Tree is strictly native to the Middle East and its popularity and health benefits saw it transplanted by the Greeks and the Romans throughout Europe and in the 15th century to the Americas. The first Olympians consumed the nutritious fruit and were also presented with figs as medals.

It isn’t surprising that Figs are mentioned in ancient texts and hold a position of symbolism in many world religions representing fertility, peace and prosperity. They have been a culinary delicacy throughout time. These versatile “fruits” are not actually a traditional fruit, but rather a syconium with hundreds of inverted flowers each bearing a single seed in each sac.

Fig Tree Production in Modern Times Today, producers world-wide see the fig tree as an alternative crop with a bright future. The experience of this visionary Chilean farmer Martin Wielandt, from Doble Valle, is a modern example of

it’s cultivation merits. In an interview for El Agro on Radio Agriculture on January 4, 2020, he explains how he started with a small fig orchard in 2012, and now has a 21-hectare plot and more than 6,500 trees planted.

“In general, it is a simple plantation, it does not require great care and the trees are quite robust. On the other hand, it presents some challenges during harvest, as it lasts for 10 weeks, since the fruit matures in layers. This is a fundamental difference compared to other fruits. There are 670 plants per hectare and more specifically actual “flowering” trees, there are

EIMA INTERNATIONAL: THE "FOCUS" THEMES OF THE EVENT

As the event draws nearer, the calendar of events and in-depth themed discussions taking place at the Bologna exhibition centre, Italy over the five days from 9 to 13 November is taking shape. In these very days the offices of FederUnacoma, the association of agricultural machinery manufacturers that is the direct organiser of the event, are finetuning the full calendar of themed events that have always punctuated the five days of the exhibition. While it is still being worked out, the programme already appears to be rich in content, including press conferences, conventions, exhibitions in the demo area, seminars and workshops. In the foreground, political and economic issues relating to the development of the agromechanical sector, which are the focus of the press conference presenting the

event, scheduled for Tuesday 8 November. The meeting is an opportunity to take stock of developments in the world market for agricultural machinery, with an analysis of possible short and medium-term trends. Political and economic scenarios will be discussed again on Wednesday 9 November, with geopolitical analyst Dario Fabbri opening a window on the military conflict between Ukraine and Russia, and the consequences for the agricultural sector and the agromechanical industry. GROWTECH EXPO WILL OPEN ITS DOORS FOR THE 21 ST TIME

Growtech,

the world's most important and largest greenhouse agriculture sector expo, will bring together global agriculture professionals for trade and export at Antalya Anfaş Expo Center on November 23 - 26 this year.

Stating that they brought together 510 exhibitors from 25 countries and 53.640 international agricultural professionals from 125 countries under one roof in 2021, Growtech Expo Director Engin Er stated that the preparations for 2022 Growtech continue. For 4 days, events where the future of the

agricultural sector, which is more important than the other, will be discussed in addition to trade, will be held at Growtech for exhibitors and visitors.

The heart of the world's agriculture will beat at Growtech

Making important statements regarding the Growtech Expo, Engin Er said, “Every year, we host both international and national agriculture professionals at the expo as exhibitors and visitors. Universities met at Growtech campus event Reminding that Growtech, the world's most important greenhouse agriculture industry expo, carried out an important social responsibility

project before the expo with the 'Growtech on Campus' event organized in cooperation with Akdeniz University, Engin Er said that they guided university students in career planning with the event held on May 25.

Giving information about the event held at Akdeniz University Faculty of Agriculture, Growtech Expo Director Engin Er said that they offer an important opportunity for businesses in the agricultural sector to meet the students of the Faculty of Agriculture and bring them into the sector.

Expressing that the agriculture sector needs educated and equipped human resources, Er said, “The Growtech Campus event provided an opportunity for students to benefit from different and professional perspectives, to have the chance to look at their careers from the outside, and to direct their lives professionally. This event was planned to enable

students to learn job application processes, manage job interviews, get to know companies and make conscious choices in order to be evaluated in the agricultural sector, which needs qualified human resources, and it will become traditional from now on.”

SPACE 2022: A FOCUS ON CLIMATE AND YOUTH

SPACE took place from 13 to 15 September in a very warm and positive atmosphere, marking its 35 th anniversary. Attendance was very high over the three days of this 36 th edition at the Rennes Exhibition Centre. The full scope of the livestock industry was represented, from cattle, pigs, goats and

sheep to poultry, rabbits and aquaculture, in a very positive and constructive ambience.

SPACE 2022 was extremely successful, with over 90,000 visitors (90,108, of whom 8,406 came from 120 different countries), and close to 1,200 exhibitors (of which 300 were international businesses and 250 were

taking part in SPACE for the first time).

The event recovered its full international dimension after two years during which travel by visitors from abroad was heavily restricted. Delegations from around the world came to meet exhibitors, visit farms and draw inspiration from our organisational models. Many contacts were established with delegations from West Africa (Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Benin, etc.), Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Morocco, Algeria, Vietnam, the Philippines and numerous European countries. Talks organised for the first time in partnership with Promosalons led to important business exchanges with top buyers from Colombia, Chile, India, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Morocco and Nigeria.

In a context marked by drought and the soaring price of energy and raw

materials, climate was the annual theme developed by the Espace for the Future. Through the numerous debates, conferences, products and equipment presented by exhibitors, SPACE 2022 provided an opportunity to show that agricultural stakeholders are already taking measures aimed at reducing the impact of livestock farming on the climate. The livestock industry provides solutions to face climate challenges, and SPACE was able to demonstrate this.

Innovations in the sector, rewarded with the Innov’Space label (36 winners this year), also highlighted the continuous progress achieved by the world of agriculture. The winners offered visitors new solutions for animal welfare, protecting the environment, health and safety and improving farmers’ working conditions.

One of the biggest new features of this year’s event was the first Youth Forum, a space for young people organised in collaboration with agricultural teaching networks and opened by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, Marc Fesneau, at the start of the Expo. This new space enabled young people to voice their visions for their future jobs. They could also

express their motivations and questions to Loïg Chesnais-Girard, President of the Brittany Region, who paid very close attention to their points of view.

SPACE is also unique for its capacity to host around 100 conferences each year, allowing all stakeholders in the agricultural sector to learn about and discuss

topical issues such as new technologies, solutions for reducing climate impact, establishing and selling farms, protein selfsufficiency, research into new fodder crops, CAP issues, etc.

Livestock presentations, with 550 cattle of 13 breeds and 150 sheep and goats of 11 breeds, provided a magnificent showcase for genetics and the breeders’ know-how. A special focus was placed on the Jersey dairy breed with more than 60 cattle on show and in competition. The European Jersey forum was held during the event and the World Jersey Cattle Bureau had the opportunity to discover SPACE’s unique position for livestock

breeders. The Blonde d’Aquitaine was the beef breed under the spotlight, with a national challenge that proved highly popular with 80 cattle on show. The champion of the Normande breed competition was voted supreme champion of SPACE 2022. This dimension as a genetic showcase and the high-level competitions and presentations are also what makes the Expo a driver for progress for livestock farmers.

For its anniversary, SPACE 2022 was the epitome of a professional, international and convivial trade show. Despite a difficult context, these three days have proved that with abundant and constructive dialogue, high attendance by visitors and

exhibitors and the expo’s very positive dynamic, 35 years after its first edition SPACE is an exceptional showcase for the livestock industry. A modern, constantly-evolving industry with a bright future and a resolve to feed society and meet its requirements. This positive energy and optimism inspire confidence in our farmers’ determination to carry out their jobs with conviction and to ensure our food sovereignty, while remaining in tune with their fellow citizens.
