Young designers are calling on you to find out: What makes a good young graduate? What makes a designer stand out? How bad are graphic designers from a sustainability point of view? Matt Bolton mmbolton@googlemail.com
It’s becoming a well renowned fact that breaking into the creative industry as a graphic designer is like trying to climb mount Everest in flip flops. It’s not the easiest task at hand, and now being faced with this monumental challenge you start to question what it is that gets you into the dream agency you’ve always wanted to work for?
What am I trying to achieve?
I’m emailing out to as many professional’s within the creative industry as I can to collect thoughts, ideas, methods, and opinions on what a graphic designer needs to learn to do to successfully function in the 21st century?
how hard can it be?

your thoughts will be greatly valued. I understand that the last thing on your mile long to do list would be to answer these questions. But, this is something that needs an opinion, and should be discussed. All the information will be valuable content to a 12page newspaper publication that will be printed to publicise and promote FdA Graphic Design for Communication course, and the LCC Faculty of Design at the end of the year degree show. It will also be used to be sent out to people wishing to know more about the college, course and graphic design.
This may not be something significant to an agency or freelance designers; but it is something that design agencies should be doing. Do you have to have a beard and or/glasses to be taken seriously as a graphic designer? How on earth does being good at art and drawing when you’re young help you become a designer? Is graphic design male dominated? What is considered good graphic design and why? Is graphic design a career for middle class people? It’s not what you know, it’s who you know – agree or disagree? Internships: Industry taking advantage of and exploiting young designers or opportunity of a lifetime for young designers? You decide. What is the point of learning specific technical skills when the technology is always updating? How bad are graphic designers from a sustainability point of view? How long after graduation is your design degree worth something? Is a working knowledge of Adobe CS all you really need to qualify as a graphic designer? What makes you think you should be allowed to do something as potentially dangerous as design?
If you’re too busy to get together or have a brief chat over the phone, please answer 1 or 2 questions from the list above. FREE muffin’s will be hand delivered (regarding you’re within zones 1-2 in London) with a personal thank you from myself. Just to proove just how valuable your opinions really are.
