2011 Season Preview
Year 3 under the Pickett regime looks to be the page turner The third season under head coach Donald Pickett looks to be the one where the Northwestern State Lady Demon softball team will turn the corner for greener pastures. After a 2010 campaign saw the team break even with a 27-27 record - 22 more wins than the previous season, that turnaround was the best in NCAA Division I softball last year. That's the kind of momentum the Lady Demons are hoping will carry over into the 2011 slate. Five position starters including all three starting pitchers return for the still young Lady Demon squad. The roster consists of just three seniors, three juniors, four sophomores, and eight freshmen. Sam Roberts earned All-SLC honors last year. Headlining the returners is junior first baseman Samantha Roberts who has been selected as a preseason All- Southland Conference honoree. Roberts, who earned third team AllSLC honors in 2010 as a sophomore, garnered the Triple Crown batting titles last year - leading the team in hitting (.333), home runs (5), and RBIs (35). Senior catcher Kayla Cole (.314-326) will be another piece of the offensive puzzle that'll help guide the Lady Demons down the path to success. But that success will be administered by the strong corps of returning pitchers - juniors Kylie Roos (13-10, 3.26 ERA), Kelee Grimes (5-8, 3.36), and Brooke Boening (9-9, 3.55). “We're going to be strong on the mound,” said third-year head coach Donald Pickett. “And you have to be that in softball. We have all of ours back from last year, all three of which threw close to 100 innings last year, so Starting pitcher Kylie Roos returns. Great Tradition • Brighter Future

there's a lot of experience there.” Roos tossed 129 innings and struck out 117 while Boening threw 110.1 innings with 132 Ks and Grimes 81.1 innings with 92 batters fanned. “Those three players should be the strong point of our team,” said Pickett. “We've also got a lot of position players returning that we're looking build on. We've also got 4-5 freshmen that are going to be in and out of the starting lineup and hopefully they'll come along like I think they will.” After a 5-45 season in his first season at the helm, Pickett guided the Lady Demons to the best turnaround in the country last year after finishing 2727. The team started out 8-2 and finished the year by taking two out of three games against Texas-San Antonio. “I think that momentum of how we did last year will carry over into this sea-

son,” said Pickett. “The girls are a year older and they have a lot more confidence now. They know what it takes to beat teams in our conference. Everybody wants to keep it going and not have any letdowns. “We have a lot tougher test with our early schedule than what we did last year, but we're definitely capable of doing some really good things.” The non-conference schedule is loaded down with teams that will help prepare the Lady Demons for their 30game league slate. “We open up at the ULM tournament and will play some really good teams there (Louisiana-Monroe, Southeast Missouri State, Eastern Illinois, Indiana State). Then we'll go and play in a tournament at North Texas where they're one of the favorites to win the Sun Belt Conference. We'll also face a Nebraska team that's ranked in the top www.nsudemons.com
25. “After that, we'll play in a tournament at Chattanooga where we'll face some very good competition. “I also like our home schedule, especially with Big 12 member Baylor coming in here (Feb. 21). The plan is to take those early season, non-conference games and use those to help translate into wins when the conference season rolls around.” Pickett will be looking to Roberts and Cole to pave the way for a great season on the offensive front. “Sam led us in hitting last year and was our only all-conference selection,” said Pickett. “She improved a lot from her freshman to her sophomore year and we think she can improve that much this year. She had a great fall season, battled some injuries however, but we think she's back on track now and definitely going to be the anchor of the lineup.” “Kayla Cole is the only other .300 hitter we had on the team last year. Being a senior, she's going to be a big leader for us on the field.” “We've also got (newcomer) Tara McKenney who is going to be a great leadoff hitter and shortstop for us as a freshman. She had a great fall and we're really looking for a lot of special things out of her.” The Lady Demons, will play a 22game home slate beginning with a matchup against Jackson State on Feb. 16. NSU will then host Baylor on Feb. 21 and will follow that with a doubleheader against Prairie View on Feb. 23. NSU will open Southland Conference play at home on March 1 against McNeese State in a three-game series. 11

Donald
PICKETT
Head Coach 3rd Season at NSU (32-72) 3rd Season Overall (32-72) Tennessee-Chattanooga (‘05) ment appearances and two top-five finishes in the ASA nationals. Pickett learned about the Northwestern coaching post from Pat Murphy, the coach of College World Series participant Alabama, who was among several nationally-prominent coaches during the summer 2008 search for a new Lady Demons head coach.
Don't mistake Donald Pickett's country twang for a laidback personality. The Lady Demon softball coach is certainly easy to get to know, and he's never going to be described as fast-talking unless an umpire is involved. But he is driven. He has big ambitions. He has a plan in motion to quickly restore Northwestern State softball to prominence and championship-level success. He knows what it takes. He hired assistant coaches who have been there, too. Their approach took root last season and especially in recruiting, where their efforts resulted in the best turnaround in Divisoin I softball last season. The plan is in action. Facility improvements are tangible. A solid approach to coaching, teaching and managing the program is clear to see. To see where Pickett plans to take NSU, you need only see where he's already been as an assistant coach. Pickett helped Tennessee-Chattanooga to three NCAA Tournament appearances and the brink of a Women's College World Series berth while on the Mocs' staff. The 33-year-old Pickett begins his 14th season of collegiate coaching experience. He spent two years helping establish a brand-new program at Memphis after working in a pair of highly successful programs at UT-Chattanooga and Chattanooga State Community College. At Chattanooga State, Pickett was part of a staff that coached the team to three top-five finishes in the junior college softball world series along with three regional and conference championships. He also has coached the Austin (Tenn.) Eagles American Softball Association summer team to four national tournawww.nsudemons.com

Lady Demon Coaching Staff CC for three seasons, Pickett helped post a 151-27 record, including a 62-3 mark in 2001. A year earlier, Pickett was part of the National Fastpitch Coaching Staff of the Year, and in 2002, Pickett was among the Chattanooga State team that was inducted into the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame. A 2005 UTC graduate, Pickett is regarded as an excellent recruiter whose expertise coaching hitting and defense is recognized nationally. Coaching and administrative colleagues of Pickett's were effusive in their praise. “Donald is ready to be a head coach,” said Thees. “His softball knowledge is incredible and he does a great job of getting to know his players and recruits.” Said Lynn Parkes, the senior woman administrator at Memphis: “Donald Pickett is a man of character and integrity. He loves the game of softball and loves working with young people. I think he will do a fantastic job.” In Pickett's first season as assistant coach at his alma mater, the 2001 Lady Mocs opened the season with backto-back no-hitters and knocked off top-25 teams in Ohio State and Baylor, rolling to a 44-15 record while never dropping more than two games in a row. The Lady Mocs posted two upset wins over top-seeded and No. 12 ranked Florida Atlantic in the NCAA Regionals. UTC then just missed capturing a berth in the World Series after narrow losses to Georgia Tech and Florida State. “There may not be a better fundamental coach out there,” said UTC's Reed. “He is a good person, the type of person your family would like to be associated with, and he is perhaps one of the most 'up and coming' young coaches out there right now.” A strong reference came from an in-state rival of UTC's, head coach Torey Acheson at Tennessee Tech. “At Tennessee-Chattanooga, those players all became better under him......technically, his knowledge base is really good....he is an upstanding human being; he was raised right.” Said Laura Mincy, assistant athletic director and SWA at UTC: “Donald is very determined and passionate about college softball. He's a gem.” That's what he says - the gem part, anyway -- about his wife, Paige, and their 2-year-old baby girl, Ainsley Elizabeth, born Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 in Natchitoches.
“Starting with his high level of character and integrity, Donald Pickett has an amazing reputation in the collegiate softball world. He will serve as a good role model for our student-athletes while also providing them with the motivation and coaching needed to return Northwestern State to the point of challenging for Southland Conference titles and NCAA postseason berths,” said NSU director of athletics Greg Burke, announcing Pickett's hiring. Working for five seasons under coach Frank Reed at UTC, Pickett helped the Mocs advance within one win of the World Series. The Mocs had an overall 210-126 record while picking up three Southern Conference championships before Pickett joined coach Wendy Thees at Memphis following the first year of softball for the Tigers. Also serving as assistant to Reed at Chattanooga State Great Tradition • Brighter Future

Caitlin Noble
Team captain of the 2008 University of Washington softball team and one of the great pitchers in the storied history of the Huskies' program, Caitlin Noble is in her third season as the pitching coach for the Lady Demons. Noble finished her playing career with the fourth-most strikeouts in UW history (757) in 616.2 innings pitched. Noble ranked 35th on the all-time NCAA Division I strikeouts list with 9.1 strikeouts per seven innings. She fired two no-hitters, getting the first one as a freshman with a 4-0 win over Kansas on Feb. 26, 2005. Her second came in her junior season against another of the nation's top programs, as Noble threw a no-no against 8th-ranked Texas on March 18, 2007. That was not her most notable career win. That came in her freshman year, when she defeated No. 1-ranked Michigan on May 28, 2005 in the NCAA Super Regionals. That combined with a Pac 10 Conference regular-season triumph over eventual national champion UCLA and made her the only pitcher in the nation at season's end to have beaten both teams in the national championship game. Noble was the No. 2 pitcher on Washington's 2007 team that finished 3rd at the Women's College World Series, going 11-5 that season. She had at least 11 wins all four years, with a career-high 15 wins and 7 shutouts as a freshman. Noble was a three-time All-Academic Pac 10 selection, earning first-team honors as a senior and second-team recognition as a sophomore and junior. She made the EPSN The Magazine CoSIDA All-District Academic Team and appeared on the Academic All-America ballot in 2007 and 2008. Those seasons, she was also the winner of the Huskies' Most Inspirational Award. In 2008, she won the prestigious 101 Club Scholar-Athlete Award at UW. She had 19 career shutouts and an overall 51-31 record with a 2.32 ERA in 130 career appearances, 97 starts. She pitched 54 complete games. Opposing batters hit just .217 against Noble. As a freshman in 2005, she set the school record with 16 strikeouts in a six-inning win over Williamette. Noble became only the third freshman at UW ever to throw a no-hitter in the win over Kansas. A native of Sammamish, Wash., Noble played at Eastlake High School. At UW, she graduated with honors in history, posting a 3.46 grade point average. Born May 9, 1986, she is the daughter of John and Susan Noble, and has two sisters, Hayley Huson (28) and Lindsay Caranna (31), and a niece, Reese Caranna (4). Noble enjoys boating, traveling and in keeping with her academic major, seeing some of Louisiana's historical attractions.

What began as a small gathering of college administrators over 45 years ago, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 12 member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, that included current members Lamar University (then Lamar State College of Technology) and the University of Texas at Arlington (then Arlington State College), the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its fifth decade of existence. On July 1, 2006, the Southland Conference commemorated another milestone as the league membership reached 12, marking the largest configuration ever for the organization. The addition of the University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&MCorpus Christi expands the Southland into the Little Rock metro area and into the eighth largest city in Texas. UCA and A&MCorpus Christi has enhanced the Southland Conference in innumerable ways, including athletic and academic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage. In addition to its two newest members, the Southland Conference lineup also consists of Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Texas State University-San Marcos. The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men’s sports include football, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, volleyball, softball, soccer, golf, tennis, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The Conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, and men’s and women’s cross country.

University Administration Dr. Randall J. Webb Northwestern State President Dr. Randall J. Webb stated when he became Northwestern State University’s 17th president in July of 1996 that his primary objective would be to help make his Alma Mater the best institution it could be. It is apparent after more than 14 years that Webb is achieving that admirable goal. Under his leadership, Northwestern became the first public college or university in Louisiana to achieve 100 percent national accreditation of all eligible academic programs. Enrollment has reached record levels during Webb’s tenure as president and exceeded 10,500 for the first time in history in the fall of 2004. Webb has also been at the forefront in recent years of moving the university toward higher admission standards, which has resulted in some enrollment declines but in the enrollment of students with greater academic potential and aptitude. Retention has increased at the university, the average ACT score of students has gone up, and high school student leaders are enrolling in Northwestern in record numbers. There has been a substantial increase in the number of high school valedictorians and salutatorians among first-time freshmen at the university. External funding for NSU has also increased dramatically under Webb’s leadership. In the first capital campaign in its history, the university received $32.7 million to far exceed its goal of $18.84 million. That funding included the establishment of numerous endowed chairs and professorships to enhance academic programs at the university. In addition to the private funding, Northwestern has received more grant monies in recent years from state and federal agencies and private foundations than at any time since its founding in 1884. Webb has also expanded the university’s outreach by spearheading the development at NSU of the largest electronic education and distance learning network of any university in Louisiana. NSU offers courses and degree programs to students across the nation and world through Internet and compressed video. Millions of dollars have been obtained during Webb’s presidency for new and renovated facilities. A new $6.9 million Wellness, Recreation and Activity Center opened on the campus in 2005; and Morrison Hall, the Family and Consumer Sciences Building, and Williamson Hall have been completely renovated and restored. Over $32 million in construction by a private company has added two modified residence halls to the campus in recent years. Funding has also been obtained to rebuild the East and West Caspari Halls, and replace the underground electrical distribution system. Northwestern academic programs and athletic teams continue to receive positive national recognition. The Computer Information Systems program, for example, won five consecutive national championships in academic competition in systems analysis, and the NSU men’s basketball team defeated Iowa in the NCAA national championship tournament. Jerry Pierce Vice President/External Affairs Jerry Pierce is the Cal Ripken of the Northwestern State athletic program. Day after day, year after year, Pierce is in the lineup, fielding his position with aplomb, and delivering at the plate, knocking a ball out of the park from time to time but always taking an understated profile, seeing himself as a role player. Beginning his 46th year on the university's staff, Pierce's impact on NSU and the city of Natchitoches can't be measured as easily as Ripkin's Baseball Hall of Fame statistics, but they are equally indelible. He begins his 21st year as vice president of external affairs at Northwestern. A significant aspect of his job is oversight of intercollegiate athletics. Pierce works closely with athletic director Greg Burke and all NSU coaches and staff members to keep Northwestern athletics competing at a championship level week after week, month after month and year after year. He helped guide Northwestern into three athletic conferences (Trans America, 1979; Gulf Star, 1983; Southland, 1987) and NCAA Division I status in 1977. He is a past president of the Southland and has served the conference through other offices and committee positions. In 1994, he was named one of Louisiana's 20 most influential sports figures by the TimesPicayune. Athletic Administration
Greg Burke Director of Athletics
The Burke File AGE: 53 (Born Oct. 22, 1956) • HOMETOWN: Alliance, Ohio HIGH SCHOOL: Marlington ’74 • COLLEGE: Mt. Union ’78 (cum laude) POSTGRADUATE: Kent State ’86 • BEFORE HE WAS A.D.: Sports writer, Alliance (Ohio) Review, 1972-78; director of news and sports information, Hiram (Ohio) College (1978-85); administrative intern, NSU athletics, 1985-86; director, NSU Athletic Association, 1986-92; director of athletic development, University of Akron, 1992-96. BIG FAN OF: Cleveland Browns, Indians and Cavaliers INTERESTS: Working out, watching ESPN and VH1 Classic, family outings.
In the midst of his 15th year as director of athletics at Northwestern State, Greg Burke has received national acclaim for the job he's done in his adopted hometown. Athletics director at Northwestern since speaking at the annual NSU/Independence Bowl Kickoff Luncheon on August 29, 1996, Burke is the longest-serving AD at any Louisiana institution. He has steered NSU athletics to many of its greatest accomplishments while overseeing a program that has fielded championship caliber teams in nearly all of the school's NCAA Division I sports. In June, he was included among 29 winners of the Under Amour AD of the Year Award presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). He was also among four winners chosen to be involved in a Street and Smith's SportsBusiness Journal panel discussion on current Division I athletics issues. Joining NSU's Burke were Purdue's Morgan Burke (no relation), Samford's Bob Roller and Lee Fowler of North Carolina State, with the transcript of their discussion distributed to national media by the Sports Business Daily. Burke is the 2010-11 president of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association. Burke's 14 years as athletic director include 32 Southland Conference regular-season or tournament championships, 51 All-American and Academic All-American student athletes, and three U.S. Olympic competitors. Seventeen NSU teams have taken part in NCAA or WNIT postseason competition. Under his guidance, Northwestern State has led all 13 public institutions in Louisiana, and all 12 Southland Conference institutions, in the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate and Graduation Success Rate reports. The school's athletic facilities have undergone nearly $6 million in improvements in the past four years. NSU in 2004-05 became the first (and remains the only) Southland Conference member in the league's five decades of history to sweep football, men's basketball and baseball championships in the same athletic year. It's been done only once in Southeastern Conference history, by Alabama in 1933-34, and only four times in Big Ten Conference history, the last time by Michigan State in 1979-80. Those accomplishments have come with one of the more modest athletic budgets in the state and conference. Burke's management skill and fundraising ability have been pivotal. Burke generated a $2 million series of sponsorships for new scoreboards installed for 2008-09 at all NSU athletic venues and spearheaded the $700,000 Second Century Circle fencing project for athletic venues. Burke has displayed a remarkable ability to hire dynamic head coaches, including several whose success at Northwestern State has propelled them to national prominence in subsequent positions. Some of his best hires remain on staff at NSU. Two, basketball's Mike McConathy and soccer's Jimmy Mitchell, guided Northwestern in NCAA Tournament play in their second seasons and have been back to postseason since. NSU's 2006 basketball team scored one of the most memorable upsets in the history of March Madness, coming from 17 down to stun No. 15ranked Iowa 64-63. Burke has selected head coaches who have subsequently been hired by Alabama, Florida, Missouri, New Mexico, Kentucky, Virginia, Mississippi State and Wichita State. From his first day on the job, Burke has stressed the importance of having a balanced athletic program. To that end, tremendous competitive strides have been made in women's athletics under his guidance. The NSU soccer program was the first one in Louisiana ever to reach the NCAA Tournament. Volleyball set attendance records and made its best-ever showings in conference play in recent years. In softball, NSU posted the nation's most improved win total in 2010 regular-season play under second-year coach Donald Pickett. The Lady Demons joined Stanford as the only women's tennis programs in the country in 2010 with only one regular-season loss, while sweeping Southland regular-season and tournament titles and making a first-ever NCAA Team Tournament appearance. While on-field success by Demon and Lady Demon teams has been a source of pride for NSU supporters, Burke is equally proud of the tone which has been set within the NSU athletic program as it relates to academic achievement and community service. The academic accomplishments are reflected annually in the NCAA's APR and GSR studies. Community service by NSU student-athletes, coaches and staff more than doubled to over 5,000 hours in 2009-10. Recently, Burke spearheaded the adoption of the slogan “Great Tradition, Brighter Future” for NSU Athletics, and the creation of NSU Athletics “Cornerstones” for student-athletes: “Academic Achievement, Personal Responsibility, Competitive Success … Every Minute, Every Hour, Every Day!” In 2005, Burke was one of three recipients of the All-America Football Foundation's Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award and that same year, was also tabbed as one of two Natchitoches Parish Cenla Newsmakers of 2005 by the Alexandria Town Talk newspaper's editorial staff. He received the 2006 “Outstanding Alumni Award” from his alma mater, Marlington High School in Alliance, Ohio, recognizing his community service and professional achievements. Burke became one of only 21 alumni honored since the award was instituted in 1982. In June 2006, he was a featured speaker and panelist at the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors convention in New Orleans, addressing members of the College Athletic Business Managers of America and also participating in a panel discussion of "Fundraising from an Athletic Director's Perspective" speaking to the National Association of Athletic Development Directors. Since 2007, Burke has been a member of the prestigious NCAA Championships/Sports Management Cabinet, a 49-person panel which makes recommendations to the NCAA Board of Directors on key issues facing Division I athletics. He previously served a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee (1999-2002) and concurrently served a term on the eight-member NCAA FCS Committee that administers the national playoffs. Since his committee term expired, Burke has served as a site supervisor for Football Championship Subdivision playoff games across the nation and he is regarded as one of the country's premiere advocates of FCS football. He currently is third vice-president of the FCS Athletic Director's Association. In 2004, NSU received the highest possible rating, "fully certified," from the National Collegiate Athletic Association, affirming that Northwestern operates its athletic program in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I membership. Burke is a past president of the Natchitoches Kiwanis Club and remains active in that civic group. He has also been part of the steering committee for the Natchitoches Christmas Festival and is a former president of the Natchitoches Area Jaycees. He is involved with the American Heart Association and was 2010 March of Dimes chairman locally. He and his wife, Susu, a Natchitoches native, NSU graduate and elementary teacher, have a 16year-old daughter, Catherine, who is a junior at St. Mary's High School, a cheerleader, the point guard on the Lady Tigers basketball team, and a member of the tennis team.

Jody Biscoe Faculty Athletic Representative
Cary Bruno is the Academic Coordinator, whose primary duties include Study Hall and Tutor Coordinator, as well as assistant advisor for the Enhanced Academic Program. Bruno also assists Carrie Crowell with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Bruno, a former Demon Softball player and winner of the esteemed Southland Conference Steve McCarty Citizenship Award, graduated from NSU in May 2009 with a B.S. in Business Administration. She is currently earning her Master's Degree in Student Personnel Services with a concentration in Student Affairs.
Faculty Athletic Representative Jody Biscoe is Associate Professor of Psychology and Addiction Studies at Northwestern State, where he is the coordinator for the undergraduate Addiction Studies, and Substance Abuse/Prevention concentrations. Since 2006, he has served as Faculty Athletic Representative for NSU. This role includes the chair of the NSU Athletic Council. Since 2006, Northwestern State University has made numerous paradigm shifts in how it addresses the needs of student-athletes; however, one thing has been consistent in that its student-athletes are winners on the field and in the classroom. All have heard about higher educational institutions being penalized by the NCAA for academic improprieties. NSU has attempted to be a model program of “Doing Things the Right Way,” by following the Athletic Department motto: Great Tradition – Brighter Futures. This past year, NSU was one of only four schools in the State of Louisiana that did not receive any penalties for low NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) with baseball, soccer, softball, tennis, women’s indoor & outdoor track, and volleyball rating in the top three in the Southland Conference. Among the 40 Northwestern State student-athletes and athletic staff members who graduated in spring 2010, 10 of the 20 receiving undergraduate degrees graduated either cum laude or magna cum laude. Graduation rates of student-athletes in soccer, volleyball, men’s basketball, baseball and football ranked in the top four of the Conference. These accomplishments could not have been achieved without the support and efforts of the student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and administration. Also, Jody is the Director for the Louisiana Addiction Technology Transfer Center at NSU. He has served on the National Addiction Technology Transfer Center's (ATTC) Practice and National Leadership Institute Committee. In addition, he has coordinated five nationally recognized leadership institutes for Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico and a member of the National ATTC Leadership Directors Committee. Recently, he was appointed to the NAADAC - National Addiction Studies & Standards Collaborative Committee. This past year, Jody was selected to serve on the United States Health and Human Services – Substance Abuse & Mental Health Service Administration Expert Panel concerning workforce issues. Jody's wife, Veronica (Roni), is an avid runner. Their 16-year-old daughter, Roxy, is a junior on the varsity cheerleading squad and Lady Tiger basketball team at St. Mary's High School. All are devoted Demon fans!
Alex Cook Assistant Marketing Director Lafayette native Alex Cook is in his second year as assistant marketing director for NSU athletics, joining the staff in late August of 2009. Before joining NSU, Cook handled sponsorship sales, administrative duties and promotional activities for the 2009 Hall of Fame Induction Celebration featuring NFL greats Will Roaf and Marshall Faulk, golfer Hal Sutton, and women’s basketball coaching legend Sonja Hogg. He arrived in Natchitoches in April of 2009 after graduating the previoius month from Eastern Oregon University, earning a business administration degree with a concentration in marketing and a minor in economics. He was three-year letterman as a wide receiver on the EOU football team. Cook became the first student invited to serve on the university’s marketing committee and also provided assistance to the director of athletics. While in school, Cook also worked as a sales representative for NXGEN Payment Services, a national e-commerce firm affiliated with many athletics departments, governmental agencies and other entities. He also was an account consultant for Next Step Consulting in his hometown of Boise, Idaho, and was a marketing intern for the 2007 Cascade Collegiate Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by EOU in LaGrande. An Eagle Scout, Cook is a recipient of the Boy Scouts of America National Heroism Award for Lifesaving. He was a football, basketball and track letterman at Centennial High School in Boise. Born Nov. 15, 1984 in Lafayette, where his father was serving as head women’s basketball coach at Louisiana-Lafayette, Cook is the son of Ross and Sheila Cook of Boise. His mother served as the management consultant to NSU Athletics to establish the Scholarship Auction in 1989 before the family relocated to Boise. He has a sister, Megan, who is a recent graduate of Oregon State now employed in marine biological research and preservation activities based in Hawaii.
Dr. William Broussard Executive Director - NSU Athletic Association Associate AD for External Relations One of the most accomplished student-athletes ever at Northwestern State, two-time football All-America center William Broussard returned to his alma mater in February 2007 as the Director of External Relations, coordinating fundraising activities through the Athletic Association and Demon Victory Fund. Known for his avid and tireless promotion of NSU Athletics, Broussard has represented the department as Associate Athletic Director of External Relations since 2007 and planned or helped organize hundreds of events to promote Demon Athletics. After re-branding the annual fund campaign the Demon Victory Fund (DVF) in 2007, the DVF enjoyed its most successful year up to that point. The 2008-09 DVF once again broke the annual record for total revenues, number of Athletic Association members, and Select 100 Members on the way to establishing a new benchmark for annual, unrestricted support of the NSU Athletic Department. Under Broussard’s guidance, the NSU Athletic Association has set four consecutive annual total attainment records, secured the largest scholarship endowment and largest planned gift in the history of NSU Athletics. In the 2009-10 year, the NSU Athletic Association established or tied several annual records under Broussard’s guidance, including annual records for total operating revenues, gift-in-kind donations, number of commitments to the Endowed Scholarship Program (9), and number of Select 100 members (197). Broussard also assisted in raising more than $100,000 in support for renovations to the Athletic Field House. Broussard represents Northwestern State as the Southland Conference representative of the National Association of Athletic Directors of Development (NAADD) and is also an Assistant Professor of Journalism at NSU. He is the author of essays and articles on the culture of college athletics and writes a bi-weekly sports editorial for local news magazine The Real Views. He is also the 2010 president of the Natchitoches Lions Club. Broussard is a 2000 graduate, with distinction, of the Louisiana Scholars’ College at Northwestern State University and a 2007 graduate of the University of Arizona, with his Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition. A native of Crowley, he is married to the former Kendra Peters, a Lady Demon volleyball player during the couple’s days at Northwestern.

Alan Pasch joined the NSU athletic staff at the outset of 2008 although he’s been a prominent coach on campus since 2001. Pasch was head rowing coach for the club-level crew teams at NSU while he has also served as assistant intramural director. Pasch, a former Dean’s List student at Northwestern while obtaining his bachelor of arts degree in 2001, picked up his master’s degree in sport administration in 2006 from NSU. The NSU Crew Team was competitive on the national level throughout Pasch’s tenure as head coach. He was varsity team captain from 1997-2000 and was crew oarsman of the year in 1997, 1998 and 2000. Pasch also coordinated visits to Natchitoches by as many as 16 intercollegiate and club rowing teams each winter and spring, including nationally-ranked squads. He also served as director of the annual Natchitoches Marathon Rowing Championships which attracts up to 500 competitors each year. His wife Yonna works in the student life office at Northwestern State. Pasch is also an avid tennis player. The couple has a 1-year old son, Amsden.
Rocky Smith Assistant Director of Special Facilities for Events Operations Rocky Smith is in his first year as the assistant director for athletic facilities and game operations at NSU. His duties will include providing a safe, functional facility while serving as the game manager for NSU soccer, volleyball, and baseball events while assisting with the other athletic sports. A native of Bedford, Texas and a graduate of Trinity High School, Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in general studies at NSU and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in sport administration. At Trinity, he competed on the gymnastics team and took part in both state and national meets in the ring, pommel horse, and parallel bars. In 2002, he was part of the High School National Gymnastics. As an undergrad student, he was a member of the Spirit of Northwestern marching band as a bass trombonist. Born March 9, 1986, Rocky is the son of David and Robbie Smith and has a younger sister, Delayne.
