modece and self employment

MODECE & Self Employment I have been working in Modece under the two Principle Architects for a couple of weeks now. When talking to them in my original informal interview, I found that they would probably not have enough work to provide a salary to someone at the moment. As I really wanted to work for this practice I offered up the possibility of undertaking something similar to RIBA’s Host Practice scheme. They agreed to this, so now I have been given a desk in the office and have become self employed. This is a great outcome from my point of view because it gives me freedom to do as I please, I can come and go as I feel and manage my own time, take on which project I want to etc… If there is work that Modece want me to do, then I invoice them for my time. This so far has turned out to be better than a salary as I charge more than I would normally earn per hour. I have only had 2 days where there has been no work available from Modece. In these times I can continue my own personal projects, including MFC Cart Lodge, competitions and university work. Having this freedom brings up temptations of going off and doing other thing like visiting friends or having days off. I’m trying to manage my time well, working a relaxed 9-5 day with a working lunch and then enjoying my evenings and weekends away from it all. Achieving a strict division between these two times is difficult but will prove beneficial for my health in the long run. Going Self Employed was relatively easy (if you don’t loose all your files when you set it up). I found the government websites informative and simple to follow
