The Inclusive Club – Refunctionalization of Garage Sanremo

The project starts from the idea of looking for a current architectural outcome of the Gentlemen’s Club, developed in 18th century London. The area is that of the ex Garage Sanremo, which, due to its unique architectural layout, represents an interesting point of discontinuity in the portion of urban fabric in which it is located. The project doesn’t change the exceptional character of the pre-existence and rather makes it the starting point for a new functionalization: three “metal boxes”, each hosting a different function (cinema, gym, bar) are grafted into the rhythmic volume of the main garage; the secondary garage is itself made a “box” to enclose a covered garden, while what was once the entrance body to the garage becomes the base of a tower-hotel.

MASTER’S DEGREE THESIS prof. Jacopo Leveratto

The various functions overlook a central space, hosting the real heart of the club. This space, with its more fluid forms, is a place of relationship where you can work, read or relax, together or on you own. The traditional club, with its various rooms is now opened, the “rooms” are brought outward and the respective functions combine to form a complex system that is proposed from the outside to attract, and from the inside to satisfy various needs of contemporary living. The project thus leads to the creation of a multipurpose space that could be defined as Inclusive Club, as opposed to the purely exclusive character of the original club and in line with a very different society from that in which it has had greater success.

Panza Gallery extension of Villa Panza Museum in Varese

The project consists of the expansion of Villa Panza in Varese, an eighteenth-century origin villa known for its important collection of contemporary art. Since the client advanced the need for new spaces to be used for temporary exhibitions, the project will have the function of supporting and strengthening the museum. The design choice was to approach the existing boundary wall with a long regular thin volume making the remaining part of the extension hypogeum. In this way, the ground level gives way to a free paved square, treated as a monolithic block to be modeled, generating intrusions and extrusions. The square is actually “carved out” by two patios, from which the space below takes light, and surmounted by some elementary geometric volumes (such as the parallelepiped, the cone and the pyramidal prism) that give the square a metaphysical atmosphere. In the part behind the former stables of Villa Panza, the pyramidal prism represents the “poetic reaction space” that the client had requested: a small single-use balcony introduces the visitor into a suggestive space, leaving him suspended in the depth to contemplate the sound of the water.

INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO 1 G. Basso Peressut

In addition to the various exhibition spaces, the extension also houses a bookshop, a play area for children and a small conference room in the basement. An outdoor pavilion overlooking the garden performs the function of reading room.

Proust’s House designing the house of a collector

“No sooner had the warm liquid, and the madeleines crumbs with it, touched my palate, a shudder ran through my whole body, and I stopped, intent upon the extraordinary changes that were taking place. […] the whole of Combray and of its surroundings, taking their proper shapes and growing solid, sprang into being, town and gardens alike, all from my cup of tea.” (M.Proust, “In Search of Lost Time”)

EXHIBIT DESIGN STUDIO

In a lifetime we surround ourselves with objects that we unknowingly load with meaning; the object is often experienced only according to its usefulness. When we lose it and find it again, however, we often do not see it as the useful and empty object of the past but it acquires a new power: it can stimulate our subconscious, making us relive a feeling in a much more complete way than the reason can.

G. Basso Peressut, P. Salvadeo

Each object is what the biscuit dipped in tea represents for Proust, a simple and everyday gesture, imbued with an evocative power such as to override times and generations and bring back distant sensations. The collector is an ideal Proust, a subject akin to this sensitivity, fascinated by the evocative power of objects. The house is composed of many distinct volumes, grouped together according to the logic of clear separation of the two macro-functions of collecting (in the parallelepiped) and of living in (in the cubes). The house doesn’t take shape from the subdivision of a space in the various floors and rooms, but from the connection of the individual living areas. As regards the interiors, we developed the theme of the “box in the box”, starting from the island of bedroom services, passing through the house in the house located in the living area, up to the more complex system of shelving on two floors that defines the space of the atelier-library.

Fast Home - a home for the contemporary living

The place we call home is becoming something less and less definitive, almost a temporary support, in which living often becomes synonymous with adapting. This “game” is a way of proposing a new, more fluid living that manages to keep up with the world around us and with an increasingly fast lifestyle: contemporary living. This way of living the home must not compromise all those aspects that contribute to “feeling at home” and it is precisely in these parameters that the space must be home (and not house). The aim of the game is to be able to live by reconciling the concepts fast and home in a space that provides all the tools to do it.

INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO 2 P. Salvadeo

The strength of this domestic scene is the fact that each actor (the inhabitant) can easily adapt it to his character, this includes other elements, the objects, in balance between the role of actor and that of scenography. The game, in this housing game, will therefore stage a dense system of relationships in which objects will be a fundamental part. The house will tell stories through objects, the inhabitants will be nothing more than the involuntary narrators of these stories.

DOMINO - a tower for refugees

domino | (lat.) to be in power, to have dominion DOMINO aims at subverting the symbol of the tower, which has represented power and wealth for a few, but for most stands for submission and powerlessness. The building which so far has been inaccessible, now leans towards human needs made even more crucial by the tragic situation in the Middle East.

IDEAS FORWARD / 24H COMPETITIONS - “SYRIA”

DOMINO, with its base firmly anchored to the ground symbolizing hope for a new life and new possibilities for the refugees, rises into the sky ready to welcome asylum seekers who reach the Sicilian Coast. Striking against the sky with its 45 degree slope, the tower symbolizes the deposition of power as much as the redemption of an entire population, and offers its guests a warm and informal welcome.

honorable mention

Its rigid frame comes to life and constantly changes, thanks to the flexibility of its modular system which has its basic unit in the container. The project doesn’t simply aim at addressing a contingent emergency situation: like the first tile in a chain of dominos, this project wants to stimulate a shift in the attitude towards the refugee crises, and raise awareness among politicians of the plague of those less fortunate. From power, to people.

AXONOMETRY + PLAN SCHEMES

The whole system is composed of basic units (2,5x6m), transported to the different levels by a rack lift and moved to their position thanks to rails on the floor which enable the facility to host up to 400 people and provide first aid.

Each floor is provided with different living units - family unit and modular dorms unit - equipped with fitted folding furniture, a bath unit, a kitchen unit and flexible units suitable for different mutual needs.
