Matteo Quarta
matteq11 I am a young aspiring lighting designer and just graduated in Architecture for Sustanable Design at Polytechnic of Turin. I enrolled to Architecture in 2011 and closed my Bachelor Degree in 2014, so I started my Master Degree in Architecture for Sustainable Design closing it in the last summer. During my 6 years at Polytechnic of Turin I chose to study in deep the physic building in general. In 2015 I started my walk towards the lighting design. I began with a simple workshop inside Polytechnic and then I attended other workshops and activities in and out the university. In July ‘17, I closed my university career with a Final Project in lighting retrofit design: “Lighting retrofit in industrial buildings: performance and economic assessment for Bitron S.p.A.”. I analyzed the interconnections between natural and artificial light for users benefit and comfort and the energy and economic saving for customer. Today, I’m closing an internship at Artec3 Studio in Barcelona, my first experience in an international studio, where I could learn lighting design mechanisms, the project phases and the lighting branding. Now, I’m looking for a new employment in a architecture and lighting design studio, to continue my training process. I like travelling, to discover new places and new cultures, to take photographes of landscape and especially nightscape. I played basket in several teams, like Virtus Bologna and Angelico Biella (Serie A) during the season ‘08/ ‘09 - ‘09/ ‘10 .

“LIGHTING DESIGN” WORKSHOP Matteo Ficai + Matteo Quarta + Caterina Sguassero Masino (To), Mar ‘15 - Jul ‘15
My first lighting experience was in 2015: the “Lighting Design” workshop of Polytechnic of Turin, by Prof. Chiara Aghemo. It was strictly linked with a restoration project of the Castello di Masino, just north of Turin. The origins of this building date back to the 11th century. It was the Real House of the first King of Italy, Arduino d’Ivrea, and now it is a FAI propriety: it is a national, not profit association. We designed the new illumination for many spaces: the internal stairs of a tower, the underground brick walls path, and the “Oleanders terrace”, one of the most important front of the Castle which is visible from the highway. During a clear-sky day, you can observe the city of Turin from this terrace. We wanted to light up the Castle to let it a new image and a new importance, like a symbol of the valley of Canavese, full of this kind of ancient building and rich of secular history.
“LIGHT UP THE GATE” CONTEST Matteo Ficai + Matteo Quarta + Caterina Sguassero Masino (To), Jun ‘15
In this contest we had to light up the portals of the castle. There were 5 gates to light up, each one for every main acccess to the Castle. We chose the gate of the main entrance to the Castle, contemplating also the parking railing, marked out by a sequence of columns until the gate. The vertical system of the perimeter was the key of this proposal. Infact, every column of the main gate was lit by an uplight proyector recessed and hidden by the grass, as the railing’s columns. Then, we have also lit the way to the entrance Castle thinknig a special luminaire recessed in the road like little stars in the pebbles, protecting it by the the cars and the pedestrians. We chose a low-key project respecting the hierarchy of the castle. With a easy level of illuminance on the column we focused on the single element without disturbing the view of the main building.
“POLITO IN LIGHT” CONTEST & WORKSHOP Francesca Cabodi + Matteo Quarta Turin, Sep ‘15 - Jan ‘16
In collaboration with Luci d’Artista of the City of Turin, Polytechnic of Turin and prof. C. Aghemo proposed a contest for the creation of a light art installation for the Court of honour of Valentino Castle. This proposal was split in two steps: before there was the contest, won by “Luci in cattedra”. The second phase was the realization workshop of the winning project, which involved all the partecipants. The final installation was composed of a central “tree” of white stretchy bands, lit up with UV lamps, so that the white bands became blu or violet. Twelve cubes surrounded the big “tree”, like students with a teacher. The cubes were composed by a wooden frame and opaline panels. Within the cubes there were RGB strip led with a remote control, and all of them changed the colour with timing, all together.
FINAL DESIGN STUDIO “RED RING OFFICE” Filippo La Placa + Sara Pattono + Matteo Quarta Turin, Feb ‘16 - Jul ‘16
The last Design Studio of my university career was about a “mending of two areas in the north of Turin, Lucento and Vallette: the first one is regular and squared, while the second one is characterized by a curvilinear pattern. For this reason, our project had a curve shape, integrating with the buffer zone of Corso Regina Margherita. The project was characterized by four building joints by the elements of connection on different levels. The interior functions were commercial at the ground floor and offices at the other levels. At a later stage, I picked this project back up and I proposed an outdoor illumination system for the ground floor, the porch and the surrounding park. For the porch I thought about a recessed downlight system and for the plate and the park I chose a pole system, with different type of pole for each zone.
“INTERIOR & LIGHTIN DESIGN FOR RETAIL” WORKSHOP Matteo Quarta Turin, Sep ‘16 - Oct ‘16
The “Interior and Lighting design for retail” workshop was proposed by prof. M. Vaudetti and prof. C. Aghemo at Polytechnic of Turin. In the first part of workshop we studied the window shop setting of the most important shops of the city. The second part was about the application of research on the case study: “Mondo fashion” in Turin. We had to restyle and relight two shop windows, the first one in front of a pedestrian street, the other one in front of a square. I thought two types of lighting system depending on the kind of goods and clothes exposed, and the position of the showcases, too. The first window, with clothes more precious and elegant, was lit by only white spot light. The second one, with more casual goods, during the day was like the first window, but by night, it became blue, lit by RGB system to be recognizable by the passer-by in the square in front of the shop and along the gallery.
“SOCIAL LIGHTSCAPE” WORKSHOP SERIES Carolina Campi + Alessandro Maestrini Margherita Pane + Matteo Quarta Rome, Apr ‘17
The “Social Lightscape Series workshop was hosted by Morandi Centre: a public housing in Tor Sapienza, the east suburbe of Rome. It was organized by the LSE of London in collaboration with the University Roma3 and iGuzzini. It was managed by A. Goni and M. Frascarolo from Rome and D. Slater and E. Bordonaro from London. The main group of students was divided in smaller groups to analyse more areas of the centre. The first step was a social research on site, analyse the datas and transforming the findings in a creative lighting design solutions. iGuzzini let us to test our design ideas with a real lighting mock-ups on two nights. In particular, we transformed just for a night the football court of the center in a light art installation: we lit up the fencing net after we painted it white. The workshop ended in a public presentation where the students exposed their research projects and new lighting design proposals for Tor Sapienza.
FINAL PROJECT “LIGHTING RETROFIT DESING IN INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS” Matteo Quarta Grugliasco (To), Nov ‘16 - Jul ‘17
My final project aim was to explain the meaning of sustainable design in architecture through the lighting design. I analysed three different locations within an industrial building: the canteen, the office and the production premises. First, I observed the artificial and natural lighting sources. Then, I mapped and calculated the whole system with instruments, like luxmeter, and digital models, to understand the present situation. I also evaluated the powers and the consumptions within each space. The conclusions of data analyse was a critical situation of natural lighting, caused by an insufficient windows area. The level of illuminance in every space was lower than standard, because they were lit by a weak and low efficiency source system. The design criteria was improving the current light situation by the diversification for visual task and reduction of energy consumption through a high efficiency lamps. I focused on visual comfort not only on work station, but also in informal spaces like canteen, improving the architectural space quality with an interior and lighting design project.
