MASTER THESIS

Proposal for the recovery of “Fausto Coppi” Motovelodrome in Turin MASTER THESIS

PROPOSAL FOR THE RECOVERY OF “FAUSTO COPPI” MOTOVELODROME IN TURIN With: F. Pozzaglio Tutor : Prof. G. Ambrosini, Prof. M. Rebaudengo Politecnico di Torino

06

The publication of an Explorative Notice (April 2018) by Turin Municipality re-opened the debate about the requalify of one of the historical sports facility in the city: the Motovelodrome is part of the architectural assets of Turin and of the cycling Italian culture. The Thesis introduces the re-design of the area (from an urban scale to an architectural one), together with an estimative study (of an economic nature) that has as its goal the certification of the profitability of the design. -

The first part of the Thesis is divided into five chapters. The first one analyzes the permanent relationship between the urban space and the sport; the second chapter proves how important have been the velodromes (and their genesis) in the developement of the sport history. The third chapter is focused on the case study of the Vigorelli Velodrome in Milan; the fourth and the fifth chapters introduce the area of “Fausto Coppi” Motovelodrome and its re-design. It is structured in two parts: the recovery of the existent buildings; an “addiction” design component in order to solve the main critical issues of the area through the insertion of a new sport

building. The last part analises the cost of construction and the cost of realization of the design thanks to a parametric compute. Then the cash-flow has been calculated: the incomes have been estimated after the definition of a possible schedule of the whole complex, whose main goal is to profile the average users in a typical year and to calculate the possible incomes deriving from the practice of sport in the new centre. In order to achieve the economic sustainability of the whole intervention, three design alternatives have been evalueted.

Wooden Elevation: the City “Above” FINAL UNIT DESIGN

WOODEN SUPERELEVATIONS: THE CITY “ABOVE” With: F. Pozzaglio, F. Pautasso Tutor : Prof. G. Ambrosini, Prof. G. Callegari, Prof. A. Capozzoli Politecnico di Torino

10

“Above City” is the paradigma of the new city, that changes the face of the existent condition (“Below City”): pushing oneself upwards means taking advantages from that occasions that naturally emerge from the urban consolidated pattern. This way of approaching the design constitutes a new language for a new architecture. -

The aim of this project is to “move” the attention of the designers above the existent buildings. The city that will born on the solid bases of the existent one intentionally distances itself from what stays “below” and adopts a new, contemporary morphology. However, it still hosts similar functions: traditional houses, work spaces, cohousing experiments. This design unit, that was the last one of my academic career, included the contributions of architectural composition, technology of architecture (by developing tridimensional models and schemes of the adopted solutions - all based on the X-Lam systems -), and of techniques for the environmental control (by

dimensioning a complete climate-control system - all the calculations have been done with an Excel spreadsheet - ), in order to provide thermo-hygrometric comfort to future inhabitants.

URBAN DESIGN UNIT 1

Lyon’s Confluence: masterplan URBAN DESIGN UNIT 1

LYON’S “CONFLUENCE”: MASTERPLAN With: M. Ruzza, F. Rossetto Tutor : Prof. A. Mela, Prof. M. Artuso, Prof. G. Guiati Politecnico di Torino

14

The case study immediately seemed to be one of the most interessant debate in Europe in the field of urban renewal: the Confluence Area has always had some peculiarities that made the case study unique and that still nowadays constitutes a stimulating on-going process of extraordinary urban and social policies. -

The past history of Confluence in Lyon, its story and but also its recent development constitute just some of the causes that underpin the dramatic situation in which the area was until the third millennium: an empty portion of the city, with just few residential neighborhoods in the North, characterised by a deep fragmentation and a strict separation towards the core of the city and its historic center (2nd Arrondissement). Taking into account the presence of railways just in the middle of the Confluence and its natural conformation, it’s clear that a design in this area should represent an interesting and stimulating challenge. The design for the Confluence Area

takes direct inspiration from three main focal points: the increase of permeability, the implementation of mixed use neighborhoods, the “urban sewing”. Than, the attention has been moved to the social sustainability of the design process: it has been essential to underline how the partecipation tools could be used and how they could be adapted to the case study. The public design forums could be advertised thanks to a range of instruments (a manifesto, a survey); a list of forniture has been designed in order to enhance public relationships in new neighborhoods.

“TRAVERSEES” IN TURIN: SUSPENDED AREAS With: R. Guida, A. Pastore, G. Surace Tutor : Prof. R. Ingaramo, Prof. C. Bianchetti Politecnico di Torino

15

The morphological texture of the Traversée (from french, “crossing”, that is a particular way of re-thinking about urban spaces in the city of Turin and that constitutes the main topic of this design unit) presents some peculiarities that make it unique in the regulax urban pattern of the city. Therefore any intervention on this specific urban portion is not immediate, even because of the presence of some of the historical monuments and symbols of Turin (e.g. Mole Antonelliana). -

The urban texture of the historic center offers different occasions of intervention: after a first analysis phase, the design focused on two specific neighborhoods, in order to create new spaces for students in Turin. In the first design proposal, the intervention had as its main goal the recovery of the interior yard, that is actually not accessible from the outside. The design focus regards the creation of new paths and the re-use of an abandoned building in the middle of the yard, in full respect of the current functioning of the spaces within historic court. In the second case, as shown in the page beside, the design inter-

vention is a more invasive one: the proposal regards a superelevation of an uninhabited building that now divides two courts. This constitutes the occasion to requalify the two yards and to open them to the public fruition, in order to realize a brand new residence for students with its services. The “scenario” in which the design is located is actually Via Verdi, that hosts nowadays some of the main universitary facilities of the city.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN UNIT

EX “WESTINGHOUSE”, TURIN: MASTERPLAN With: M. Ruzza, F. Rossetto Tutor : Prof. A. Baietto, Prof. R. Pollo, Prof. V. Serra, Prof. A. Gorrino Politecnico di Torino

16

This area in Turin lies along “Spina 3”, one of the main urban transformation axes of the city: they were set by new Vittorio Gregotti’s Urban Development Plan (1989). This area is surrounded by heterogeneous neighborhoods: a park and a sport centre with the main bus stop of Turin (North); the Politecnico’s Architecture Campus and the ancient industrial complex called OGR (Est); a student campus and a historical industrial building called “Westinghouse” (South); some residential and commercial buildings (West). The urban void currently hosts a parking lot. -

The design takes into account the main critical issues of the area: the masterplan sets three different layers of the planning. At -15m (mobility layer), a new bus station has been designed. At ground floor (service layer), a new sport building and the commercial activities have been placed. At +5m, urban green areas have been moved. After the definition of the masterplan (that is the result of the work of a group composed by nine students), the attention moved to the design of the urban void: new buildings host some commercial activities and coworking areas at ground floor, traditional residences and cohousing areas at upper floors.

The contribution of building physics module has been crucial for the design: at aurban scale, some acoustic surveys have been carried out; by using a specific software, the urban heat island has been evaluated (before and after the definition of the masterplan). At the architectural scale, the energy demand of the traditional residential building has been defined: in strict adherence of the energetical italian laws, the stratigraphy of all components have been simulated, in order to guarantee the best comfort for the users. A significant amount of the energy demand has been satisfied thanks to renewable sources of energy.

RESTORATION DESIGN UNIT

SAINT GIULIANO CHAPEL, SAVIGLIANO (CN): RESTORATION With: M. Ruzza, F. Rossetto Tutor : Prof. C. Tocci, Prof. R. Chiabrando, Prof. P. Piumatti Politecnico di Torino

The city of Savigliano is favored by its geographic position, as it was born within two rivers, the Maira and the Mellea. In the direction of Saluzzo, you will come at the right on a tree-lined street leading to Strada Mellate and then to the Church of Saint Giuliano. It’s a small church located at the walls of the Villa Viancina, whose origins are very ancient (quoted as a document of 1028) and preserves in the interior frescoes of the ‘400s and’ 500s. -

After a deep on-site survey and the elaboration of the point clouds by using specific softwares, a proposal for the recovery of the church has been carried out. The decay analysis constituted a crucial phase in order to underline the main critical issues of the building that nowadays affects the small church. The intervention of restoration of the roof has as main target the consolidation of all connections between the trusses and the wall and between the different elements of the roof. Then, from the structural point of view of the entire building, some interventions of consolidations must be carried out, such as to connect the different spans of

the main nave between them by inserting struts (metallic cables); to link the internal walls of the roof between them with both metallic collars that embrace the walls and wooden elements, in order to resist to compression and tension strenghts; to prevent the overturning of the north facace by using a double metallic chain that is linked to the internal walls and connecting them with the external wall. A part of the work for the Design Unit regards an historic research on the triangular belltowers. They spread in particular in some areas, such as the Nice Comtee (France), the so-called Finalese in Liguria and several zones of Piedmont (Italy).
